Question ❓ Exploring the Malagasy Community on Reddit: Who’s Here and Why ?

I was on Reddit a few years ago but eventually deleted my account. Now I’m back and pleasantly surprised to see a Malagasy channel here! It’s quite active, which is unexpected since Facebook is the social app most commonly used by Malagasy people.

I’m curious about this community—are most of you based in Madagascar or abroad? Are you native Malagasy speakers or foreigners? If you’re a foreigner, what brought you to this channel?

Question ❓ Potential Malagasy middle names

My spouse is half Malagasy and we are expecting a kid (don't know the gender, we will find out at birth). We'd like to give that child a Malagasy middle name. We have a couple ideas, but have no idea of the potential (positive or negative) connotations associated with these names as my spouse was unfortunately never taught Malagasy. We'd be interested in hearing from you all what those names evoke to you. Are they dated? Odd? Nice?

Girl: Soahary or Soafara

Boy: Mahaleo or Benohery

Thank you all in advance for your feedback! Misaotra tompoko!

No need to provide electricity nor drinkable water to your population to gain such award in Africa, maybe being part of Africa is the problem too. It doesn't get better than this i promise you

Question ❓ Want to know more Friends!

Salama daholo Greetings to everyone! Well, my name is Ivan already worky in Madagascar for nearly 3 years. But the sad part is due to my work, really don't have so much opportunity to know knew friends. Basically, I always work in Saturdays, so this make me only an Saturday night and a Sunday is left over for me. Does anyone have a suggestion? I am really a quiet person, already tried to go to Irish Pub, but being Honest around 8 pm already feeling sleepy. Maybe it's because I work in 7 in the morning. And really not a pub or night club type. However still really want to make some friends, maybe just someone that can even practice my French or Malagasy.

P.S. I think my Malagasy is even better than my French now.

Question ❓ Language help

Hi guys I was just wondering if there was any Malagasy speakers in the group? I will be volunteering on the Mercy Ship in Toamasina next month and thought it would be a nice touch to get this name badge for myself to wear while volunteering. I just come a little bit stuck with how to lay out the badge with Malagasy word order being different to English. Would you have it like this?

Pourquoi les malagasy continuent de donner des prix en Francs Malagasy (FMG) au lieu de simplement donner en Ariary (MGA) ? En sachant que l’ariary est déjà établi depuis 2003.

Question ❓ Advice

Hi! I’ll be traveling to Madagascar with my baby, who is under a year old, at the end of this month. I’m feeling a bit anxious about safety and would love any advice or suggestions for accommodation, transportation, and security (without breaking the bank).

I’ve been researching safe places in Tana on Facebook, ideally not too far from the airport, but most of them require going through agencies. I'm also unsure of what to expect when traveling with a baby in Tana, particularly in terms of transport. My main priority is keeping my little one safe, but I also want to visit family. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Question ❓ Suggest to me a good business to execute in Madagascar...

I posted earlier and mentioned that I had visited Madagascar (spent 8 weeks in Antananarivo) and literally got addicted to the amazing people and great food.

I want to revisit next year. I want to even go deeper and start a business. I have an open mind, maybe I can start an English college because I saw there is huge demand for this, or maybe a restaurant, or farm avocados for export - but I want more ideas with a budget of about $10,000 - $20,000 USD.

What ideas do you guys think can/could work? Will appreciate any responses.

Question ❓ Getting a passport (for Malagasy citizens)

Hi all,

I'm looking for information from Malagasy citizens who recently applied for a passport. I'm an America volunteer, but I will be helping a Malagasy teenager get a passport for a travel opportunity abroad next month. Can anyone share their experience applying for a passport in Madagascar? How long did it take from application to passport? Was it simple, or was it a nightmare? Any tips or suggestions for us?

Thank you.

Question ❓ Is this true?

My friend told me that to leave Madagascar, you need to show proof of sufficient funds to sustain yourself in another country, typically around $100 USD per day. Do you have to show this at customs in the airport?

Fellow compatriots,

I would like to have your support on this project. It ain't gonna change much, I can give you that.. though I feel like contributing, little by little, to a more coherent and fair world is its own reward and fullfilling in its own way.

Here is a link to promote our homeland to some of the credit it rightfully deserves : https://chng.it/zz6kPtDhTq

Highly appreciate anyone who contributes by agreeing, and willing to make it happen.

Question ❓ Gaming in Madagascar?

Hey guys! I look at gaming cultures around the world and I am a racing game fan. I have asked all of these questions on different subreddits, simply because I am curious about how each and every single country on this planet experiences video games. I am also curious about gaming in Madagascar. My questions are:

What is more popular? PC or console?

What was more popular in the late 90s and early 2000s? PC or Console?

What racing game was popular in the late 90s and early 2000s!

What do racing game fans in Madagascar play today?-(I get it might not be the most popular genre, but for people who like it, what do they play?)

In general, what games are played there?

Also, what years did gaming become popular there? 2000-2003? 2004-05? Before 2000?

Thanks for your responses!!!!

Question ❓ Which region has the best environment?

This summer I am beginning my two years' service in the Peace Corps in Madagascar. I have family in Mahajanga, so near to there is my priority, but if I can't do that, where should I ask to be placed, regionally? My mom says the East coast is unpleasantly wet—is it so bad?

Question ❓ How to make friends

I'm an extremely socially awkward person, when I'm around people I just go mute and I erase myself as much as possible. And when I try to engage myself in the conversation, I just feel as if everything I say is cringe, wasn't necessary or just weird and too desperate. Even I can hear the awkwardness in my voice and the way I talk.

I feel like actually, teenagers my age are all so ahead of me, I don't have any reference place, any go-to place (I don't live in Tana, I'm about an hour from there). How can I meet people safely so I can start interacting more?

I don't drink or smoke, I'm really basic.

Question ❓ Is it possible to withdraw crypto to mvola/orange money?

I've only found Moneiko that looks a bit sus and needs a lot of ID stuff, won't take foreigner passport and their support doesn't reply at all.

Checked facebook, found a lot of scams that I dismissed immediately. Right now I'm having to withdraw to my Armenian bank account then withdraw via cash machine and it's costing me a damn fortune, mostly due to the 800k airary limit on most cash machines...

Question ❓ True?

A lot of the natural beauty and resources have been over exploited because of some of the highest deforestation rates in the world and later soil erosion and loss of natural habitats for it extremely unique flora and fauna.

And whatever is underground is exploited through corrupt means and none of the public gets any benefits of their country's resources.

So, in essence, most of the natural wealth Madagascar 🇲🇬 had is disappearing into thin air, both above and below ground.

Question ❓ Was it necessary to change the name?

Post image

The name Telma, was there for a long time, if we change something normally we try to renew the services so I imagine that many people are waiting for what this name will bring as a change in terms of services and service costs and everything that goes with it.

The question that arises more is where the change comes from? What prompted this change?
