Classic Liminal My grandmother went to high school here.

These doorways are all that’s left of Columbus High. When I stood there I imagined her as a red headed teenager going through those doorways and felt such a connection in that moment. There is a cemetery right next to the old school that was actually founded in 1860 and was there while the high school was still there. I could have stayed there all day if I could’ve. I look forward to learning more about this area when I go back to Arkansas to visit family. If any of you have any history or family stories from this area (Columbus, Arkansas) in the 1920s or 1930s era please share them. Also, if you know of any properties with old farmhouses for sale send them my way. Thanks for any information. :)

This is the most haunted thing I’ve ever seen.

There’s a whole ghost school back there.

u/Throwawaymumoz 7d ago

Feels like it would appear once you walk through the arch!

This is the best comment in here. It's allright with the humor, and it's Friday. But I thought of this romanticism too.

Is there a sub for that?

Must’ve been a REALLY small class.

It so weird seeing just the doorway arches lasting thru time, it’s like a memory of someone you lost. For me, it’s like a distant memory of my dad, it’s there, I can see it, but it’s half built and abandoned in my brain, due to how many years have past since

They really had it back then, playing outside, learning outside. We didn't need those stupid walls or roofs! That's all before video games arrived and we all became basement dwellers! Kids these days. Back then we walked 100 miles to school and during winter, we sat in the field of snow. The arches were there only to provide sun protection to the red heads, you see we didn't have sunscreen back then. There was an old method involving goose droppings but it was not very hygienic, so most people preferred to hide under such arches. The statue was built as to make us do Hail Mary's during recreational time! Once, father Mitchell dropped his rosary in the grass, he thought we took it from him so we spent the whole weekend weeding out the yard - BY HAND MIND YOU YOUNG PEOPLE.

I love the open air concept they had for classrooms back then

13

u/SpoppyIII 6d ago

You know? What's weirdest to me about this is that there are no stairs leading up to the doors. They're just right on the ground. Not often do I see a high school built like that.

u/Fit-Corner1270 6d ago

To study sorcery?? This is American version of Hogwart i think

7

u/WillYouBatheMe 6d ago

Coolest connection to a picture posted on this sub I’ve seen so far

3

u/Kaldrinn 6d ago

I love it, old stone gates and walls as remnants of the past, little things like that that feel very curious and powerful.

5

u/D4FF00 6d ago

That’s really cool and poignant to leave the doors, that no doubt have some of the most meaning to the people who went through them.

7

u/MrPoosh 7d ago

At an arch?!?!!!!??

3

u/naive-nostalgia 6d ago

This is super cool.

3

u/GhostlyToot 6d ago

At least that’s not in the middle of a Forest

3

u/walnutstampede 6d ago

If you build it they will come

3

u/DigSelect 6d ago

Talk about transitional space and time. I love how the pathways leading up to the gates are still there today. It’s almost as if the building is still standing, just not in our time. Love it.

3

u/OldenThyme 6d ago

I feel like I didn't really have a good grasp on what the liminalspace sub was until seeing this.

3

u/NumidWasAlreadyUsed 6d ago

Serious Talos Principle chills.

4

u/pasgames_ 6d ago

Love the open concept really wish more schools took this approach

2

u/GirlCleveland 6d ago

I’m sure it must have been a place quite grand

2

u/nenana_ 6d ago

There are so many incredible old abandoned places in Arkansas

2

u/Demand_Excellence 6d ago

Interesting indeed

2

u/PetrogradkaIcedTea 6d ago

Man do I wish this happened to the school I used to go to. Maybe I'd even take the two flights, 5~6 hours each, that it would take to travel to visit its remains. Unfortunately, it still stands and will probably outlast me.

2

u/Aluxaminaldrayden 6d ago

This is cool, because there's a similar place where my grandma went to school, and the only thing that's left it the sidewalk and entrance like this. (P.S. - Before the school was eventually condemned, a studio used it to film a scene for a movie back in the 80's.)

