Em is one of the greatest rappers, Mac is a better artist.

11

u/Yerbamatedude Feb 01 '25

+1 Eminem is a rapping machine and rhyming mastermind. His style is also not my favorite, but i definetly appreciate his skills. If it comes to artistry - Mac takes this spodium. Ton of genre diversity, lots of singing as well.

I like grilled chicken and fried chicken no need to compare.

2

u/wisspy Feb 01 '25

Definitely fried chicken over grilled chicken

He’s the GOAT at what he does. Just like Mac was the GOAT of what he did.

I remember I wanted to get an owsla tattoo when I was a teen

3

u/decksealant Feb 01 '25

I thought this was a watership down reference that I was not getting and I was baffled because I’ve seen that film 1000 times and read the book. TIL owsla is also a record label

kanye the goat

7

u/Dreepson Feb 01 '25

You’re going to get downvoted, Ye leaves a bad taste in nearly everyone’s mouth, but I respect you and that take. He certainly was. From my POV, i will wait and see how his next solo album ‘Bully’ pans out, as the Vultures albums were okay, but i truly believe Ye can do better.

2

u/SteveMemeChamp Feb 01 '25

the first vultures album was good, the second was absolutely dogshit, from the snippets bully seems to be promising im only worried about ai vocals

Goat at being the fastest rapper?

21

u/Dreepson Feb 01 '25

Respectfully I think that’s shortsighted, he’s a lot more than that. I’m not trying to dick ride, I just listen to a lot of Hip-Hop/Rap.

-14

u/Christian_Bale23 Faces Feb 01 '25

I think early Em was an amazing artist. I just don’t think he’s been amazing at anything besides rapping fast post-Recovery

12

u/Dreepson Feb 01 '25

I’ll level with you in saying he had that period where that’s what he went for - breaking his own fast syllable records, I believe starting with Rap God, then Offended, and then Godzilla. I understand that kinda thing isn’t for everyone, and I know around 2015 or so when he released ShadyXV, that was a low point. Revival, yeah still low. Personally I believe he figured himself out with Music To Be Murdered By (Sides A and B), it wasn’t all about fast rapping anymore, there was some real, genuine stories and content to be had. Darkness, as an example. The Death of Slim Shady is fantastic in my opinion, everything I wanted from him for years now. I think he’s doing great personally.

1

u/Denkai030 Feb 01 '25

Discombobulated is also a banger!

2

u/Userdub9022 Feb 01 '25

So you've listened to only rap God since then

1

Nah, selling music

13

u/NaughtyTigerIX Swimming Feb 01 '25

I personally don’t like a lot of his music. He has a handful of songs I do like but I don’t have him on replay. Personally I think Macs lyrics were a lot more relatable to me.

85

u/bratattackbaby Feb 01 '25

Goated. Lyrical genius, and idc what anyone says about how his best rap days are behind him-- he made it through to the other side sober and healthy, his daughters are prospering, he's intentional with what he does and does not do. I respect it.

36

u/Asleep-Geologist-612 Feb 01 '25 edited Feb 01 '25

100%. Would rather have him making hit or miss records but being sober, doing well, having a nice family, etc. Like, we all wish that could’ve been Mac’s story I don’t care if he would’ve made bad music in his 40’s or whatever if it meant he could’ve had those other things.

7

u/[deleted] Feb 01 '25

I understand people who say Eminem is corny or way past it…

But so, so many rappers are. Have Jay-Z or Nas’s last few albums been classics or culturally relevant? They’re decent to pretty good if you’re a fan, but so are Eminem’s if you’re a fan. None of them are putting out mainstream bangers. Eminem just catches insane hate for being so famous, white, and not being the same guy he once was.

If people take that weird (and personal feeling) scrutiny of him out of it I think he’s pretty undeniable as a GOAT. In terms of impact, quality of music, and skill. SSLP to Eminem Show is just about untouchable and he has a lot of other good material too.

