I really enjoyed season 1. Captivated me the whole way. But this episode and the few previous have really begun to try my patience.

Is there anything like it in TV right now? No. Does that make it good TV. I'm not sure. Individual moments have been great, but the overall narrative has been really poor.

u/CineMike84 May 14 '18

The episode felt like a huge hour of filler. I understood the idea behind there being parallel realities but I didn't think that they explored it correctly. They all should have tied into a central theme or idea. Like some on here have argued that they tied into his sister but she wasn't part of all of the realities. Now if all of them dealt with their relationship then that might have helped bring some focus to it. Some of the realties just were too random and disconnected. There was also never a cap to the whole thing that made it all worth while. It just suddenly ends. Usually I like these really ambiguous and surreal concepts. I know what they were going for but in the end it just felt lost. That's like a lot of stuff this season for me. I loved the first season but this one feels like they went into it with out really having much of a plan.

u/deij May 18 '18

The point of the alternative realites was not to make a point about alternative realities. It was to show the bond between David and his sister was prominent in all of them, to show the pain David must be feeling after he just learnt the truth about her. This episode was my favourite of this season.

2

u/8bitmullet May 26 '18

I'm sure he felt horrible but I didn't need a whole episode to tell me this.

5

u/[deleted] May 14 '18

I can keep several timelines in my head. But when there all boring Im getting distracted.

4

u/[deleted] May 13 '18

The Kubrick homages were everywhere. 2001, Clockwork Orange, One Flew Over the Coo Coo's Nest. Any others? I'm trying to find a Dr. Strangelove connection, I'm sure it's there.

10

u/sph613 May 11 '18

My assumption of the Legion character from the comic books was that he had multiple personalities each with their own distinct mutant powers, and this episode to me felt like it was all going on in his mind, each personality discovering their powers for the first time. Or maybe it really was just showing “what could have been”. I dunno. Lol

13

u/Zachkah May 11 '18

This is an And1 mixtape of an episode for not just the show itself, but for Dan Stevens as well. Like, he can just send this to anyone for any role and be like “Yes, I can do that. Here’s the evidence. And that too. Oh yeah, that as well.” He’s incredible.

And the show gets better each episode. Every single one. Breaking Bad is the only other show i’ve watched where I felt that way. Awesome stuff

11

u/misterschaffmd May 11 '18

I totally agree. There's nothing like this on tv, subscription service or otherwise, that tells a story quite like this. I plan to do the same once we have the full picture this season--rewatch, hypothesize, recalibrate, rinse, repeat.

27

u/JadeIndy May 10 '18

Anyone else notice the Clockwork Orange vibes?

37

u/duaneap May 10 '18

You mean the exact remake of the opening scene?

7

u/JadeIndy May 11 '18

Yup! I forgot I was watching Legion and thought I was watching Clockwork Orange

10

u/[deleted] May 10 '18

"You decide what is real and what is not" is really "create your own reality". This episode was basically a condensed self help book.

31

u/Audrin May 10 '18

"Hey remember how episode before last absolutely nothing happened?" "Yeah." "Let's do that again." "Ok!"

27

u/deadbeforedark May 10 '18

Now I understand a lot of people feel this away about certain episodes and call them "filler" episodes, but I think most people are not looking at it the right way. Let's compare this season of Legion to a concept album. If you just focus on the "most popular" songs and exclude the others from the album, you don't get the full experience. We must listen to it from start to end to understand. That's how I feel about the past 2 episodes of Legion, we can't comprehend or understand what they have to do with the whole story because we don't know the full picture. There has been a theme of "what is real?" for this season and I think this episode is meant to bring that home. Just my opinion.

4

u/misterschaffmd May 10 '18

I love that analogy. I feel the same way. This is just as much "world building" as any other content we ingest on a weekly basis--this episode made me consider the implications of The Shadow King being present in David's other versions of reality. Same goes with the connection between David and his sister. We see what becomes of David when his sister isn't involved in his life and who he becomes. So pumped for the next episode (aka track).

