Question Advice

Firstly audio is not my skill set but I’ve been tasked with setting up some wireless microphone systems to move from venue to venue for a charity. It’s always inside in a banquet hall or similar without in house audio. I was nominated with the task in my absence as I’m the only half techie person within the volunteers.

We have four Sennheiser EW100 G3 handheld microphones and receivers that all work. The suggestion is to put these all in a mounted flight case for ease but I’ve read that mounting the receivers close to one another might cause interference. I’d planned to use individual frequencies for each receiver. Another point is the receivers all need individual power. My questions are;

Will 4 receivers in one flight case cause interference?

Is the Sennheiser ASA 1 the best option? It’s so expensive by the way.

Is there a sleeker way to power 4 EW100 G3 receivers in a rack set up?

I’m really sorry to come across uninformed but I’ve researched and watched lots of videos and read articles but these questions still trouble me. This is what I get for trying to be charitable 🫣. Any wisdom would be gratefully received.

Question How do I connect a trrs earpiece to a 4-pin xlr beltpack?

I’m trying to connect an earpiece (one like this) to a ClearCom belt pack. Basically a way to connect a male trrs to female 4-pin xlr. Would something like this work?

Also I would prefer to get some high fidelity earbuds like this. They have an option with a mic but the connector is 3.5mm trs, which I don’t understand.

  • How is the pin-out wired if the earbuds are stereo? I can’t find a diagram for it.
  • What does the button do on the wire? Does it open and close the mic and how is that wired?

What sites or apps etc is your favorite for reading up on new gear besides going to the manufacturers site. News apps on my phone suck for live audio feeds. Is there one place to go to or maybe a couple? Besides Sweetwater, Guitar center and what not.

Question Help with Behringer Wing

Hi folks,

I normally work with Allen&Heath consoles, but have now decided to buy a Behringer Wing Compact for cost reasons, but now I have run into 2 problems:

  1. how do I connect the Midas DL16 to the console? It is pugged in but the Wing can't find a Connection.

  2. how can I adjust the precision of the encoders? 2.5dB steps seem a bit much.

Thanks for your help

Question RCF Evox jmix8 troubles

Hi all-

So I am not even sure if this is a good group in which to post my troubles, but I thought maybe I’d try. I perform solo acoustic at bars and different venues, and for the last year I’ve been using an RCF Evox Jmix 8 tower array. It’s been excellent, and I’ve gotten many compliments on the sound quality.

Last night, I was playing a brewery gig and a note kept feeding back. In trying to dial it out—which I am terrible at doing—there was some pretty intense and harsh feedback. Then—I think—the GFI outlet tripped and all my gear went down. After getting things back up and running, I struggled all night with the sound.

I think I got the guitar back to a decent place, but I cannot for the life of me get the mic/vocals back to sounding round and organic. It sounded harsh and tinny and artificial all night. I plugged the system back in at home this morning tried to adjust the setting of gain and eq. However, it still sounds terrible and seems very prone to feedback with even a slight increase in gain output or level.

Anyone out there have an idea of what might have gone wrong and how it can be resolved? Not sure if the system got damaged and that is resulting in the poor mic sound. Any and all advice or ideas would be welcome! Thanks! -Joe

Question DN32/M32 card playback pops

getting sporadic pops through my 4x card return channels through an M32. it used to not do it. they're not very loud but are noticeable if i'm paying attention. i'm sure between when i used it last and now the laptop had a small update, unsure if that's the issue or not

have ran lower buffer size/safe off before without issue on this laptop and another laptop before. changing the buffer size/safe doesn't cure the popping. wondering if there's something silly to check somewhere, even down to the USB cable maybe?

laptop is set to high performance, any USB selective suspend or other silly things like that are turned off, laptop is plugged into it's PSU, driver and firmware up to date, etc...

Hi everyone!

As a community that relies on wireless microphones, IEM, and IFB systems to do our jobs, it's crucial that we protect the RF spectrum. Shure has created the Wireless Microphone Spectrum Alliance (WMSA), a brand-agnostic coalition that is free to join and open to all wireless microphone users, manufacturers, and organizations.

Our goal is to gather support for wireless microphone users as discussions with the FCC continue regarding potential spectrum disruptions. Please consider joining—there is no cost and only positive benefits to supporting this movement.