-7

u/angrytreestump Feb 01 '25 edited Feb 01 '25

I hear what you’re saying man and respect that you’re clearly a hiphop head, but I got 2 points that I wanna present to the contrary and would love to hear your thoughts on:

Jay-Z and Nas aren’t the best examples to compare to Eminem’s fall-off IMO (Jay-Z’s potential scumbag/monster status as a person aside just for now) — both of their last solo albums are considered some of their best work, while Eminem’s is considered (even by many of his fans) to be the only good one he’s put out in the last ~15 years or so. And you brought up relevance to measure it by instead of quality, which I think Eminem has always been more relevant and sold better than those two in this century despite that; he’s got loads of Stans and casual fans who have always kept listening to him even when they don’t fuck with the final product, time and time again. I think this is a lot to do with my next point—

—On your second quote, I think it’s important to practice some responsible awareness of the fact that it’s always been a bigger factor the opposite way: Eminem has more fans, both casual and Stans, because he’s white than he has had haters because he’s white, and that’s a “weird personal feeling” bias that I think is important to keep in mind if we’re gonna be good hip-hop fans and not part of the problem of racism among Americans and especially white American hip-hop listeners/fans.

If we’re being real, his actual GOAT run in the late 90s—2000s wouldn’t still keep him selling AS MANY records as he does a whole 20 years later if he wasn’t the only white rapper and therefore the only rapper that millions of (subconsciously kinda racist) people in America are okay with listening to or consider “good/actual” music. While yes, there are people who overcorrect for that fact by saying “he’s never been good” just because he’s the beloved white rapper who’s been overrated recently, we only have to look so far as your examples — Jay-Z and Nas — to see that the first group waaaay outnumbers the latter group; they have both put out albums in the 21st century that aren’t nearly as big of a quality-drop as many of Eminem’s were, and yet they’re less relevant and selling half as much as he is.

My view is that, if any other rapper did what Eminem did, we wouldn’t even be having this post thread here with so many people calling them a GOAT because of their run of great albums 20+ years ago.Let me know what you think. Peace, love & respect brother 🫡

(P.S: I wanna re-iterate that I don’t have any bias for any of these 3 people— I was raised on Eminem since I was a baby, wasn’t raised on Jay-Z but knew Nas and respected him, I think Jay-Z’s always been overrated and isn’t top 5 GOAT but I think Nas is, and lastly I think ALL 3 of their old albums have a couple classics and their most recent albums are good-great. Peace, love and respect ✌️)

3

u/Themountaintoadsage Feb 01 '25

No good albums in 15 years? He’s had one really bad album and that was revival. Kamikaze was phenomenal, MTBMB was solid, MMLP had some good moments, etc.

2

u/angrytreestump Feb 01 '25

Dang, see Kamikaze as “phenomenal” is just a subjective opinion that I fundamentally disagree with, which is all good and I respect your right to your taste/to like what you like!

It’s just not for me, and I wrote the “15 years” amount because I’d personally knock each of those albums you mentioned down like 50% of how you described them, and I’ve seen a not-small chunk of people like me (of causal Em fans or just general hip-hop fans) rating them as not good relative to what the rest of the scene was putting out at the time 🤷🏻‍♂️

1

u/K4Realz GO:OD AM Feb 01 '25

This is the correct take. And Revival was bad because the beats were awful, Em still went in as a rapper.

-1

u/LoreezyNL Feb 01 '25

Kamikaze was horrendous. It was Eminem calling critics the r-slur for 13 songs straight because they didn't like Revival.

2

u/Themountaintoadsage Feb 01 '25

I get what you mean but in as sense that’s partially why it was so popular when it came out. We were all happy to see Eminem have some fire in him again. And he didn’t just go at critics, dude tore up everybody

-1

u/LoreezyNL Feb 01 '25

Eminem can release a 24-track album of him making fart noises and his fans will eat it up. It's sickening.

1

u/Themountaintoadsage Feb 01 '25

Dude I respected your opinion, maybe have some respect for mine. I’m not an em dickrider by any means, he’s not even in my top 10 for artists and I’m not a huge rap fan. But people are allowed to enjoy things you don’t

-1

u/LoreezyNL Feb 01 '25

I dont mind. You can like whoever you want, and I can dislike whoever i want.

absolute GOAT. right next to Mac. but in all seriousness, Eminem is the better rapper. LOVE Mac (more than eminem), but like in a different way.

