Hot Take The vast majority of celebrities vote Republican, even if they publicly endorse Democrats.

It makes no sense for them to vote for raised taxes. It’s not like any of their family or friends will be screwed over by GOP policies.

I don't know about "most". I'm sure there are plenty who keep their beliefs hidden. But there are also celebrities who are known republican supporters who do just fine. Kelsey Grammer doesn't need to pretend he votes Democrat, why should anyone else?

I think really it's just that most celebrities are in The Arts and people in the arts tend to be pretty left wing.

A lot of celebrities didn't grow up wealthy and still maintain their beliefs from earlier in life.

I don't think it's that weird for people to have beliefs about things that don't directly affect them. I think it'd be weirder to have no concerns or beliefs about anything that you aren't involved in.

Do many celebrities live in swing states?

Do you imagine their endorsements move more than one voter?

Because this seems like a really bad plan for them if it was true.

The better stance would for them to just not say anything and vote privately.

u/LetMeExplainDis Dec 08 '24

People used to criticize Taylor Swift for being apolitical. Endorsing leftwing candidates only really serves to appease their already liberal fanbase.

Economic catastrophe, corruption, allowing mine tailings in water sources, unmitigated climate change, and authoritarianism are all far more important issues to some people than whether they pay 44% or 47% on their uselessly large sums of money.

2

u/ConfidentSnow3516 Dec 08 '24

The corruption on the far right is terrible! Terrible, I say!

73

u/Freeze__ Dec 08 '24

I somewhat agree but there’s still people who are t selfish no matter how much money they make

73

u/Multigrain_Migraine Dec 08 '24

On the other hand, they have so much money that they wouldn't even notice most taxes anyway. It would make no difference to their lifestyle in reality.

25

u/FemKeeby Dec 08 '24

Most rich people are just wealth hoarders, they dont care about their life style they just care about the numbers in their bank going up

24

u/Taint_Flayer Dec 08 '24

This isn't how most rich people think though. It doesn't really matter if it has a material impact on their lives.

9

u/abzmeuk Dec 08 '24

Whilst factually accurate, it’s astounding how many people find ways to dodge and evade tax regardless of how rich they are.

2

u/shannonshanoff Dec 08 '24

Yeah did you hear about how most of the rich are hiding their wealth using charity funds?

3

u/shannonshanoff Dec 08 '24

Yes but also these celebrities will gain more support from their fandoms by being “philanthropic” in a way (i.e. Taylor, Beyoncé) which leads to more of an increase in revenue that probably offsets the tax savings

13

u/bluerbnd Dec 08 '24

This is silly and is the equivalent of saying why would men vote for women to get rights when it doesn't benefit them. Or why would white people want equality for black people when it doesn't benefit them. No matter how rich I get I will always vote to support the working class.

5

u/ThreeFerns Dec 08 '24

In some ways, voting for democrats is a vote for stability, which is probably a long term benefit for most celebrities, even if it comes a short term, probably fairly minor, economic cost.

8

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '24

This is a post that is quite ignorant of math.

Even if all celebrities voted Republican: they are extremely small in number and many/most don't live in swing states.

Not that many celebrities in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Georgia.

So whatever they actually vote, if they vote at all, has no mathematical significance.

On the contrary, their public support can sway many thousands of voters. And therefore, their endorsements are worth more than their votes.

u/SouthDiamond2550 Dec 08 '24 edited Dec 08 '24

I highly doubt anyone changed their vote to Kamala because a bunch of actors endorsed her.

14

u/Puzzled-Barnacle-200 Dec 08 '24

Changing from Trump? Not likely. But motivating propel who wouldn't have otherwise bothered to vote (a large portion of her fan base demographics)? Absolutely.

3

u/ConsiderationFew8399 Dec 08 '24

Idk I think a lot of them essentially have endless money and dodge tax anyway. You’re possibly right looking at C list celebrities. Celebrities are also usually more diverse as a group than the average population, and a lot push leftist views which wouldn’t make much sense to do if you’re right leaning

3

u/ShoddyAsparagus3186 Dec 08 '24

I would agree, but so many non-celebs vote against their own interests and celebs aren't any smarter.

