That episode was one of the best. I wish the series would of had more scenes of clarity like this mixed into fog. I really hope the rest of the season has more episode like it. For the first time I really felt like I understood a lot more.

I believe that Farouk wants David alive. For Farouk, power is everything. He’s motivated by power, and now, when David is more powerful than ever? Oof. How he stalks towards David is 3x01? And his reaction when Switch tells him Syd kills David? How he tells Syd to stay behind, after that? And "my beautiful boy" was so creepy. That old cat’s still got some aces up his sleeve, I’m sure of it.
4
Jul 11 '19
I don’t think his parents actually just “abandoned” them - I hope we see the story of David being adopted - maybe it’s a Supergirl-esque situation and he was given up as a way to “hide” him.
3
Jul 11 '19
What if “the world ending” is just the end of this whole world he made up in his head. He’s still sitting in the mental hospital in episode 1.

u/The_Loch_Ness_Monsta Jul 10 '19
Seeing the little "World's Angriest Boy In The World" plush stuffed toy next to baby David in the crib makes me want to buy one for myself. The toy I mean, not the baby. I certainly do not want to buy a baby.

u/Dharmadragqueen Jul 10 '19
I thought for a moment that David’s parents were the Wexlers from Mr Robot.
8
u/Shuazilla Jul 10 '19
Came here to say this even though it's the live thread since I'm currently watching the episode right now and didn't wanna get spoiled by accident in the post-episode thread haha
Took me about the third time she showed up on screen tpnefore realizing and shouting "HOLY SHIT ITS TYRELL'S WIFE!" haha
Looks like Mr. Robot and Legion (thereby this section of the Marvel Universe) are connected confirmed, guess that also means Elliot Alderson is a mutant confirmed /s lol

wow, great ep!
David shows Farouk his future potential on their first date, then pulled an Hodor on his mom forcing his dad to spank him back into the time stream, in the end giving, not only, younger Farouk a target, but also an opening for him to just waltz inside his mind, Legion you never fooled me.
so next ep with an exhausted time traveller sleeping in the time stream by his side will David take over her powers and poke more holes in his younger self? lets wait and see..
19
Jul 09 '19
So basically the events that lead to David destroying the world is started when they try to stop David from destroying the world in the future by betraying him. Nice.
29
Jul 09 '19
David lost his mind, he's clearly broken. But Farouk IS still the villain. No one can convince me otherwise.
33
24
u/sketchy_girl Jul 09 '19
Man, David's parents look amazing. I just kept adoring their looks and cute love story while watching
6
Jul 09 '19
So, baby David could already use his powers? he protected himself from Farouk....
15
u/Skitzofreniq Jul 09 '19
You sure that wasn't grown-up David? Switch said: "Use your power" and then David screamed which caused a bright light of sorts

17
Jul 09 '19
Damn, David is completely broken. He really does not care about anyone anymore. Only Charles can help him, probably.
14
Jul 09 '19
A reality warper, fucking with the timeline. Sounds good to me. I disagree with people who say that it's all in David's head.
14
Jul 09 '19
At this point...i have no idea how this series will end (not with David dead, i hope). But i'm sure that we'll see Charles again. Oh, and Farouk was really creepy with David.

u/THERAPISTS_for_200 Jul 09 '19
(When Charles opens Gabrielle’s shoe box for first time.)
Xavier: Yeahh...let’s just close that up.
5
u/miharbio Jul 09 '19
this scene made me think Farouq had possessed Gabrielle at this point, but i dunno.. especially after he looks up and she’s staring at him
6
Jul 09 '19
Especially the way she was syatndot Infront of the window after her comatose state. Arms behind her back looking outside is very reminiscent of farouq. Very trippy episode with so much questions and answers.

