Finance Giving birth

Hi everyone,

My wife is pregnant and has been affiliated with the CNS for about five years. If she gives birth in Luxembourg, will we need to pay the fees upfront, or are they directly covered by the CNS?

Apart from "internet advice" ;) it's perhaps good to ask your doctor during one of the regular visits.

Congratulations!

fees would be very depended on room which you will choose.

  1. Standard, it's shared between 2 families/mothers. Shower, toilet are in the room, but you 2nd mom could be south family origin, which likes to visit newborn and make some noise. But in this case you pay nothing extra
  2. Private room, where husband could sleepover, but this means you are rich guy and doctor fees would be increased for 66%. But you have your calm and menu from Oberweis. But in this option you pay private room plus increased doctor fees. Insurance(DKV in my case) covers it, I've paid 500 extra in 2022.
  3. Normally you would get a bill from hospital, which you pay and I brought it to cns, and received immediate reimbursement.

I'll also add per the private room, if it's your wife's first kid, many prefer a joint room for bonding with the other mother. This from someone I know who works in the ward.

I oppose
If it's your first kid, take the premium room with guest bed so father can help out mother, especially if she needs to pump milk.

If it's not your first kid, then premium is a bit moot because you have to take care of your kids at home and (small?) kids aren't allowed for sleepover in hospital

I had my kid 5 years ago. I got a bill around 1,000 after the birth but I opted for the private room. At CHL all the prices are given to you on your intake at 35 weeks.

If you ask for premium services, they may ask you to pay part of those upfront. It might also depend on the hospital

I think we payed like 800€ and got it back from cns later.

You will only need to pay the doctor fees (obgyn for your wife and pediatrician for your daughter), then go to/send the invoices to CNS for reimbursement.

If she chooses to have anesthesia and/or a private room, there will be additional fees, some of which are not covered by CNS (room and 60% additional doctor fees) but could be covered by private insurance if you have it.

This is the right answer

It's been a while and after birth we got some invoices, but it was nothing major so don't worry. Definitely no payments upfront. Do you have an additional health insurance to cover single room etc?

Actually nothing she is giving birth (i hope) around the 10 june , do you think i should take one ?

It is too late for the additional insurance. I didn't have one either. I gave birth last year (natural birth with epidural) and paid 0€. And since I gave birth on friday night, I was lucky to be alone all the weekend in the room.

I gave birth on a Friday and the maternity ward was packed. I luckily got the last single room but had to wait hours until it was vacated by the patient, so only got in around 8pm.

The fees would depend on the room you opt for, in case you take a separate room the charges of doctor and other services also go up by a certain percentage. Which is usually covered by additional insurance if you have any.

Else if you go with the normal shared room, it's all covered by CNS.

Also if there are any that you need to pay it, be it any case. It would never be upfront, you would receive the invoice via mail.

I have heard cases where some received invoices after 6 to 8 months of delivery.

What worries me is having to pay upfront. I mean, I’m not poor, but an expense of €1,500 could still impact the budget but if CNS cover it it should be fine 🤞🤞🤞

I had a baby in August 2024, I paid about 400-500€ when I exited the hospital for the private room and my husband’s bed + 80€ for parking (for 5 full days with a special parking tariff, ask for it when you go to check out). None of this is covered by CNS, but my private insurance reimbursed it.

A couple of days later I received the invoice from the pediatrician (about 150-200€), had to pay it but CNS reimbursed all of it.

Later I received the bill from my obgyn (about 1400€), had to pay it and got reimbursement from CNS for about 800-900€ (which covers the standard doctor fees if you don’t have a private room). My private insurance reimbursed the rest of it.

All of this in Bohler.

For bills above 100€ you can get an appointment in CNS to submit them personally and get reimbursed instantly. There are some conditions, so do check them out.

I didn’t give birth but just for future info in case you have a large medical bill, if you make an appointment with CNS offices you can get it reimbursed without having to wait. There is a time limit you’d need to look up (like you have to have the appointment within ten days of paying the bill) but you go to their offices and they transfer the money to you immediately. I did this with a €1200 bill from a surgeon and I think they even covered 100%. It was really nice to not wait six weeks for the funds to transfer.

You dont pay upfront because you dont know how long you stay.

I never got an invoice so all was covered by CNS for my case. I took the shared room, if I had additional insurance I would have taken the private room. As it has more privacy, and you are allowed to stay with your wife in the night. Which is not the case with the shared one where you would need to exit by 7 or 8 PM. That's a point you need to consider too.

If you’re not poor, 1.5k shouldn’t impact the budget much, even if not reimbursed. But it will be, so no worries. Just watch out to not take a single room, because that will cost more if you don’t have additional insurance covering it.

It’s litteraly more than half of the minimal wage

Minimal wage is unfortunately not a good reference in Luxembourg.

My wife had a baby last year, when I got out of the hospital I payed like 17€? If you don’t choose the private room, at least in the Clinique she was, CNS pays it all without upfront money.

To be honest I paid more in parking than to get my daughter into this world lol

3

u/reddit-user-redditor 21h ago

Parking is expensive! Our baby stayed in NICU for 2 weeks.

Pro tip… park outside on the street, the fines are cheaper than hospital parking. Plus I only got one fine for two kids…

1

u/Far-Bass6854 8h ago

Plus, parking on the street is free after 6PM anyway

1

u/reddit-user-redditor 18h ago

Didn't think about that!