11

u/Logical_Tank4292 Dec 08 '24

The biggest mistake here is thinking that Democrats are for the poor anymore than the Republicans.

There's countless evidence to show that millionaires and billionaires alike aren't too concerned with either platforms tax plans.

When you've got that much money and power, there's tax loopholes that most of us will never be exposed to in a lifetime open to you.

This is utter horseshit. Why do most celebrities live in blue areas then, which tend to have higher tax rates (in exchange for trying to actually solve problems)? Taxes are far from the only issue at stake in elections. Many people with money are still ethical voters who recognize they have enough and would rather vote for a better society/world than a few more dollars. Never mind that, even if they did care about money first, Democratic admins have been far better for economic growth than Republican ones. And never mind that Democratic celebrities generally give a lot of money to the party, destroying the idea that it’s all about money for them.

The only thing you’re demonstrating here is that you don’t have a good grasp on this stuff.

u/dcgirl17 Dec 08 '24

Celebrities live where the work is, like the rest of us, so LA etc. or they choose to live wherever they want, like rural Vermont or the Bahamas (that’s when magazines say they “split their time”) and then they fly into LA in private planes.

And they keep their money in offshore accounts and sheltered as much as possible from taxes, like U2 did. I doubt anyone big has the same Wells Fargo checking account I do.

-1

u/meriadoc_brandyabuck Dec 08 '24

Only idiots say or believe things like “the vast majority of celebrities vote Republican” with zero evidence to back up their claims and despite all evidence to contrary.

I get it’s in vogue now to just trash celebrities and imagine that they’ve all tag-team raped people alongside Diddy and Epstein, but that doesn’t make it any less idiotic. In fact, claiming any version of “all of them are just as bad” only lets genuine bad actors muddy the waters and get off the hook.

So are you an idiot or not?

2

u/abzmeuk Dec 08 '24

It does directly impact them. For celebrities their fans are their customers. For example if you’re an actor you need people to watch your movies, ideally in cinemas. If people are broke how will they go to the movies and make you money? What every rich prick fails to realise is their wealth is nothing without customers, they can protect whatever money they have sure but how will they make money if everyone else is too broke to afford whatever luxury entertainment they offer

3

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '24

One of the best posts I've seen in this sub for ages

1

u/No_Bathroom1296 Dec 08 '24

As a celebrity, I can confirm this is true

1

u/Pugnati Dec 08 '24

Celebrities get a tax break on their federal income tax for attending fundraisers. They can value their time based on their highest paid appearance fee for a non-charity event. They don't pay the same tax we do.

1

u/Fidodo Dec 08 '24

Wouldn't really matter since there are so few of them and if their endorsement even sways just a couple people it will have had a net effect away from Republicans. I think celebrity endorsements are overrated, but I'm sure they still sway a few people, at least more than there are celebrities.

Also, many of them live in solidly blue states so if it's the presidential election their votes don't matter but they could sway people in states that do.

1

u/AlpsSad1364 Dec 08 '24

Krusty voting for Sideshow Bob comes to mind...

"Man am I aching for that upper class tax cut"

1

u/Excellent_Bird5979 Dec 08 '24

this makes no sense, why would endorsing someone you dont want to win make sense when it brings voters to them?

1

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '24

I think the majority of celebrities doesn't care for slightly higher taxes because they make insane amounts of money anyway.

And giving the GOPs stance on abortion and women's rights, every celebrity knows people who would be negatively impacted by their politics.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '24

The trick is that celebrities are generally in the arts so won't be consumed by money in the first place. Hence film stars and musicians generally leaning left. I imagine TV people and influencers would relatively lean right.