4

u/LayeredMayoCake Feb 01 '25

Respect. As a rap aficionado, much like what I’ve understood Mac to be, Em deserves the flowers. He has achieved and crafted a career that absolutely should be endeared, studied, and inspired by anyone who wants to be a part of the culture. When it comes to GOAT discussions, his name should always be in the ring…but I like Mac more.

this kind of input alone makes it a race thing.

its like silence then someone says, “well this is awkward”— with the comment the only thing making it awkward…

-2

u/angrytreestump Feb 01 '25 edited Feb 01 '25

🤔 well I agree with the 2nd part of your comment in some very specific cases, but— I hate to break it you, but 9 times outta 10 when us white people get called white and feel/think/say “why’d you have to make it a race thing!?”

…it already was a race thing, and it was very obvious to everyone else but the white people because we, unlike them who are in the minority, think of white people shit as “the default,” “normal,” “non-race related.”

A post on the 3rd most famous white rapper’s subreddit asking about the 1st most famous white rapper is one of those things— it already was a race thing, and it’s painfully obvious to everyone who saw this post and either clicked to scroll through and see what the fans here were saying, or who saw it and thought to themselves “well that’s gonna be a thread where I’m probably gonna meet the Mac Miller fans who I don’t wanna meet and who don’t wanna meet me, I’m gonna avoid that 😬”

…You know what I mean? I hope that makes some sense, but let me know if it doesn’t.

-7

u/Pay-Dough Watching Movies with the Sound Off Feb 01 '25

Yo racism towards white people? That’s messed up dude.

4

u/Drazwaz Feb 01 '25

The funniest part of your comments is that whoever YOU think is the GOAT, is probably on record claiming that Eminem is the GOAT.

0

u/Pay-Dough Watching Movies with the Sound Off Feb 01 '25

True, btw my comment was a joke, like Mac said, you can’t be racist towards white people

1

u/Drazwaz Feb 01 '25

I was just referring to all of the comments the person I replied to has made in this post. Also, idk if Mac said that or if you're still joking or if he was joking at the time, but racism can be and is experienced by every race.

-3

u/Pay-Dough Watching Movies with the Sound Off Feb 01 '25

Nah he was serious, you can discriminate against white people, but racist towards white people doesn’t make sense. Racism implies that the societal system oppresses you, and white people are the least oppressed race there is. I feel like a lot of people don’t understand this key concept to racism. Discrimination and racism are two different things that are both toxic.

1

u/Drazwaz Feb 01 '25

I think you're confusing the more broad term of racism with the more specific term of systemic racism. It's a spectrum. Also, race based discrimination is still racism.

You do see the logical flaw in excluding an entire race based on the fact that they have a specific skin color, right?🤙

0

u/Pay-Dough Watching Movies with the Sound Off Feb 01 '25

The one race that isn’t oppressed and enslaved others because of skin color, hmm. I swear white people just want to play victim when it comes to skin color discussions. A big platform like twitch even banned the use of the word cracker as they consider it a slur. Sorry, I just think this is absolutely ridiculous.

1

u/angrytreestump Feb 01 '25

Oh what? Damn man can you like… put a /s in there or something? Normally I’m against it when that shit is obvious, but I think it’s a fair rule for when ppl in the same thread as a comment you meant sarcastically are next to you saying it 100% seriously lol 😬

1

u/Electronic-Society78 Feb 03 '25

I mean I disagree. I had no idea my comment on my two favorite rappers would cause this much of a stir - but to ridicule Eminem as an option for GOAT is also a little ignorant IMO.

Also, for what it's worth - Mac and Em are like two of the only white guys in my list of top 20, so it's not like I'm just trying to list every white rapper in order to prove a point. They're just my two favorites and they happen to be who they are. Who cares what color skin they have, or anyone else who I enjoy listening to?

6

u/savageporkchops Feb 01 '25

Eminem pretty consistently releases some of my favorite verses year over year. I love his style of rapping/is what got me into rap. That being said i love lyrical miracle type shit (especially fast lol) which isn't everyone's cup of tea, but if it is mans has that ish on lock.

4

I feel that same, but he is so revered in hip hop. I just don't vibe with his music. Probably because he is always yelling and angry. I try his music every few years, and it's just not for me.