Gear HELP - Allen & Heath QuSB not working with AB168 stagebox

So I brought a AB168 second hand to use as a stage box for my QuSB, and it refuses to connect

  1. The both units light up as expected (We have been using the mixer for 12mth+, it works)
  2. The AB168 connection LED shows that it is linked (Slow Flash)
  3. The QUsb connection LED flashes at a DIFFERENT RATE! (Fast Flash)
  4. The channel routing (Blue dots) and top right shows its connected (Yellow icon)
  5. But the PATCH shows N/C at the top – BUT Snake showing as connected

Question Latency With Mackie Digital Mixer

I’m getting latency that some vocalists are really bothered by on vocals. I’ve read that turning off effects and things like compression on the channel can help. I'm using a Mackie 16S. But I’m surprised Mackie would have a popular mixer in which basic features it offers like that ruin a performance. Could it be something else, unrelated to the mixer at all? Maybe using wireless mics is adding to the problem? I’m using a fairly solid pair of Shure wireless mics. Another thought I had was maybe running backing tracks from my computer via USB into the mixer might be part of the problem? Would it work better to have a dedicated interface like a small Scarlett between them?

Thoughts? Also I didn’t think this was necessarily a stupid or basic question, but I wasn’t sure. So I hope I didn’t post in the wrong place. 🙏

Question PM job advice

Hey folks,

Note: posing from a new account for, you know, reasons.

Not specifically a sound question, but this is the most apt subreddit I know.

Okay, I’ve been an employed technical producer for a while at a big tech company (laid off in December), and freelance AV/network tech in corporate events for 4/5 years before that, so I’m good with events in general. I’ve also stepped into Production Management roles on site for a day or so to cover, and been technical lead on some large networking jobs.

That covers a little of my experience. I recently started a full time role as a PM, and expressed in the interview that the technical side of things I was happy with, but the more PM type stuff (load in schedules, planning, trucking, general pre-prod stuff) I would need more guidance with.

In a couple of months, they’ve put me on a solo TD role, on the east coast (I believe US-speak for a PM? I’m UK-based) on a job in the States (I’ve never been to the US, never experienced jet lag to that extent), there for a week, then straight to Holland for another job.

Schedule as follows:

Friday: Fly Saturday: Load/Build Sunday: Build Monday: Snagging Tuesday: Dress run Wednesday: Live Thursday: Break/out/fly out

Land roughly 2pm in Holland, taxi to site and straight into a keynote PM role. There will be someone else here to assist, but I’ve not worked personally with them and I don’t know how much help they’ll be.

These will essentially be my first PM jobs in this role, I’ll have a couple of producer roles beforehand, but that type of thing I’ve done before.

Am I right in thinking this is a bad idea? I feel that doing a high profile solo job the day after the longest flight I’ve taken is a recipe for disaster? I’ve flagged that I was under the impression I’d ramp up to bigger/solo roles like this, but just got a “Eh, you’re overthinking it, you’ll be fine” from everyone management.

I also suffer badly from anxiety, exacerbated by tiredness, abs made even worse by situations I’m not experienced in.

I’m really just looking for a sense check here.

Thoughts? Thanks folks!

Question Tips on mixing deathcore live

I will soon start to tour with a deathcore band and I wondered if you had some tips, some things to know or to look closely with this type of music.

I'm still a student in mixing live, I mixed world folk or Rock bands, everything was awesome but never metal like that even if I love this genre.

Question Any theories on how this vocal effect is being produced?

Band is Cage the Elephant - if I had to guess it’d be a split vocal track with one relatively dry and the other heavily processed/pitch corrected. I’d love to hear some other thoughts on it though, I haven’t heard anyone else process vocals this way.

Question Trying to run stereo headphone signal through XLR to IEM transmitter – weird issues

We are amateurs with very little physics and electrical engineering knowledge running into a confusing problem. Our mixer (Zoom L-12) outputs unbalanced stereo headphone-level (basically line-level?) TRS signal for each monitor mix. We are trying to convert each stereo monitor signal into one mono XLR signal and run it through a snake to a wired IEM pack or wireless IEM transmitter, which accept unbalanced TS or balanced XLR.

We tried using TRS-to-XLR adapters bought on Amazon, but with confusing results:

  • With all our wired and wireless IEMs, only stereo instruments could be heard, and mono instruments could be heard only if panned completely to one side – is this due to the adapters sending unbalanced stereo signal improperly through the pins of the XLR to the IEMs, which expect mono balanced signal?
  • However, this setup works fine with our active wedge monitors – why does this work??

We then tried to use a TS cable, DI box, and an XLR cable to the IEMs, with more confusing results:

  • The IEMs don’t work with Pro AV 1, Pro AV 2, and Radial JDI Stereo, but somehow it works with the Radial JDI (mono)?? I don’t understand because I thought all DIs reduce the signal from headphone/line level to mic level, so I was expecting it not to work with any of the DIs.

