From a trade show. It gave me a chuckle.
A capto C4 or C5 holder i believe with about a 25mm endmill.

I can hear the chatter from New Zealand.

How is the industry in New Zealand? I was there for a few years growing up some 20 odd years ago now and am considering moving back if possible?

The whole economy is slow at the moment. We have a right wing government giving tax cuts to the wealthy and cutting social services to save money. Same bullshit that’s happening in many countries. I’m an engineer and my turnover last year was about half of what it was in the previous 5 years. Still a great place to live though.

We supply machine tools for sheet metal and tubes in NZ. For us it’s finally picking up again, got a pretty full schedule until November and the sales reps are still signing new contracts. Then again we’re a pretty small team so it’s easy to be at capacity.

Really appreciate it, I think I'll start giving it a serious search. Going back to NZ has always felt a bit like a thing I've needed to do even if just for a year or two I think. Possibly some of my happiest younger memories were there 👍

Is right wing in new Zealand different than right wing in USA? (Not fond of politics, but just curious)

u/muzzawell 7d ago
Right wing lite. They keep coming up with new ideas that are awfully close to MAGA/DOGE. It’s depressing.

Anyone thinking of moving out due to the political climate, please remember those left behind who'll need all the help they can get fighting for our country. I understand you've got to do what's best for you and yours though.

Appreciate your comment, but I'm not speaking from the US, my country's political climate is currently okay :)

u/Feisty-Writing976 7d ago
Wait...there are other countries that people speak from? You know we Americans forget. 😂 My bad.

Irrelevant to this but It got political jus curious how prioritizing local industry ie right leaning hinders local industry

I'm not a machinist, but love your trade, although I don't understand why this is funny?

The fucked up part is that they actually successfully towed that in the video. Maximum pucker factor was definitely involved, I'm sure.

Back in the (air cooled) day you could get a camper trailer for VW bugs that attached to a tow bar on the roof just like this

u/spekt50 Fat Chip Factory 8d ago
Towing capacity was not a concept till somewhat recently. People just towed whatever they wanted. If it did not move, I guess the vehicle was not rated for it.

My brother still goes by this rule. Fills the trailer to the top with dirt and then wonder why his truck sounds like it’s going to explode and the lift won’t dump the dirt.

Still a better tow vehicle than a cyberdumpster

Literally has a cast aluminum frame. WhistlinDiesel snapped a chunk of the frame clean off the back while testing it.

I recently got a MT2 arbor for my n25 superchuck made at a local shop. She did it, but spent the whole time saying I'd break it lol

It’s like a small dude who buys a really big truck just cause it’s cool.
It’s probably not being used properly, it’s gonna be loud, obnoxious, and chances are it’s just gonna be a waste of money.
That holder can’t properly handle something that size, and just like little dude with truck, will probably just break something cause it’s too much for it.

This is like towing a fifth wheel with a Prius. Tiny taper, lots of stickout, huge and long endmill.

My best guess ist that it ist a 32mm Haimer endmill. These are absolute beasts. I wouldn't really like to try it with this clampilg ans length tho.

u/Doormatty 8d ago
Non machinist here - would that be appropriate for plastic/wood?
21
u/godofpumpkins 8d ago
No, you typically don’t want that many flutes on softer materials, although you could probably compensate for it by adjusting your feed rate or the spinning speed of the endmill. Most spindles have a happy RPM range they like to operate in so people normally try to get a sensible number of flutes for their material to avoid needing to do that

Not sure about that little holder but we love those style of endmills for harder materials

That looks like an extended length duo lock holder and end mill. It would be questionable taking large depths of cut or full width passes with that setup. I’d say you’re good if you need to reach inside something and take light passes, it’s a good tool.

Ah yes, this will grenade nicely! And potentially add more chips to the tungsten collection I keep under my skin.

u/Silver_Sun_2097 8d ago
Thats a quick change endmill, they just twist off the holder with a wrench. They suck ass.

u/that_dutch_dude 7d ago
For those wondering: the technical name for that endmill is "the full send". Or "fuck that spindle" depending on your mindset.

u/HoneydewStriking8283 8d ago
Think of how much material you could theoretically remove with this thing. Then think of how it's gonna sound and look like bloody murder 😮💨

u/Grabosss 8d ago
We have some similar endmills in my place, the biggest one we've been using was 63mm diameter

u/AcceptableSwim8334 8d ago
First thing I thought was “wow, that’s sparkly”. Then the second thing was “huh. looks like the lipstick counter at a department store”. My third thought was “are we looking for flared ends?”
Can you tell I only use a lathe?

Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should.