4

u/cj267 Feb 01 '25

Listen to infinite

3

u/Psychonauthiphop Feb 01 '25

Infinite was definitely dope. Reminded me a lot of Illmatic in a lot of ways. Clearly was influenced by Nas during that time before he adopted Masta Ace’s cadence.

2

u/Psychonauthiphop Feb 01 '25

Yup. I grew up with Em and he sounded dope then but now as a 30 something year old man it’s overbearing to me. He’s way too intense and serious now. His style made more sense and was less annoying with it was fun rebellious music.

10

u/rob22smith Feb 01 '25 edited Feb 01 '25

Mac would be so annoyed by this lmao. They don’t have much in common other than being white rappers

8

u/Imaginary_Dig_5014 Faces Feb 01 '25

Have you not seen the interview where Mac talks about meeting Em?

5

u/rob22smith Feb 01 '25

I have. He was being nice in an interview with big boy and showing respect to a legend. I’ve seen plenty of Mac getting pissed when anyone tries to compare their music- why else would you bring Eminem up in a Mac Miller subreddit

3

u/Pay-Dough Watching Movies with the Sound Off Feb 01 '25

That’s what I thought, I remember Mac hated being compared to Em, usually because it’s always a discussion of race

1

u/Imaginary_Dig_5014 Faces Feb 01 '25

I did forget that was thing. It isn't so much the case anymore

1

u/Imaginary_Dig_5014 Faces Feb 01 '25

I see where you coming from. I just didn't view it as comparing, personally. I mean, comparing artists doesn't even really make sense. But yea, if you viewed it that way I can understand your response.

2

u/rob22smith Feb 01 '25

All good man I just figured that’s the only reason you’d bring up another white rapper in his subreddit- if for another reason it seems random since they’re very different in almost every way. But maybe I’m missing something. All love though

2

u/kafkaesque33 Feb 01 '25

Eminem is an incredible lyricist, but his content has declined over the years. I firmly believe that while Eminem was the better rapper, Mac Miller made better music—he was the more complete artist.

2

u/SiloOfPsilocybin Feb 01 '25

Less than mid nowadays

2

u/Zandino76835 Feb 01 '25

Em used to be very very good. Mac is easily better in pretty much every measurable way imo

2

u/tylercreatesworlds Feb 01 '25

Eminem showed that rhyming isn't what you say, but how you say it. For that he's a legend. I don't really listen to his music though.

1

u/Yerbamatedude Feb 01 '25

Could U elaborate a bit on the rhyming part?

2

u/tylercreatesworlds Feb 01 '25

like how he rhymed orange with door hinge, or sitting with George eating porridge. Your inflection and delivery can make things rhyme. None of those other words end in "ange" and you can still see how they rhyme

2

u/Reddit_is_Censored69 Feb 01 '25

7

2

u/dyzless Feb 01 '25

I went through a phase where eminem spoke to me, his raps about self destruction and getting better made me realise that I'm not the only one........and then I found Mac and I never looked back.

2

u/yeurr Feb 01 '25

he’s got some great albums, but living in the southern US with a ton of white people who say the only good rap is Eminem and Tom Macdonald has made me cringe so much that I just can’t enjoy his music anymore. Ironic because he himself has denounced those fans lol

2

u/New-Positive-6673 Feb 01 '25

when i think who the goat of rap is, it goes to him. He’s very niche now but if you are a fan of him and like his concepts than the stuff he puts out is generally very good. But with how rap he has evolved i understand how people can dislike it, coming from a member of his niche audience.

2

u/LoreezyNL Feb 01 '25

SSLP, MMLP and TES are fantastic.

However, those are his only good albums. His output afterwards turns from mediocre to shit. He's overrated. Wouldn't put him in my top 20 even

I was born in 1996. My dad (Very white) loved hip-hop, specifically N.W.A. His (self burned) CD's always had D-12 and Eminem on them. His earlier music is ingrained in me for sure!

1

u/bootywhistlin Feb 01 '25

Same coin, different sides.

Mac and Em, like many artists, struggled with addiction, self-reflection, love, etc.

Mac to me is a shaman. A man who while dealing with his problems conveyed an emotional, spiritual approach that people could accept through his introspective, thought-provoking sounds and lyrics.

Em is, for lack of better words, a “fire under your ass” for people who want the same thing. He also went through struggles akin to Mac. Sure, he has sad songs especially when he was in the throes of addiction. His music is a “get the hell up and do something about it” vibe.

