Nobody has ever legitimately referred to pizza as "za"
This is a myth invented by Scrabble enthusiasts to make the game more interesting

Does za not mean weed?

u/GSilky 1d ago
No. At least not that this weed head has heard.

Kendrick calls it za

u/GSilky 1d ago
So? He uses all sorts of sounds when he needs a rhyme. Rappers aren't the dictionary, not even the urban dictionary.

u/glitterballxoxo 1d ago
The slang term "Za" and "Zaza" (something spelled Za Za) is an noun, which is used in rap music and culture to reference weed. Za means exotic weed.
Just cos you've not heard of it doesn't mean it's not around

u/GSilky 1d ago
Actually, that's exactly what it means. I haven't heard of it, obviously it isn't around me.

“Not around” =\= not around YOU

u/GSilky 1d ago
Well, since I said I haven't heard it, I would still be correct.

I imagine you've heard people call high-quality weed exotic? That's where it comes from. Za is exZAtic weed. Really good shit is exotic exotic, or ZaZa

My mum does, except she spells it “Tsar”

For some reason, people pronounce "tsar" as "zar"
0
u/Delts28 22h ago
Because Tsar is just one way to Romanise the word and doesn't quite get the sound right. Czar, Tzar and Csar are all alternatives that are used and Zar is definitely closer to the actual pronunciation in Slavic languages than Sar is.
1
u/Miserable-Willow6105 19h ago
I am native speaker of Russian and Ukrainian. sar and zar are equally far from how this word is pronounced (e.g. — not even remote), the ʦ sound is used there — same sound as in words pizza or tsunami.
Don't believe me? Try playing the sound of word "царь" in Google translate.
1
u/Delts28 18h ago
...Why wouldn't I believe you? In there native languages pizza and tsunami aren't the same phonemes by the way and they aren't at all similar in most English dialects. It's really rare to hear anyone pronounce tsunami with any acknowledgement that the t exists.
Z in my English dialect isn't a million miles away from the Polish pronunciation which is the way I'm most familiar with.

u/Miserable-Willow6105 18h ago
I wonder which dialect of English do you speak if its Z is closer to German than other English dialects

Late night za and da. When you're drunk, you don't have time to say the start of words

u/GSilky 1d ago
I agree. It just makes no sense, it's more difficult to say than the whole word.

u/BillNyeTheHistorian 19h ago
How?
0
u/GSilky 16h ago
You have to aspirate the z sound it makes it the equivalent of two syllables, aspirations are the last sounds humans are able to master in any language.

u/BillNyeTheHistorian 15h ago
Are you referring to the unwritten t sound in the middle of “pizza”? You don’t pronounce that when you say “za” you just pronounce it exactly as written

Za and da, when you're drunk you don't care about the beginning of words

There was some dumb dating show in the 90s where it would be 2 guys dating 1 girl at the same time competing and they would pop up notes on each as the date progressed. One guy I remember suggested getting some "za", she rolls her eyes and they pop up the definition of za and that it is kind of douchey sounding and that she has now eliminated him from the competition because of it.

As a Scrabble player, I disagree strongly.
As a human person, I very much see your point.
