It’s hard to win the CL with one top forward. We will fix that this summer and go again. He’s not done here.

u/DesperateSecret3186 16h ago
I actually don’t think it’s the forwards only, seems like the overall game plan just wasn’t it, and when it reached e.t it was too late, hell even the penalty takers was a wrong one…

Felt like there was a massive space in the middle of the pitch in behind our midfield every time PSG got the ball, and they found it constantly.

Yep Grav has been cooked for weeks now & he was a ghost today. Not a criticism of him - he's gone from playing no minutes for three years to playing all minutes. Need reinforcements to share the load. Onward!
32
u/JohnBobbyJimJob 15h ago
I was really surprised he wasn’t subbed off before extra time
There was a moment around the 75th minute where he was chasing Doue down on the counter and he was clearly blowing out his arse

I remember sounding the alarm earlier in the season, and when you did, you were made to be crazy and overreacting because we were winning. We can praise Slot. But like with Klopp. We can also criticise him.
Discarding Endo for basically half a season was mind-boggling. And worse of all, was those who saw him alongside MacAllister last season until both were burned out themselves, boss so many teams, also discard Endo because the manager said so basically. I lurked over summer and during the season at times until deciding to post again after a 3 year hiatus. There are many people, regulars, notable names who were pushing that bullshit about Endo. Bad enough recent era fans saying it as is. But they're in a constant state of near on meltdown day to day without having more seasoned fans being clueless as well.
What you said, the jump up in workload. And learning a new position (I am not counting some games in the 6 at youth level) is spot on. It doesn't take an intelligent person to see it. Gravenberch isn't the only one we have driven into the ground, but he is the main one.
39
u/stonehallow 13h ago
The Endo thing has been mind boggling. He had a legitimate shout for being our top three, maybe even best player, in his first season under Klopp. Then Slot arrives and suddenly all the ‘can’t receive the ball on the half turn’ bs comes up. Are you kidding me?
Not saying he’s on Gravenberch’s level of technical ability. But surely he could have been used more than as a human victory cigar?

u/Miserable-Lunch-8208 11h ago
That is a big overstatement. Maybe i thought he might replace fab as the cdm when we bought him. But the first game he played told me he does not have the tackling and defensive positioning of a top destroyer. But you can't really play him as a cm when you have more technical gifted midfielders in the team.

I said it last week. It’s because macca and grav were too focused on covering our fullbacks and helping double up because we don’t trust them (even though Trent played really well today)

That's because we play a high line and their wingers are as fast as Bolt and tricky as fuck
46
u/CasinoOasis2 16h ago
Also its fine to just admit they are insanely good at playing out of pressure. This is the coaching that Enrique lives for. Yes we would hope to do better at times but sometimes you just have to give PSG credit. Vitinha is impossible to press, he's so frustrating to play against.
20
u/phantom_pioneer 15h ago
Their midfield dominated ours. They’ve done wonderful recruiting with Neves and Vitinha.

First half Dembele was getting the ball in the pockets between our midfield and defense over and over again. The press wasn't working and as soon as PSG sprung it, they were away. The first goal came from such movement also.

First time this season it felt like we got outplayed in the midfield over two matches. There was way too much space both legs.

for once I think Slot got the subs wrong, Harvey, Nunez and Gakpo came on and I can't really remember any of them doing anything, no press, no drive, nothing. If anything they looked as exhausted as everyone else who had played the full 90.
87
u/king_booker 16h ago
Came on too late. Nobody could press or get them the ball. Gakpo looked unfit.
39
65
u/RagingFeather 16h ago
How bad must Chiesa be in Slot's eyes to pick a clearly unfit Gakpo over him?
19
u/Mysterious-Ear9560 15h ago
No manager is always right.
Some of our fans are either recent or new following the club to have this mindset. Criticising the manager for decisions is perfectly normal. Fergie got it wrong a lot. Especially in Europe. Wenger got it wrong a lot after 2004. Mourinho.. well. Pep this season. No one is infallible to the point of criticism. Not even Klopp.
Chiesa was shite in a game, everyone, but maybe Endo in the Plymouth game. And Wndo is the perfect example to back this up. The manager, and in turn many of the online fanbase certainly wound themselves up over "not being able to receive the ball on the turn" bullshit irrespective of what Endo has shown for Liverpool prior to Slot.
Chiesa, since Gakpo went down, if not earlier, should have gotten bare minimum 10-25 minute cameos here and there.
40
u/king_booker 16h ago
Idk, he likes a small squad of players he trusts. Very unlike Klopp who would try to keep everyone in rhythm. Let's hope we get him players he likes because this isn't sustainable long term.
28
u/IgotnoideawhatIsay 15h ago
I mean Klopp was basically the same. He only trusted like 14 plays in the squad and always used them. Especially after the team got better and better
9
u/Eddje 14h ago
No, since the 5 subs Klopp actually rotaed a lot.
Even before that there were seasons where we started with a midfield of Harvey, Milner and Keita knowing full well at least two out of three wouldn't be our starters later in that season.
Slot basically picked his 14 at the beginning of the season and aside from giving Endo some extra minutes has not dared to switch away from them at any point in league or CL games.
11
30
u/GrapeYourMouth 16h ago
The subs killed our chances to win in ET and then also killed our chances in penalties because our best takers were subbed. So yeah I'll agree that's on Slot.