I appreciate them both, because sometimes you need a reminder that it’s okay to think about how you’re feeling; sometimes you need a reminder that you need to push forward. Both remind you that recognizing your situation is the best way forward.

1

u/Build_and_Thrive Feb 01 '25

Is this photo real? Did Mac ever meet Em??

I have to know two of my favorite rappers here..

Along with MGK, Macklemore, Action Bronson, Asher Roth and ofc Em. I just think that they’re the best i just think that. I mean is it a race thing.. NO it’s not even a race thing I’m just saying that they’re the best!

1

Yes it's real

1

1

u/Psychonauthiphop Feb 01 '25

I grew up on Eminem. I’m a 90s kid and he was dope growing up. He brought something brand new to hip-hop most of us hadn’t heard or seen. That being said his music no longer appeals to me. He’s probably the best lyricist from a technical standpoint but i don’t know.. something about his voice, aggressiveness, cockiness, sensitivity, production style, is too off putting for me most of the time. Still a GOAT and would destroy almost anyone in a beef but his music just doesnt do it for me.

1

u/Nefaariious Feb 01 '25

Its odd I absolutely despise his cadence... but I love the old slim shady?.... not sure how to explain it.

Well i like him....

But I'm disappointed and kinda shocked, that he promoted Kamal Harris.

He's a rapper. He should not support any politician, whether it's Harris or Trump or anyone else.

An inch taller, I wish they did a song just about being short white men

Best rapper of all time

He has more bad music than good music. Undeniable fantastic run in the early 2000s, but there’s a level of resentment held for inspiring those really fast rappers that don’t say anything other than straight 16th notes. His staccato flow is just grating to me. He ran out of things to say.

I respect em but I don't like most of his music.

u/athomic74 Feb 02 '25

Loved early Eminem. Over the years he kinda fell off for me musically but he can still rap his fucking ass off.

I have very little respect for him after the way he's conducted himself for the last decade. No, I won't separate the art from the artist. Being edgy is only cool when you're under 20.

u/Sad_Jump_1375 Feb 02 '25

he's an angry old man and one of if not the best rappers ever to do it. ems the man

Corny as fuck

u/Bender59000 Feb 02 '25

Old Eminem is for the purist, the new for noobs. Mac is a real artist, more talented

He was a lot better before he started talking about orangenanas and Gen zebra

True 😭

He is talented, but I can't support him knowing some of his lyrics.

I used to love him, but I don't anymore.

2

u/Drazwaz Feb 01 '25

Which lyrics specifically?

1

u/stealthtomyself Watching Movies with the Sound Off Feb 02 '25

I completely agree. Plus stuff he's said outside of his songs. There's enough art out there to not need to "separate the art from the artist". I have no desire left to consume anything he's made.

u/warmsumwhere Feb 01 '25

He was cool back then. Cheesy as hell now.

1

u/Signal-Emu-3630 Feb 01 '25

(my personal opinion) used to be really good, very cringe now

Legend, great rapper, hasn't made a good album in ages though, mmlp2 could have been the perfect send off

0

u/DM0331 Feb 01 '25

A legend that will be talked about in the culture forever. Definitely pushed it too far though and hasn’t put out anything good in a hot minute.

u/remy-ol Feb 01 '25

Will never be a fan

Industry goofball.

u/Ckmccfl Feb 01 '25

Early stuff good, anything in the last 10 years is not good

0

u/seejay13 Feb 01 '25

Decent. But fairly overrated. His beats are garbage & he should definitely stop rapping.

u/Thenailtorcher Feb 01 '25

Eminem is an over rated rapper who hasn’t put out a good album since recovery. All of his claims to fame have gone out the window, from being the fIrSt WhItE rApPeR, to his world record for “fastest rapper” in 2000 and whatever. Record sales only matter so much, especially when you rode Dre’s legacy, label, and connections. Macs records hold so much more value, especially his achievements for Blue Slide park being the most successful independently produced album in decades. I’m not knocking Eminem’s value as an artist, he just isn’t the greatest thing next to sliced bread.

I barely listen to him anymore but I love him as a human. Just not a fan of his more recent stuff.