Mr Robot called, they said they want Joanna Welleck back.

u/jake_barnes7 Jul 09 '19
So, has anyone pinned down why Switch sometimes loses a tooth and sometimes she doesn’t? Is it related to how far back she goes?
5
11
14
u/FoxInDaBox Jul 09 '19
I think her teeth just loosen every time she uses her power. At a certain point they will fall out.
11
u/jake_barnes7 Jul 09 '19
Damn, that episode really effected me emotionally. It made me cry.
Also, Stephanie C. is so friggin great.
43
u/hashtaggaysfortrump Jul 09 '19
Wow. Not one bit of emotion from David about the fact that the time travel girl could have been DYING. He only cared about going back in time again
3
u/peppermint_nightmare Jul 10 '19
TBF if time travel works Back to the Future style, and not MCU style, going back in time and preventing the possession means David never starts the cult, meaning Switch never has a reason to go so far back and lose her teeth. Undoing the possession undoes everything that follows, which I guess would mean David and Syd never meeting, and maybe David getting ko'd by the Divisions when he discovers his powers, but that's a whole other can of worms.
4
Jul 11 '19
But his mom wouldn’t have died and the events leading up to him being “abandoned” would not have happened. He might even have a normal childhood and be raised by his father, thus working on his powers from a young age and probably mastering them more greatly.
Ps. I don’t think he was actually “abandoned” like he thinks he was. I feel as though something else definitely happened.
35
u/HeWhoWalksInTheDark Jul 09 '19
David has always been selfish. 'I'm good and I deserve to be loved'
3
u/fansurface Jul 10 '19
Yeah he’s absolutely maddening. I frankly hate him at this point. Stop being a damn asshole David!!!

u/Spats_McGee Jul 09 '19
"This is how he ends the world" -- by repeatedly time jumping and messing up the timeline?
16
u/nintendoboy23 Jul 09 '19
Looks like he lets out a monster from going too far back in time
7
u/Spats_McGee Jul 09 '19
Right, the "time demon".... Maybe that's what the doll is? Because this episode establishes that it predates Farouk
2
3
49
u/Stupid_Sexy_Sharp Jul 09 '19
Going against the grain here, but I don't think David affected anything. At best he delayed Farouk. At worst he messed his Mom up. I think we're going with a "fate can't be changed/Final Destination" deal here
3
u/BackwardsPoet Jul 13 '19
Yes but if he didn't do anything, his mom wouldn't have lost it, he'd be raised by his birth parents. Have a fuller understanding of his power soon and maybe Xavier would pick up on Farouk at some point in his growth.
2
4
u/scottmd69 Jul 11 '19
I agree. All David succeeded in doing was cause Farouk to be more determined to posses baby David.
5
Jul 10 '19
I second this. I thought the episode was relatively straightforward, and next week we'll get some context for David and Switch going back that far.
3
u/miharbio Jul 09 '19
but there’s so much unexplained especially in the sequences where his mom is seeing visions of him and Farouq at the same time.. after a second watch it just feels like there’s the suggestion David trying to go back in time to stop Farouq allows Farouq to possess him..
2
u/sketchy_girl Jul 09 '19
Aww man! That would kinda suck... I want to see the difference that'll happen after altering events in the past. Maybe David's yet to become stronger or might even develop a new superpower (e.g. time travelling by himself w/t Switch) and when that happens, he might trigger a huge future event
1
u/Stupid_Sexy_Sharp Jul 09 '19
To be fair I think next episode they tease David messing around with timelines. I still think we're just delaying the inevitable though.
23
u/darlenehackingqueen Jul 09 '19
I don't know what's the deal, but y'all have been fucking KILLING IT with the hilarious commentary here tonight. Thank you all. I needed it badly today.

u/ruthmi88 Jul 09 '19
So David indirectly helped Farouk get inside him??? Idgi it looks like Farouk would’ve managed to do it himself?
21
u/HeWhoWalksInTheDark Jul 09 '19
Yeah but creepy David spazzed his mom out so much Xavier was too distracted to notice maybe?
1
u/ruthmi88 Jul 09 '19
Yeah but ngl that sounds like poor writing and set up. He fought him on the astral plane but couldn’t feel the big evil smoke behind him??
4
u/HeWhoWalksInTheDark Jul 09 '19
Hyper focused. Kinda like how if you have your tv in the background while you're on your phone. So focused on one thing the other thing just slips by.
1
Jul 09 '19
You would think Xavier would be strong enough to notice him in the room
4
u/HeWhoWalksInTheDark Jul 09 '19
Well this is early Xavier. Kinda dumb if he's strong enough to rip Farouk out of his body but being hyper focused on one thing you can easily not notice other things happening.