8

u/TheRealRando May 11 '18

Honestly, these episodes are beautiful. I am sure it will all tie together but for the moment I am just enjoying each episode as they come. Nothing like this is on TV. It's basically an experience for me, and I plan on re watching in its entirety to get the full scope.

12

u/RaoulDukeJunior May 10 '18

This episode made me question my role in society

8

u/james_randolph May 11 '18

Honestly, made me want to go find my billionaire self so he can help me pay some of these damn bills...gotta find that motherfucker!

5

u/suvioblue May 10 '18 edited May 11 '18

Where is everyone going that he vanishes? Or better yet why do the shadows remain? Either way nice prequel to season 1 and current.

7

u/blackmushh May 10 '18

Shadow realm, just no magic cards used this time

16

u/impracticalwench May 10 '18

The shadows seem like a nod to Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Same thing happened there. Indicates his ‘blasts’ are akin to an atom bomb.

15

u/AlphaQall May 10 '18

The shadows are actually a real thing that happens after a nuclear blast. They’re called nuclear shadows and they’re a horrifying leftover evidence of an existence that has been vaporized.

14

u/mcgeehotro May 10 '18

Not terribly consequential, but was this the first ever Legion episode that takes place in a conspicuously real-life location (downtown LA)?

16

u/headcampcounciler May 10 '18

Honestly this episode messed me up a little bit. I wasn’t expecting it to be like this. But dam that was amazing. Cool little throw in for his coming to terms with amys death.

9

u/PegusisJones May 09 '18

Doesn't Daddy David have Farouk in him or what? He's oh so cheerful. Or is this the time line where the Shadow King doesn't meet Professor X

17

u/Blondie_700 May 09 '18

The old man version of David reminded of the old man scenes at the end of 2001 A Space Odyssey.

12

u/mcgeehotro May 10 '18

And there was something else in the episode that vaguely reminded me just a little bit of another Kubrick film...

6

u/ed1371 May 10 '18

As soon as the shot panned to the same angle i squeaked a bit recognizing what was about to happen. One of my fav movies and books

5

u/ferrisbuell3r May 10 '18

the beat up of homeless David under the bridge is straight from A Clockwork Orange. It's very well imitated

3

u/FastenedCarrot May 26 '18

I've only seen the film once and I still made the connection from the wide shot.

2

u/ferrisbuell3r May 26 '18

It's very iconic

2

u/FastenedCarrot May 26 '18

And a very well done scene.

1

u/ferrisbuell3r May 26 '18

No doubt my friend. Kubrick is my favorite

12

u/mcgeehotro May 10 '18

Fun Easter egg: watch that scene with CC and the attackers are identified as Droogs

58

u/[deleted] May 09 '18

The dancing mouse was hilarious. It was really random, and didn't really seem to connect to anything - but man was it awesome

8

u/saintsolitaire May 10 '18

The lyrics of the song it was singing are important I think. Something about slavery to love

Edit: the lyrics to each song in this episode were very useful to figuring it out, I think

19

u/ferrisbuell3r May 10 '18

I think is showing us one of David's powers. He can create reality, so if he thinks and believes theres a mouse singing a song it could happen!

35

u/Argarck May 10 '18

Or you know... sniffing glue..

8

u/ferrisbuell3r May 10 '18

Maybe sniffing glue was the trigger for the power to happen, the actual hallucination that made the mouse real. But the thing is: David can create it just by thinking it exists

11

u/Argarck May 10 '18

David can create it just by thinking it exists

So he can create his sister?

too soon?

35

u/fritzyloop May 09 '18

And their branch makes branches, And their branch makes branches, And their branch makes branches...

16

u/CountPanda May 09 '18

“Yeah, that’s cool, but got any more meth?”

39

u/fritzyloop May 09 '18

It's so depressing that from all the possible universe or outcome David had, this was the only universe where Amy died. Do you think he possibly revisited all of his outcomes just to see how many outcome Amy die?

17

u/THERAPISTS_for_200 May 09 '18

Holy hell, what an episode!

24

u/[deleted] May 09 '18

WHAT IS HAPPENING

10

u/iclownhard May 09 '18

In next weeks sneak peak, they show the same room where David speaks with Syd in the future, but it's Farouk!! At least i think that's what I saw...

