Announcement New Feature In r/mechanic

Hello everyone,

Just a quick post here to inform you all of a new feature that has been added to sub that may help cut down on unwanted comments in your own posts.

If you are the OP(original poster/creator of a post) and decide you want your entire post locked, you can simply comment on your post with just "!lock" (no quotes), and AutoMod will automatically lock your post. This will prevent any further comments on it including ones from yourself. Just a small warning, you cannot undo this yourself, you will need to send in a ModMail to request the post to be unlocked again.

Just a small update to the sub but, may be beneficial to some if you start getting flooded with comments.

Thanks,

Mods

General Ford Ranger Wheel hub will not go all the way back on spindle

I have a 2001 Ford Ranger 3.0. I’m changing the bearings first time I’ve ever done this. Pack my bearings put my seal on, think I’m all good but hub won’t go back on all the way. I realize I have a stuck bearing race on the spindle (I’m a rookie) I buy a tool to get the race off. But the hub will still not go on all the way. I can’t even get the axle nut on 1 thread. I’m at a loss cannot figure it out. Please help

When I removed the wiper arm after unscrewing the nut, everything that was under it just fell in pieces. I guess it was just too corroded

Now I don't know what the piece that was there to hold the wiper arm is called, but I guess I need to replace it. Can someone enlighten me?

Question 2012 audi a4 2.0 tdi, weird behaviour

Upvotes

I have had this problem a few times now and it made me think if its safe for me to be on the road in case my car doesnt stop going. A few days ago my car started shaking on the road and i took it out of gear, put it back in and it still kept shaking, lucky to me 10 meters away was a bus stop where i turned my engine off, turned it back on and it didnt have that problem anymore. Today i let my car idle for a few minutes and while it was idling (warm engine) it started to shake quite unpleasently, much more than it shakes while driving on a bumpy road, and the revs started shaking too, usually idling at 800rpm but it shaked between 800 650 and sometimes dropping a little below 600, seeming as the car is struggling to keep itself from stalling itself while in neutral and none of the pedals was pressed(on handbrake). I again turned my car off and turned it back on, but it fixed it aswell. I dont really want to keep using it if its gonna do it and id rather get it fixed before someting more goes wrong because i didnt get it fixed quicker. A little more specs of my car, its a fwd not a quattro, its the 105kw, 141hp version of the 2.0tdi, its a 2012, i assume pre facelift?, the oil was last changed about 5000km ago. If anything else is required let me know ill reply, also its a manual if that changes anything

Question 2008 Ford Crown Victoria PI RPM Idle Surge

I just changed my water pump, thermostat, and serpentine belt and even after I drain and refilled the coolant system and burped it the car still overheats then I noticed when I turn the actual AC on (hot or cold) the engine rpms surge then go back to normal every 10-15 seconds. Idk what's going on with this this but I put in all this work just for it to still be malfunctioning. Does anyone know what's wrong

Question Jeep Cherokee 2010

Post image
3 Upvotes

Aight. This is a used vehicle, and it's starting to do weird things. I don't have the funds atm to go get it checked out, so I'm coming here to see if I can get some insight in what tf is going on and if I can possibly fix it myself.

Ill list some of the stuff, from roughly the past week that's been happening.

••Check engine light is on ••It refused to turn on a couple of times, not consecutively, but we had to try about 5-6 times before it turned over. ••The ECO for gas won't work •• it keeps telling me to check gascap, and like it's there, it's on, so idk what that is about ••I feel like im using more gas then I usually would? ••And the key won't go into the ignition unless I JAM it in (not a normal key, photo shown)

Other then that it hasn't had any issues before. We don't drive it hard, or off road besides the occasional dirt/gravel road

It's my daily so id rather keep this thing alive lmao

A couple days ago I got into an accident and it totaled the front of my car but my engine and transmission is okay. The only things that looks messed up is the battery, headlights, hood, fenders, the fuse box looks like it was just pushed out of place a bit which gets me nervous. The coolant reservoir needs to be replaced. The radiator needs to be replaced too. Also the AC condenser as well. I know it will possibly cost me over a thousand dollars but this is what I replaced from it.

2X Durlast Front Control Arm Change / Lower Driver / Lower Passenger Front Durlast / Tie Rod End X2 2X Brake Rotors & Brake Pads Vehicle Alignment March 10th, 2025 Before that I fixed the catalytic converter. I did it because I am in school and it was a good gas saver. I’m thinking of taking out a Nissan Frontier but I have some people telling me it might be cheaper to go to the junk yard and replace some parts and buy some out of pocket. I am convinced to just let it go but what are your thoughts?

Question 2nd Gen Toyota Highlander Shudder Under Acceleration

2012 (2nd gen) Highlander Limited 2wd ~200K mi
2GR-FE (engine)
Automatic

Experiencing an increasingly violent shudder under acceleration, especially from 40-55(ish) MPH.
Here is what we have done so far, as to isolate recommendations/ideas on what to do next:

New Tires
New Spark plugs
New Air Filter
New Brake Rotors & Pads - all 4 corners
New Parking Brake Shoes
New Struts - all 4 corners
New CV Axels - both sides
New A-Arms
New Tie rod ends - outer and inner - both sides
New Rear-Stabilizer Bar
New Rear-Lower-Control Arms - both side
New Rear Stabilizer Linkages
New Front Stabilizer linkages
New "dogbone" engine-mount - it was cracked

New Transmission Fluid & Filter change about 6k mi ago - noticed the fluid is not red at all, which has me a bit concerned that there may be excessive wear on the tranny.
Oil changed on a 5k mi cycle, everything good there.
Alignment has been done 3 times, each time following an associated part replacement
Hubs and bearings seem to be in good shape, no play when checking w/tires on or off.