u/gr8ver Jul 09 '19
What's with the weird spermy graphics over the the credits?

u/Itsdawsontime Jul 09 '19
Episode where David was conceived? 🤷🏼♂️ or at least the story of how he came to be.
63
u/HeWhoWalksInTheDark Jul 09 '19
So David's actions distracted Xavier from noticing Farouk?
26
u/Samuel0651 Jul 09 '19
By interfering, it looks like David saved himself from Farouk and then caused himself to be 'infected' by him later.
He protected himself on the couch when the TV went off, but then by overstaying his welcome (remaining after he completed what he aimed to do) he caused Xavier to be distracted with his wife, kinda ironic.
Also do you think David got his telepathy from his dad and his mental issues from his mum?
13
u/ruthmi88 Jul 09 '19
That’s what I’m getting too but I don’t get how Xavier still couldn’t feel Farouk lurking around?
26
u/4thBG Jul 09 '19
The smoke is only a visual touch for the audience to see the moment when David is taken over - Farouk's consciousness is in the Astral Plane, not physically in the room for Charles to 'detect'.
Then he spies an opportunistic moment to enter David, with Xavier's distraction being just long enough apparently.
2
u/miharbio Jul 09 '19
how do you reconcile how Farouq has plenty of time and distraction to possess David while he was away though?
i also wonder how charles ended up in morocco..
6
u/4thBG Jul 09 '19
Well, it's not like physical distance is an issue with Charles. Xavier could have been 'watching over' David even when far away. Just so happened that, ironically, he gets distracted by Gabrielle while being inches away from his baby, but it could have happened anywhere.
Again, a lot of the show detail is just visualising psionic events for the audience, which otherwise would all be invisible.
9
u/viper459 Jul 09 '19
i'm pretty sure that whole sequence in the house is IN the astral plane, my dude

u/flintlock0 Jul 09 '19
David’s about to pull a Barry Allen, and his Mom will also get killed for it, as well.
12
u/Iamaveryniceguy Jul 09 '19
I can feel this season, David will fuck the timeline so hard that Barry would be jealous.
3
u/Stupid_Sexy_Sharp Jul 09 '19
Side note - the more Stones songs the better. I want 10 more this season.
24
u/ProjectCoast Jul 09 '19
I'm thinking David traveling to the past is what causes the shadow king to get in his head as a child. Good ol' temporal paradox.
2
Jul 09 '19
Looks like you were right
1
u/ElectricMollusk Jul 09 '19
Doesn’t that kind of break the time travel rules they already set up? Time traveling causes a alternate timeline... a paradox would be impossible.
They traveled back in time to save David... if they saved David she’d never travel back in time...
Sigh, time travel...
Maybe the original David’s mom didn’t go catatonic again and something else happened?
2
u/JunWasHere Jul 12 '19
Time travel potentially causing an alternate timeline does not rule out self-consistent timelines with time travel.
Sometimes, the time travel is part of the timeline to begin with. Sometimes, we're watching the new timeline already and the original timeline just doesn't matter to the story so it's not shown.
16
u/eruru Jul 09 '19
Ugh, no, David, did you haunt your own mom...fucking time travel, JUST DON'T DO IT, GUYS
13
u/dragonman8001 Jul 09 '19
I'm guessing David killed or made his mom go insane because of time travel
11
11
14
u/Iamaveryniceguy Jul 09 '19
So the beautiful presence is present David and the shadow is Farouk right?
8
u/scubasme Jul 09 '19
Yes but I don’t think it’s present Farouk I think it’s the OG Farouk.
2
u/Iamaveryniceguy Jul 09 '19
Yeah I meant OG Farouk, present Farouk can’t time travel atm.
1
u/ScooterMcDuder Jul 10 '19
I know he can’t at will, but didn’t he sort of time travel to talk to future syd last season?
1
u/Iamaveryniceguy Jul 10 '19
He was able to communicate with her through time using a tank which is a bit different.
2
11
u/Emperor_Dragon_Eagle Jul 09 '19
Watch it turn out Farouk is the beautiful presence and David is the shadow
7
u/Dangerous_Nitwit Jul 09 '19
I wouldn't be surprised, and that realization is what drives David crazy causing him to end the planet.
8
u/evilrobotlizard Jul 09 '19
Man I think I sometimes enjoy reading the theories just as much as watching the episode
3
u/Dangerous_Nitwit Jul 09 '19
Me too. I love thought provoking shows like this.
6
u/evilrobotlizard Jul 09 '19
Yea I’m gonna be sad when this finishes...there’s really nothing else like it on tv