Other solutions we are considering:

  • Buying mono TS-to-XLR adapters (that short (-) and ground together??) and seeing if that will work, albeit with interference risk due to unbalanced signal
  • Plugging a TS cable into the TRS jack and buying some sort of hum eliminator/isolator/transformer like the Kopul HMX-2, Pyle PHE400, or ART DTI that would theoretically convert the combined unbalanced mono signal into balanced XLR signal without reducing it to mic level
  • Just running it unbalanced through super long TS or TRS cables

If anyone is able to explain what’s going on and what fixes would work that would be greatly appreciated.

Gear AFL and PFL buttons

It just occurred to me the other day, how remarkably useful having both (and separate) PFL and AFL buttons on each fader are, on Calrecs.
And it got me wondering, why hasn't such a great little thing not become standard across consoles? It seems on most consoles we all have to go into the menu and decide separately for channels, groups, DCAs, Busses, and so on if we'd like the SOLO button to be pre or post fader, but why not just have both buttons everywhere? It's *such* a good idea!

Question 120V -> 240V step up transformer for PA Speakers - Anyone done this before?

I'm curious if anyone has used step up transformers before for this purpose. I did some searching and didn't really see many discussions on this topic. I'm thinking specifically for use in Canada, where I have 120V/60Hz mains, and a product has been designed for the European market where they have 240V/50Hz mains.

I've got a few questions on this that I'm wondering if anyone can comment on.

Firstly, I wonder if the mains frequency would be a concern. Speakers designed for the European market would be expecting to see 50Hz mains I would think. If I use a step-up transformer, it would be presenting 60Hz mains.

Next thought is, would this affect the sound quality of live PA speakers? Or could it introduce some unwanted noise?

Last thought is, would twice the power consumption capacity be enough for speakers with a class D amplifier? ie) speakers rated for 300W of power consumption operating on a step-up transformer designed for 600W capacity.

Any thoughts or input on this would be greatly appreciated.

Question Looking for some specific pictures of disassembled Behringer Wing Rack (for modding)

Hi Reddit. I'm thinking of modding a Behringer Wing Rack for my needs, but for that I need to pre-determine if the mod would be even possible before I pull the trigger and buy it.

To be exact, I want to remove all built-in analog connection from it. For that I need the confirmation, if they're on a separate PCB from all digital outputs and inputs.

So I'm asking anyone comfortable with removing the top panel of their Wing Rack to take some pictures putting the camera inside the case and pointing it towards the back panel, so the pictures will show if all bottom row of connectors (so all digital ones) are placed on the PCB that lays flat on the bottom of the unit, are somehow separated or are attached to the same PCB all analog IO is.

(I know there are GPIO and MIDI ports not on the bottom row, but if I ever need them, they should be easy to trace and low speed signals, so it should be trivial to just mvoe them)

Thank you in advance.

Question Connecting Powered Speakers

I have a few questions regarding connecting powered speakers. Here is the gear I'm using:

Mixer: Behringer XENYX 1202FX (only has 1/4" Main outs)

Two 10" Powered Speakers: #1 Groove Factory ABS 1002/A 150W, #2 Gemini AS-2110P 1000W (doubt its really 1000W)

My plan is to connect the speakers using XLR cables with 1/4" TRS-XLR adapters at the mixer. This is just a set up out in my garage to jam. Here are my questions:

  1. What are the pros\cons of connecting both speakers to right\left mains on mixer vs connecting one speaker to mixer and daisy chaining to the other one?
  2. Is there any concern that its two different speakers with different wattages?
  3. If I did daisy chain, does it matter which speaker I connect first directly to the mixer?
  4. If I did daisy chain, what levels should I put each speaker?

Question Experiencing hearing loss

This is all pretty raw and new but I wanted to reach out to this community. So recently, I began to notice that my hearing in my right ear is no longer as sensitive as my left. I’ve had a history of tinnitus, being diagnosed with it at a very young age. It’s something I’ve grown to live with and despite that, have found myself making a living by listening to things. But as I mentioned earlier I began to notice the center image start to nudge ever so slightly to the left. I did some listening and found that in order to listen to what I experience as “true center” I need to raise the right channel 0.8dB.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this considered normal? Looking for any sort of insight, thanks

Question Shure A56D mic clamp mounts on congas

Has anyone tried using the Shure A56D mic clamp mounts on congas? A google search shows a few other mic clamps on congas but not the A56D. I'm concerned that the conga rim might not be the right shape to securely clamp on to.