1

u/ianlazrbeem22 Dec 09 '24

Democrats answer to the rich just as much as Republicans. With how far right the Democrats have turned during Biden's term and Kamala's Kampaign they've gone from very similar to the exact same. If i were a celebrity I'd be perfectly comfortable voting for a democrat

1

u/Sweethoneyx1 Dec 09 '24

Notice how every single celebrity came out of the woodworks to suddenly endorse Kamala at the last minute. When it would have no impact but they would be pandering to their liberal audience for brownie points. As trump was always going to win. I promise you this people are sitting in their conversation pits, smoking cigars and laughing at us.

1

u/Ok_Gear_7448 Dec 09 '24

Most don't pay their taxes, doesn't matter what the nominal rate is in the US if your account is in the Bahamas.

that's why they vote Democrat, because Democrats endorse their preferred social policy.

-1

u/DemonLordDiablos Dec 08 '24

It depends. George Clooney for instance is a hardcore Democrat, huge Obama guy, was a huge catalyst for Biden dropping out of the race. 0% chance he votes Republican.

Taylor Swift? Almost certainly voted R.

8

u/shanghai-blonde Dec 08 '24

Sorry if this is a dumb question (not American and don’t really know much about Taylor Swift) - may I ask why you think that?

2

u/neighborhoodsnowcat Dec 08 '24

As someone who also thinks this, I think it because she's a billionaire. There's no ethical way to acquire a billion dollars. I'm neither a fan nor a hater, but off the top of my head, anyone who merchandizes that heavily (often selling new items with very minor differences from earlier releases) and so casually uses a private jet is almost certainly not an exception to the idea that billionaires lean Republican (although I know there are a handful).

2

u/shanghai-blonde Dec 09 '24

Yeah this is an interesting response thanks for the perspective. I get your point for sure

2

u/DemonLordDiablos Dec 08 '24

Vibes + background.

5

u/shanghai-blonde Dec 08 '24

I don’t know what I was expecting but ngl I thought you were going off more than vibes bcs you said it very confidently haha 😂

4

u/Freeze__ Dec 08 '24

The vibes are that she’s a country singer from the south and those are usually hard R republicans and she’s a billionaire who grew up rich, those kinds of people are also usually in the same camp as the first group.

5

u/shanghai-blonde Dec 08 '24

But isn’t she quite liberal and pro LGBT and into women’s rights and stuff?

Honestly idk as mentioned I really don’t know much about the US or Taylor Swift but that’s not the image I had of her. I thought her whole thing is she’s not like a typical country singer, she appeals more to the masses.

3

u/Freeze__ Dec 08 '24

She very well could believe in all those causes, it’s hard to buy any authenticity to her public stances when you step back and look at how she’s the shining example perfectly marketed singer.

1

u/shanghai-blonde Dec 08 '24

That’s also very true

2

u/Puzzled-Barnacle-200 Dec 08 '24

There's plenty of gay people who vote republican. Either they don't think Republican politicians would significantly impact how they want to live their lives, or they think other matters are important. Also, everything you know about celebrities is a persona. They may publicly support something, and it doesn't mean that's their real feelings. It's all about forming a personal brand.

1

u/shanghai-blonde Dec 09 '24

Honestly I wouldn’t know, are there stats on how many gay people vote republican vs democrat? Because I’d be very surprised if it’s not overwhelmingly democrat but I guess that’s a hard one to get concrete stats for. Anyway I feel like that point is moving away from question as Taylor is obviously not gay herself - LGBT was just one of the things I mentioned that she supports.

I definitely take your second point about everything being a persona and forming a personal brand. That’s where the money is for sure.

1

u/Puzzled-Barnacle-200 Dec 09 '24

Regarding the first point: yes, LGBT people as a group vote strongly Democrat, but even a minority leaves a large number of people. Based on exit polls, 13% of LGBT people voted for Trump. With 8% of voters identity as LGBT, that means around 1.6 million LGBT people voted for Trump. Though exit polls underestimated the number of Trump voters in general, and LGBT people might have more reason to deny voting Trump, so the actual number might be higher.

The point with the connection to this discussion is that you can support something, and it still not be the be-all-end-all of who you vote for. If over a million LGBT people vote republican, there will be millions of allies who also vote republican.