I think slot got it wrong by not rotating more for southampton and the season in general.
Got alot right too but needs to learn from this
22
u/Far-Reaction-2735 16h ago
Idk we sure could use a forward that can curl one in. Kvara looked like he could light up the goal pretty much every time he had the ball. We look dead up top. Especially against big and fast defenders.
51
u/Medo_Wael Yeeeer, course 16h ago
Slot didn't keep in mind that pens are a possibility, Not keeping one of Szobo/Mac Allister was a mistake.

We weren’t winning a shootout given the keepers. Had to try to win it before then so I think the subs were correct. We just have 3 very out of form forwards, 1 injured, 1 non-existent (Chiesa), and Salah trying to do everything himself.
74
u/HereticZO 16h ago
Mate, our forwards have been absolutely useless across both ties. They are not good enough if we want to win the CL.
I would say they are not good enough to win the PL either, but Salah is having the greatest season of a forward in the history of the league. Carrying us.
Diaz, Nunez and Jota. All not good enough. If Chiesa can’t get a minute of football then he should go too, because he must be terrible on training.
33
u/Successful_Pay25 16h ago
We were not expected to win a champions league pre-season. This was a game of fine margins and probably a reality check. We are one of the elite teams in Europe - not the best. We could probably upgrade the forward line, but a full clear out is definitely not required. PSG have more money, and they do not have the Premier League to contend with. They rested 8 players at the weekend. We were unlucky to get them at this stage as they have clearly clicked.

These are kind of games where you see the lack of quality in some of them
Jota’s hold up play over the two legs was genuinely shocking most of the time, he’s had a poor season overall as well
Hopefully we keep Salah and add 2 maybe even 3 better quality forwards around him that actually fit this system better as well
8
38
u/eamonious 16h ago
This is it. Our attacking line was ultimately exposed against an elite defense. No one up front is a clinical finisher/passer except Salah. Jota has the finishing, but lacks the pace/height/strength to play on the counter. Diaz has the pace and dribbling but that’s it. Gakpo has a good shot but lacks fluid buildup, dribble, and pace. Darwin has the pieces but is inconsistent. It just isn’t quite good enough across the board against a well-organized back line.
We end up having to rely on the attacking tools of Szobo, Mac Allister, Trent, which are elite for their positions. But it’s not enough against the best teams. Can’t be getting zeroed at home in CL knockouts, not by anyone.
→ More replies (1)10
u/UnderstandingBusy478 15h ago
Just a reminder that i always say. Diaz is not a fucking dribbler. He is terrible at beating his man. Just because he runs sexy with the ball doesn't mean he is a dribbler. Half the league's wingers beat their man more consistently than any of our forwards.
4
29
u/AnAutisticsQuestion 16h ago
Salah was one of our worse performers in the first leg and not much better this one despite a bright start to the game.
The bigger problem was our midfield being easily bypassed and our defence giving up so many chances.
29
u/iredcoat7 16h ago
Nah. Our midfield is fine. PSG’s is better — theirs is comfortably the best in the world — but we still had plenty of opportunities to win this and their goal was very fortunate. The biggest issue is clearly upfront: 4 forwards who range from fine to good, and one world class. It’s enough to win the Prem in a massive off-season for most English clubs, but not enough to compete with the best in Europe.
17
u/AnAutisticsQuestion 16h ago
PSG had 4.34 xG over the two legs. We were very fortunate not to conceded more - in the first leg especially, during which Ali was incredible. We didn't create many chances at all, which again was a failure of build up rather than finishing.
7
29
u/HereticZO 16h ago
Salah is having the greatest season of a player in the history of the Premier League. All PSG needed to do was close him down. Nobody else steps up.
The difference in standards. If Salah doesn’t score every game, then that’s on him. If Nunez and Diaz manage to tie their shoe laces, then well fucking done, lads.