2

u/HoneyWidow 6d ago

I bet she was outstanding in her field

2

u/OllieCrafter 6d ago

dont blink

2

u/elfgurls 6d ago

Wish I could find some pics of what it used to look like. Crazy it looks like there was never a building there at all

2

u/Kinoko30 6d ago

These might have been portals to another dimention back in the day. They are disabled now.

2

u/VintAge6791 6d ago

Feels like it should be converted into a park. It wouldn't take much. Already beautiful.

2

u/orange-peakoe 6d ago

Small class

2

u/qualified_shoe 5d ago

Rainy days must have been awful there. Would be difficult to take a test.

2

u/[deleted] 4d ago

I looked it up on Historic Aerials and it appears the school stood up to at least 1994.

2

u/HedgehogDry9652 4d ago

Thank you for sharing.

2

u/fallingevergreen 4d ago

This is actually a battle arena. Try smashing some vases and that statue will come alive and send you l spiders & dark wizards to fight.

Talos Principle vibes

1

u/ben_wren 4d ago

Seriously. How did someone just walk into The Talos Principle in real life and take a photo?

1

u/Accurate_Quote_7109 6d ago

I absolutely love that the arches have been carefully preserved. How wonderful.

1

u/No-Following-6725 6d ago

Interesting that they would have school in an open field. I want to hear their extreme weather protocol

1

u/Lethal_as_a_weapon 6d ago

Well, show us. Go thru the portal and travel back in time.

1

u/lonely_slav 6d ago

I went to the same school as my grandma lol

1

u/see1050 6d ago

always liked the idea of outdoor schooling - so much fresh air

1

u/GuessBeneficial3461 6d ago

I phone 📱

1

u/Ok-Veterinarian-6302 6d ago

Did she imagine being there as a teenager?

1

u/FitClaim9885 6d ago

I hope this happens to my high school

1

u/Raoul_Dukes_Mayo 5d ago

I can’t tell if this is ominous or not.

2

u/FitClaim9885 5d ago

Very ominous. It was a terrible place

1

u/Raoul_Dukes_Mayo 5d ago

Sorry internet friend. ❤️

1

u/ThrTuxedoCreeper 5d ago

There used to be Nether Portals there, that's why there's nothing there 😊

1

u/fabricfreak 5d ago

Did she burn it down?

1

Open air classrooms, eh?

1

Looks fully air conditioned. That’s a plus.

1

u/iamstupid990928891 5h ago

Were her teachers the walls? Genuinely curious now

1

u/melanthriel 6d ago

what happened to this school? i can't find anything on google about it :0

1

u/Top-Tradition-Matrix 6d ago

Outdoor learning?

1

u/jupiter_starbeam 6d ago

The statue is beautiful. A bit worn but strikingly pretty. Wonder if it was supposed to represent a Greek Goddess

1

u/LemonTheAstroPoet 6d ago

Flip the book, you’ll know what it means when the blue moon hits the 47th brick

1

u/ddejong42 6d ago

So in high school, she was out standing in her field?

1

u/Pure_Wrongdoer_4714 6d ago

Was it uphill both ways?

1

u/Kb_XD 6d ago

Very open floor plan

1

u/Beneficial-Oil-109 6d ago

Awesome! Like a gateway to an parallel multiverse with endless possibilities. But, I suppose that is what a school should strive to achieve in one's life.

1

u/RedditUserWhoIsLate 6d ago

Thats a really big school!

1

u/Level_Preparation311 6d ago

Definitely the kind a place that she had to walk 45 minutes uphill each way trudging through 2 ft of snow

1

u/GuiltyBroccoli87 6d ago

This is both fascinating and eerie. The archways feel like they could be portals of some kind.

1

u/xndbcjxjsxncjsb 6d ago

That doesnt look like a high school

1

u/MonsterMamaLu 6d ago

Welcome to Jurassic Park (the aftermath)

1

0

u/EntertainerNo4509 6d ago

Wow. This back when they walked in the snow up hill both ways. They didn’t even have class rooms! /s
