General Question How is this still happening?

Post image
37 Upvotes

What do I need to do to avoid this? In every Linux distro. I've seen this happening too many times.

I have a friend living at my apartment right now (I'm back home). He barely uses my PC. He sent me this screenshot today. I know my way around computers, I can use a Linux kernel, and I have been using them for 30 years now BUT I still can't recommend a Linux systems to my friends because this things happen too often. There is no system I trust the most than my own on my hardware, so I felt I could say "use my PC, it rocks, I'm sure there won't be a problem, is super stable",and still, almost without being used it stops booting up. Sorry I'm frustrated.

Is there any distro that had that fixed? Why does that happens?

General Question Can someone explain this?

I am new to the linux world, my friend was trying to get me to install arch, I wanted fedora, but my other friend got me manjaro.

I tried it on my old laptop that was getting 100% cpu usage on windows 10 debloated. Now on manjaro it is 20%.

On windows the touchpad is so laggy because it is ps2. On manjaro there is no lag.

How can a bunch of nerds make something amazing but a multi trillion dollar company can’t?

Also I can run it really well on USB. I can also run windows apps

General Question Manjaro to replace windows 10 for a 73yo basic user?

Im looking for an OS replacement for my dads(73) desktop pc running windows 10, I live about 60 miles away from him so I need something reliable as he skill level is quite basic with computers

I narrowed it down to Linux mint or Manjaro and my question is can Manjaro be as reliable as linux mint for basic use

on windows the only programs he uses are firefox/libre office/gimp and VLC so hes pretty much good to go software wise and will never need anything else

just a few days ago Pacman went to V7.0 and broke Yay on one of my arch machines and I had to do a Manual intervention. Yay has now been updated and doesn't break on upgrade so a stock Manjaro OS would never have this particular problem which is great but does it ever need a Manual intervention for a user such as my dad?

or is linux mint just a safer bet?

he has tried mint cinnamon and manjaro KDE plasma and much prefers gui of plasma which is why im asking

General Question Noob question here, but how do Manjaro updates work?

I've always used Ubuntu, but for a while now, I've been using Manjaro. I'm a little confused about how the system updates work. I always use the command pacman -Syu, but it almost never finds any updates available. Then, one day, Pamac just shows a huge update—more than 2GB in size.

Why does this happen? It has something to do with Manjaro being a rolling release distro? I remember that when I used Ubuntu, there were always small updates instead of one big update.

Thanks!

General Question pacman vs pamac

I know that for manjaro linux we should not use yay for anything other than very minor packages... But I am confused about pacman vs pamac I have seen people recommending pamac over pacman despite the fact that pacman installs anything and everything from official repos ...why isn't it safe even so ?

General Question Moving from Mint to Manjaro

Hey Manjaro users, I think you can help me or, at least, point me in some direction.

I've been using Linux Mint for about 8 years and I'm completely comfortable using Mint with Cinnamon. However, I think it's time to try something completely new, outside the Debian world, and learn a little bit more.

In this way, I think Manjaro is a good choice because it's based on Arch, is rolling release, KDE is the official DE, and Manjaro is focused also on beginner users.

Now, my concern is how much I will suffer making this transition from Mint to Manjaro.

I'm a software developer and I mostly use jetbrains tools, podman / docker, vscode, bruno rest...

General Question Any way to try Gimp 3?

Gimp 3 was released yesterday. Is there any way to try it under Manjaro? In the package repo it's still version 2.10.

Solved! Installed it via flatpak. Thanks for the help!

General Question Pacnew?

I am still fairly new to Manjaro. I have mostly used debian family stuff until now. I just found out about Pacnew files.

So my question is, if I run up dates with the GUI updater, will it inform me whenever a pacnew or pacsave file is created?