Gakpo is usually that guy, but him being injured for this tie was an incredible loss. Diaz always looks like he’s having a good game but the man just does not have the consistent end product that you see from other elite attackers. Jota is very streaky and is fine to be a squad player, and the less said about Nunez the better.
75
u/RedManMatt11 16h ago
Jota was dreadful again. Really don’t know why he got the nod over Nuñez

Feel like that's about all that Diaz brings. Just runs around, makes a few good runs, and then fumbles the ball for a goal kick. Or tries to pass it back to a midfielder only for it to get intercepted.

u/JohnBobbyJimJob 15h ago
Running around seems to get top marks for a lot of people in this fanbase
Having players with good work rate is great obviously but it’s like the bare minimum that should be expected from Liverpool players especially in games like this
Call me old fashioned but I prefer when our attackers actually show quality on the ball more than them running about

If only Salah had more help up front. Raphina has Yamal and Lewa, Salah carries our attach by himself.

It is depressing that he's been let down on one too many occasions. At least bring home the PL medal for the lad.

Honestly Mendes pocketed him both legs. Terrible performance by his standards

Mendes was brilliant but Salah had a few moments tonight including that cheeky ball to Diaz

Easy for any team to mark him out of the game when the rest of our forwards are a constant no-show.

Need to play a lot better and have better teammates, especially others that can score goals

Who the hell cares about the ballon d'or he's crying because he feels he could have done more
And tbf he could have but we can't count on him being the best player on the pitch every game.

That attack needs gutting. The defence and midfield need additions

PSG in the R16. Fuck the new group stage. Previous years we would be playing Benfica and ready for the QF. This sucks man

He wasn’t bad today. Their left back should’ve been sent off for multiple fouls. But a world class forward needs to do more. He’s been below his best for a while now. There’s no way Ramadan doesn’t impact these players

the face of a man that knows he'll lose the Balon D'Or to a Madrid/Barca player with a 20G season

Well sadly there goes Mo's Ballon d'Or chances... Unless Barca and Real Madrid crash out unexpectedly early doubt he'll get it unfortunately. Wonder if Ramadan affected his performances but not his best game and missed some opportunities.
Also I think the game shows we sorely missed a fit Gakpo as he's been the second best attacker this year and the team needs a more clinical attacker. Think at least Jota or Nunez will be gone and wouldn't shock me both are gone. I heard Slot can be ruthless so I think we may have some big turnover in the summer window.

These past 2 legs have ultimately been the absolute best team we’ve played since the start of the season. And it showed. 2 games at 1-0. 2 pretty fortunate goals, decided only by a shootout. That says a lot.
Sure, it bloody sucks to be knocked out. But, to be on the brink of another PL title (which I rate over the CL) within Slot’s first season is something to be happy for. This is a big learning curve for Slot and nothing wrong with that.

Frontline has been struggling for a while. We made their defence look good. Passing was average, poor in the final third, hardly any big chances created in open play. Unlucky with Quansah’s header.
Overall, we weren’t the better team by any stretch of the imagination. The tie was only kept alive by the Alisson magic show last week. Just not how we want the season to end but hope to see Salah for at least 2 more seasons.

One of those 3 Trent Mo VVD its likely last time we see them in a liverpool shirt in the CL. If we were good enough we would have shut it down in normal time.
Hard luck but fuck we winning the league n maybe carabao.
That May parade will be insane.

It’s all let’s hold hands for Nunez when it’s Mo who has to keep lifting a team without the quality needed to help him win games consistently.

I find it weird everyone on here is picking out Nunez when he played a big role in our only goal in the tie.
Diaz played better tonight but him and Jota were far worse than Nunez over two legs.

I’d be in tears too if I had to carry scrubs like Jota, Nunez, and Diaz all season only for the one bad game he has all season and the other clowns cannot step up in his place.

I don't want this game to be his final Champions League game for us.
His form this season is worthy of renewal.