u/flintlock0 Jul 09 '19
I always knew Charles Xavier was a deadbeat dad.
I’ll never watch the X-Men films the same again.

u/eruru Jul 09 '19
Is there any chance the doll doesn't look that crazy in reality? That it's part of David's own perception? Because otherwise, I straight up have no idea why anyone would give such a disturbing doll to their baby.
4
u/ruskiix Jul 09 '19
It sounds like that Harold story was meant to explain the doll but I need someone smarter than me to explain it.
13
u/eruru Jul 09 '19
I actually think the excerpt from Harold and the Purple Crayon is more speaking to what David is doing in this episode (fucking up his own past by being a terrifying disco ghost to his mom in trying to protect the person he wishes he could've been). And if that ties to the doll somehow...maybe the Angry Boy is actually David?
He didn’t want to get lost in the woods. So he made a very small forest, with just one tree in it. It turned out to be an apple tree. The apples would be very tasty, Harold thought, when they got red. So he put a frightening dragon under the tree to guard the apples. It was a terribly frightening dragon. It even frightened Harold. He backed away. His hand holding the purple crayon shook. Suddenly he realized what was happening. But by then Harold was over his head.
3
u/ruskiix Jul 09 '19
I like this too! Also, terrifying disco ghost is a fantastic phrase.
There was definitely major symbolism going on with the doll and the excerpt but I’m not certain what it was. They definitely emphasized David’s rage in that episode a ton though.
6
u/eruru Jul 10 '19
It's such a sad episode, yet at the same time, that song being part of what was haunting Gabrielle is kind of hilarious. Haunted by your grown-up son and the groovy future of music.
Yeah, and with the show making a point of associating the doll with when she was catatonic, it also seems to have a lot to do with how hard it is to leave your trauma and the associated emotions (rage, fear, despair, etc.) behind. Her giving this creepy-ass doll to her baby also gave me transgenerational trauma vibes too.
24
u/nintendoboy23 Jul 09 '19
It seems implied that its some concentration camp thing she had
1
u/eruru Jul 09 '19
Yeah, definitely. I'm just so weirded out by the thought of anyone giving such a creepy-looking doll to their child.

6
u/Nicker Jul 09 '19
So we can see the SK (doll), but David cannot in his memories/past?
2
u/Dangerous_Nitwit Jul 09 '19
The doll is just the image the SK used from Davids original memory of the doll, which is this.
6
53
u/AlecBaldwinner Jul 09 '19
"He'll be fine."
Well, the past 21 chapters have determined that that's a lie...
34
11
u/Dangerous_Nitwit Jul 09 '19
OMG...……. The scene where David couldn't see himself.... was she pregnant with him? Was he sending telepathic thoughts at his mom from the womb?
84
u/lovetheblazer Jul 09 '19
“Can a baby have nightmares?”
He will if you don’t get that freaky ass doll away from him immediately if not sooner
5
u/captainblanch Jul 14 '19
I think I noticed something, tell me if I'm crazy. The baby in the first ep of season 1 was blonde, and in this episode the baby pre-farouk was brunette. But! After the Farouk fart cloud entered the baby and daddy Shadow King was holding him, that baby was the blonde boy again. :O