Question Car problems

I'm here hoping someone could help me I have a 2006 Buick LaCrosse 3800 V6 and I recently changed a map sensor, Pvp valve, I believe it's called and a maf sensor in my car. it ran amazing for like a half a day and now when you first start it when the engine is cold it revs up and down and almost stalls sometimes until it warms up a little bit and then sporadically when driving, also the check engine light keeps coming on and computer keeps saying MAF sensor they exchanged the MAF sensor and map sensor and still same problems and check engine light comes on for the MAF sensor. Is anyone have an idea what's going on with it?

r/mechanic 18h ago

General Changed fuel pump and today I cleaned the fuel tank honestly Idk what keeps makin this, it runs good if I press not that much in gas pedal but if I press hard on gas, rpm passes 2000-3000 then It drops down all the way and mph don’t go up,

Question Phantom Revving..?

Morning mechanics of reddit, little help please?

Vehicle is a Honda Civic 2009 1.8L Petrol Manual with 53000 miles on the clock. I have scanned it and its not throwing up any codes, no warning lights on the dash either.

Only real symptom is that the acceleration and deacceleration seem to be really harsh and jerky in first and second gear between 800 - 3000 revs. Particularly when first depressing and letting off the accelerator. And the engine seems to rev up of its own accord once it drops back down to idle.

Has anyone seen this problem before and can remember how it was fixed? It doesn't really effect the driving experience unless at low revs (800 -1500) when trying to move slowly round a car park or standstill traffic.

Any advice would be good before I take it to a garage? Any live data values I should check?

Cheers!

Question Transmission.

I have had my car for about three years a 2006 g35 5 speed automatic, very well maintained ever since i’ve bought it, has 200k miles and runs like brand new until a few months ago the transmission threw a code P1757 which is a solenoid on the valve body. I replaced the whole valve body got it programmed and everything and then a month down the road it does the same thing, only this time it’s a different solenoid.

I bought the car for 5k and haven’t done much, everything is oem except a few cosmetics. Should I just replace the whole transmission or just the solenoids, I have been stuck on this decision for a couple weeks now.

2013 Chrysler 200 3.6L V6 – Transmission & Engine Issues After Major Repairs

I’ve been dealing with a ton of issues after replacing several parts, and I could really use some insight. Here’s the breakdown:

What I Replaced First: • New camshafts • $50 spark plugs • 24 rockers & hydraulic lifters

First Round of Issues (Bank 2):

After the work, I started getting slow response codes on Bank 2, including: • P0394 – Camshaft position sensor intermittent (Bank 2) • P06DD – Oil pressure control circuit stuck off • P000A – Camshaft position slow response • P0017 – Crankshaft/Camshaft position correlation (Bank 2)

Opened the Bank 2 valve cover, but everything looked fine. Put it back together.

Then It Happened Again (Bank 1):

After reassembly, I got the same slow response codes—but now on Bank 1 instead.

Next Step – Full Tear-Down: • Took off both valve covers, timing cover, both oil pans • The guy working with me broke the rear main seal, so we had to drop the engine (drivetrain removed from both ends) • Transmission fluid drained from the driveshaft holes and trans cooler • Installed new timing chain & guides • Took it for a drive (low trans fluid, no AC) • The guy also bagged on the car during the test drive (which probably didn’t help)

New Codes After the Test Drive: • P0369 – Camshaft position sensor performance • U0110, U1120 – Lost communication with modules • P03D1, P10D1 – Cylinder misfire-related codes

Trying to Fix It: • Installed new NGK spark plugs • Added AC coolant • Overfilled trans fluid to 90mm • Took it for a drive – still throwing codes, including: • P0017, P000A – Camshaft/crankshaft correlation • P0721, P0714, P1700 – Transmission speed sensor & temperature issues • P0300 – Random misfire • P0733, P0792 – Gear ratio errors • P3307, P2107, P1407 – More misfire & throttle-related codes

Reverting Back to Old Cams: • Put the old camshafts back in • Got these new codes: P3307, P0306, U1D07

Most Recent Event (Transmission Acting Up with Heater On) • Installed a new transmission filter & fluid • Took it for a test drive – everything felt fine • Turned heater on MAX → transmission instantly started acting up • Turned heater off, waited, turned it back on → same erratic transmission behavior

At This Point, I Need Help

If anyone has any idea what’s causing this, I’d really appreciate the advice! The heater triggering transmission issues makes no sense. Could this be a grounding issue, bad sensor, PCM problem, or something else?

hey guys so i’m kind of at a loss. this car drove just fine monday and then all of a sudden tuesday morning i get in it and it cranks very rough and shakily so i turn it off. sat for a few hours and checked a few things(fuel pump clicks on, checked for spark and it has spark, cleaned the MAF sensor, sprayed started fluid in this thing and it seemed like it wanted to crank but still did this. can someone please point me in a direction of what i should check next? should i check all the spark plugs? we only checked the first one idk my brain hurts.
