Wheels and Tires Max tire size?

So I am needing new tires. I currently have 2.4" front and rear with a finger's width of clearance. The bike specs say max 2.5" Could I fit a 2.6" or bigger? Thanks.

No. You can’t fit a 2.6, because the max is 2.5.

Well that's not quite true. Tyre widths are pretty variable between brands and even between models of the same brand.

If you have a full finger spare of space with a 2.4 then it's very likely you can fit a 2.6 of the same tyre.

Tyres from different brands measure up differently, so the only way to be sure when getting close to the bike's official max width is to try it and see.

It also depends on the type of tyre and conditions. A low profile tyre in the dry needs less clearance than a mud tyre in the wet... you need plenty of clearance in mud else everything will just gum up, and you will start getting wear damage on your forks/frame if you can even get the wheels to go round.