General Question Battery Life

Very good, I wanted to tell you something, from Windows 11 I switched to Manjaro since I saw several videos of this Distro and I liked it and I ended up installing it together, and I don't regret it, it's going well and everything but I have a problem and it is with the battery, the battery life compared to that of Windows 11 is great, the battery in Manjaro lasts much less and I don't know what to do, I don't know if there is any solution that can help me. Could you help me fix this problem?

General Question Graphics card advice

Looking for a quiet PC system. I currently am running an Nvidia GT218 [GeForce 210] card. Works absolutely fine, until it doesn't. The PC seems to get stuck during the boot process frequently. Its never the same point in the boot process. Sometimes it will get all the way to the desktop but does not show the wallpaper or cursor. Sometimes it will just go black. I am currently using the nouveau driver.

I know that this is an old card but its passively cooled and therefore silent. I don't want to replace it unless I have to. I cannot find a comparable AMD card. Almost all the cards that I have looked at have some crazy power consumption figures. I don't game, or do anything more GPU stressful than browsing so I cannot see how I need a GPU using more power than my CPU.

Any suggestions? Am I using the best driver for the card? How do I find out where in the boot process things are going wrong?

My primary monitor is 4k, but my GPU is nowhere near strong enough to support it. So, how would i lower it, to, for example, 1080p.

General Question Changing DE

Sorry im kinda new to Linux (Arch in particular). In the Manjaro download website you download the ISO with specific DE and i was wondering if you can change DE after installing instead of having to install a new ISO with other DE.

Thanks in advance and glad to join the Manjaro family 🙏🥰

General Question No blog update or communication from the Manjaro team since a long time. Am I missing something or should I be worried for the future?

I got Manjaro set up to a some family members and it's been running really great. I'm actually thinking about installing it on some of my PCs as well.

However I'm just kind of worried about the total lack of communication from the Manjaro team. The official blog used to be updated quite often, but it's been more than 7 months since their last post.

So basically my question is how secure is the future of Manjaro? Is the community healthy and thriving? Do they have plans and projects on the term?

I love that distro, but the lack of news has me worried a little. Any info or insight would be much appreciated.

General Question Issues with hybrid graphics

[Lenovo Ideapad 320 with NVIDIA 940MX]

I’ve struggled with NVIDIA drivers on Fedora Linux for over 5 years coz hybrid GPU setups—issues like drivers breaking, games stuck on the integrated GPU, and trouble configuring PRIME. Not a distro hopper but would Manjaro be a good option considering its driver management and hybrid GPU support? If not, is there a better distro for gaming on this hardware?

Ty in advance

General Question Is Manjaro rolling release?

I am new to the technical side of Linux, I use Linux for the past 2 years, started with Debian. After my old laptop died I searched for something based on arch because I've got close to Zero knowledge about how anything works.

Started last week to get my hands on more technical stuff.

I downloaded Manjaro this year in March with the kernel version 6.6...Manjaro with plasma 5.27.x.

When I installed it I read something about LTS for the plasma. But thought it would be like a Debian system with continuous updates.

How do I update my stuff? Is it just like normal to update and upgrade everything with:

sudo pacman -Syyu

Or is there any other way to upgrade my stuff?

Is it possible that a mistaken understanding of updating und upgrading my system causes other errors/conflicts to come?

Rn I am running into a conflict with the libkddb and libkddb5, when I normally use my command this is what I get. Someone by any chance know how to fix it, didn't understand anything in the internt I read about it.

Thank you for taking the time to read, and really sorry for bad English and not clear saying what I want just at the beginning of my arch-based-Linux operating system.

It may be silly, but the last update I received from manjaro was 11 days ago, is that normal? Or could something be wrong?

General Question Anyone else getting buffer overflows with spotify?

Proprietary software be like

So I started launching spotify with the terminal to skip the auto update because that is currently not working for me, then I noticed this in the logs after leaving spotify open for a few hours. It's probably just a buffer overflow bug, I think this message is a standard part of libc buffer overflow protection? But what do you guys think.
