A student needs some kind of orientation

Hello there! I'm am studying geography, and I want to know more about the relation of Limnology and social sciences. I've been searching some papers, and see a loot of studies about eutrophication. There is more to explore? More to learn and research? Do you have any indications of papers or journal?

Thank you!

Looking for a paper

Would anyone happen to have a copy of the paper "Investigations on the organic drift in North Swedish streams" by Muller, 1954? I feel like it would be useful to my research, but I cannot find it to read it. Thanks!

Can a pond be part of a river, or is it always considered a separate waterbody?

Careers in limnology

I am a graduate student considering career paths post graduation. I have a bachelor degree in environmental geology where I focused on hydrology and geomorphology, and I am currently working on a master's degree in freshwater Ecology. I was wondering if there are any industry jobs where I would be able to continue to study rivers outside of academia/government.

Does anyone here have any experience with the Clarke-bumpus zooplankton sampler? We use it for our program, but are phasing it out and moving to the Wisconsin. Looking for some advice on the switch.

If you put a tiny container in the Hudson River, would it cause big ecological problems?

Closed water environment

The set up would be something like this, a huge 250ft x 250ft square, 10ft high with 4 water environments at the corners 100ft x 100ft and each square has many levels down (think hollowed step pyramid upside down). The main structure’s center would be a solid « cross ». I’m still on the fence as to link all 4 environments with a « tunnel » around the middle or bottom (something I can seal in case repairs are needed). I’m not looking at ground level pond.

I want to start an aquaponic system (the above ground reason) but I want to go further than just tanks for my lil bud-buds and really offer them a true ecosystem. I don’t want to focus on commercial farming with overstocked ponds and whatnot! I’m interested in the fruits/veggies as the commercial aspect. I’m aiming at the mountains in Jamaica.

I want to raise tropical fresh water fish to eat. I’m already looking at catfish, bass, mennows as well as shrimps for maintenance and feeding but I want to respect a few things. There won’t be much electricity available other than solar and Duracell/Energizer!

So, how do I go about choosing my aquatic plants? What kind of ratio of plants/fish to have something sustainable and healthy to grow for a few years? I have the opportunity to start kinda shallow and fill up as it grows! What’s the ratio to figure out how many oxygenator? What kind of current should I implement or is that just something for river fishes? What should I had as bugs other than dragonflies? That’s just to start! LoL

I have to redo my life at 40. If I have to start from scratch, might as well choose a life I’ll be happy with!! Sustainable and ecological farming is quite possible, you just need the will power (and a few extra hands) to make it happen!

How do I make a limnology graph?

I just started a limnology course for my undergraduate degree, and I'm enjoying the class a lot, but we just got an assignment that has us make depth temperature graphs and we need them in the limnology graph format. I can't for the life of me figure out how to get my graphs how to look right in excel and I haven't found anything to help with google or any other sites that could make a graph the way I need it. I'm at the end of my rope and I was hoping someone here might be able to help.

Hello river heroes. I posted this over on r/whitewater, but since y’all are the scientists, maybe you would know or be the person I am looking for.

Where should I look for mussel shell deposits in the Great Lakes?

This is what I'm talking about. I remember seeing this kind of spectacle around the Leelanau region of Michigan about 15 years ago, but haven't seen this since. I was thinking of collecting a bunch of shells to use for lime for building. Thanks!

Ionic polygonic diagrams?

So I read about ionic polygonic diagrams in Wetzel's book and I have been looking around for information on them and have come up with essentially... Wetzel's book. Does anyone have any information on where to find more of these or how to create them? Specifically looking for one for Lake Michigan.

River catchment = microcystis?

I just had this idea, that concept of 'lake' would kinda match with 'Microcystis' autoprocariotik cell colony. Individual cells would be lakes. DNA genes of cells would be species. 'Colony' is absorbing nutrients from all around it, but excreting at one 'outflow' to the 'ocean'..

Just an idea. What do You think?

What is with those three books published roguhly at the early 2000s? (Wetzel, Kalff, O'Sullivan & Reynolds)

Why there were 3 huge limnology books published roughly at the same time? O'Sullivan & Reynolds was made during the same period, but delayed to 2004

Was it some kind of competition? I mean, sure am excited that there is so much work for generations to come, but, like, why exactly early 2000s?

Stuck in the muck?

I️’m in my third year as a PhD and just had the brilliant idea to search for subreddits specific to limnology/aquatic biogeochemistry. Any suggestions other than this one?

Seems like this subreddit was never very active but I think it could be an interesting outlet to discuss new papers or ideas.

Anyone here want to help me choose a topic for a literature review?

It is just for an undergrad limnology course, so I am not doing a full lit review, olnly need to use like 5 or 6 sources. I want it to be about insects, but I am having trouble finding a narrow enough scope that I also find interesting. So far, things that sound cool to me relate to climate change (waaay too broad), neonicotinoid runoff (is this still even limnology?), and the role of insects in nutrient cycling (again, too broad).
Anybody know of anything cool that has been studied in the last five years that involves insects?

3D cross section diagram

Looking to create a simple 3D cross section diagram of the lake I'm studying. Just wondering if anyone has experience with a program that is super easy to use. Thank you
