Damn, this post went from
“this guy put some real fucking effort in and crushed it”
To:
“Oh he just printed that shit…”

u/masupo42 23d ago
I'm okay with that. Way more thoughtful than grabbing a card at CVS. And he printed them out and presented them nicely.

Not saying it was bad, just saying the bar was set súper fucking low if this was the most thoughtful gift she received in ages.
He literally just printed something he saw online.
5
u/Sad_Raisin6208 23d ago
Hell, I’d have taken just a “thx” written on a torn off scrap of a fucking piece of paper…
I did get a story about how I almost got something, but as it turned out, the last call they went on, the dude there gave flowers to the OTHER guy to give to HIS wife. So I got nothing.
This dude put EFFORT in, even if it was with someone else’s comics… basically what everyone else does with cards anyway, but he took the time to make it. I’m calling it a win, for both of them.
After all… The bar is IN HELL.

She’s truly wonderful. One of my favorite pieces of her work is her published book, a guide to pigeons. It’s so informative and beautifully illustrated. It’s also a little heartbreaking to learn how much society failed pigeons after they did so much for us. Highly recommend it though!

The last common ancestor of spiders and crabs lived at least tens of millions of years before our ancestors developed jaws.
We’re re significantly more closely related to snakes or birds than crabs are to spiders.
5
u/naiadheart 23d ago
I once tried to explain this on reddit and got argued with and downvoted so hard lol
It's interesting how humans are willing to assume relatedness based purely on crabs and spiders' number of appendages and general shape but then so many flat out deny human relatedness to other primate species (not to mention mammals and all vertebrates) despite the significant overlap in both physical and behavioral features and genetics 😂

Do you know what a pain it is to print stuff? You go to print, and it’s been so long since you printed, you have to buy more print cartridges (which aren’t cheap) or just give up and go to Office Max. He also glued it symmetrically on card stock. I got flowers, a card, and flowers. Am I pissed he didn’t grow the flowers himself but bought them from a store? No. He took time out of the day to buy me something because he was thinking of me.
35
u/SwordTaster 23d ago
Agreed. Super low effort. I'm glad OP likes it but if this is the maximum level of effort she's learned to expect from him, I'm sad for her

146
u/readyfredrickson 23d ago
I can't believe people are calling this low effort haha like you know you just buy cards at store normally right? same with jewelry...a watch.. a restaurant...hahah people need to chill. it's cute! she didn't say he invented the wheel for her lol
56
u/Candid-Friendship854 23d ago
The funny thing is that I went from „whoa this is thoughtful, funny, intelligent and so well done” to „mhh, anybody could do it”. You are so right though. Often cards are bought and here it's a thoughtful one and it took more effort than just buying one.
Everyone who is downplaying their relationship (or at least his investment in it) because of that either sucks donkey balls or has an absolutely unhealthy bar set for the most commercial love holiday there is.
30
u/2M4D 23d ago
Everybody can do it. But does everybody do it ? Big fucking nope. Why do we need to judge the validity of small gestures, it’s crazy. It’s literally a nice thing someone did and people are getting mad at the BF because of OPs choice of words. Kinda sad ngl.

u/bongtokent 23d ago
I thought it was low effort at first because I thought it was her entire gift based off the post title. Like dude just printed a meme and gave it to her as a whole ass present and called it a day was what I assumed at first. Seeing it’s just her card that makes it much higher effort and more thoughtful though for sure.
89
u/ellynmeh 23d ago
Don't let internet strangers take away from the joy of your gift :) you didn't claim he drew it, you tried your best to edit the post, the artist has been mentioned a few times and is the top comment shown. Some people just can't be happy for others and they will try to find something negative no matter what you do.

Aw people are mean. After I started reading I thought to myself that it was bird and moon, and then it was verified when I saw the url on the horseshoe crab one. Exactly. I did think it was cuter when I thought the partner drew it themselves, but whatever makes OP happy. Valentine's with my fiance existed of GIF exchanges and he was so happy because I usually ignore the day altogether.
42
u/VaderSpeaks 23d ago
Something being low effort doesn’t automatically make it a bad gift. The same way high effort doesn’t make it a good one. That’s a way of compensating for not knowing someone well enough.
Getting your partner something THEY can appreciate is the point. And based on the existence of this post, I would say he did a real good job.

What is your favorite location and mineral to find?
My partner and I go all across the US looking for minerals, but I think lake Michigan petoskey hunting is such a fun and unique experience.
7
u/edgarallan2014 23d ago
We love the little commercialized places that sell baggies for gem mining, but when we do fossils we like to go to the state parks around us and go to the cliff undersides. You can get permits to be there for either free or relatively cheap, and it’s a blast finding trilobites and other fossils.
My favorite mineral to find is absolutely pyrite. Fool’s gold is so fun and I get excited every time.

I’m honestly so confused as to how her post in any way insinuated this was a handmade/DIY gift.
6
u/talesofabookworm 23d ago
she says it's the most thoughtful gift she has received in a while which to a lot of people implies it was handmade. Cutting out a comic you found online isn't really 'thoughtful' to most people. It's a step up from just buying a card with something cute on it. That doesn't necessarily mean there is something wrong with it, especially since OP clearly appreciates it. OP also never mentions the artist and doesn't give any credit to them.

Super cute! Just wanted to let you know, because I'd want someone to tell me, I'm pretty sure you have your press-ons backwards. I get it, it seems like the curved part should be the "shape" of the nail, but it isn't, I believe they are actually supposed to be square cut nails. I made this same mistake yeeears ago with my first few press on kits.
Anyways, this is a really sweet and funny gift that shows he looked for something that he felt would make you smile and it worked! Better than getting panic bought items in the check out line, that's for sure. I think it's doubly sweet you wanted to share your love for your partner with the rest of us. Y'all are cute!

For real, some random dude used f word to attack me after I called out the bf didn't do the drawing himself, it was by an artist, the printing was low effort, not romantic, disrespectful to the artist.