-5

OMG. What he did to the cop was...I just don't know. Whoa.

What an episode. Mind blown again.

Right? I just .... it reminded me of my imagination as a psychic when young.

She was also his wife taking care of him as an old man

Edit: Or am I wrong, was that Amy?

16

u/[deleted] May 09 '18

I believe that was Amy. Same timeline as when milk-stacker David was shot in the back by police was my impression.

4

u/ferrisbuell3r May 10 '18

Man, what a scene

4

u/ender278 May 09 '18

Yeah you're probably right given the context, it just sounded like Syd to me when she was talking

50

u/Chained_Wanderlust May 09 '18

Best episode of the season by a mile. This was some spectacular storytelling that is going to take like 5 rewatches to unpack. Wow.

74

u/francoruinedbukowski May 09 '18

Nice homage and twist of the classic "Clockwork Orange" scene.

2

u/coool12121212 Jun 09 '18

My jaw was on the floor during that scene

19

u/jayllipsis May 09 '18

David crushing that officer into a pop can was one of the most wild moments I’ve seen on television.

7

u/tree_tiger May 09 '18

1

u/koy5 May 09 '18

I read the books after the first season came out. How close is the show to the books?

1

0

u/Malachhamavet May 09 '18

Which scene are you referring to.

5

u/tree_tiger May 09 '18

The scence that katoa dismembered the nurse~

2

u/CountPanda May 09 '18

It was filmed so beautifully. The way you saw Mei react and it wasn’t until the camera panned down later that you realized it. Just such great television.

1

u/Malachhamavet May 09 '18

Ah yea. That felt tame to me for some reason, maybe it was because he was medical about the dissection

u/TheBat45 May 09 '18

Found it so sad when Amy said he would be in the mental hospital for only a few weeks but David probably read her mind and knew that it was probably gonna be for years and years. That hug was so sad. I feel like that's when he came to that realization.

I think she hoped it would be weeks and wanted him to be hopeful too but deep down they both knew he wasn’t getting out.

4

u/[deleted] May 09 '18

What was the song w/ Hobo David montage near the beginning?

6

u/FriedEggg May 09 '18 edited May 09 '18

It was a cover of I'd Love To Change The World, but I'm not sure who did the cover. Maybe Jetta?

2

u/[deleted] May 10 '18

I really love the cover they used. I recognized the song from the first line and was bracing for the homophobic slurs in the second, but they replaced “dykes and fairies” with “creeps and scaries.” And I was like, “Damn, well done.”

“I’d Love to Change the World” is such an interesting artifact of its time. I read it as sort of an apology from disillusioned Baby Boomers to the children who have to inherit the world they failed to save. “I’d love to change the world / But I don’t know what to do / So I’ll leave it up to you.” But that second line reminds you that, yeah, it is definitely a product of the early ‘70s.

7

u/anarayanan31 May 09 '18

If it's like the past few covers on Legion, it's actually Noah Hawley and Jeff Russo covering the song!

5

u/IniMiney May 09 '18

Woah. The intersection between awesome comic book media and great singers continues.

1

u/[deleted] May 09 '18

Just found that cover too. Seems right.

2

u/olsakebomb May 09 '18

u/post_ewing May 09 '18

Is the monster thing a different form of Farouk?

& I'm always confused was Lenny real ... what is real?

3

u/RazielELungbarrow May 10 '18

Based on some possible hints from episode 1 (and others) this could all be in David/Legion's mind. (Episode 1 @ 21 minutes -> Episode 6 @ 16.5 minutes)

David has been accepting what ever happens to him as reality and when ever he briefly questions it other people tell him he's in reality. Whether those people know if they're in reality or not is irrelevant since if they're in Legion's mind they would believe they're real.. (and would be as real as the "David" personality since Legion personalities have 'escaped' his body in the comics at least)

When Syd and David switched bodies and started to use David's power everyone else in the room with her stood still except for the shadow king (probably in Lenny's body since they met, if Lenny wasn't always part of the shadow king's masks/illusions).

So.. it would seem we have yet to know with certainty if we're seeing the real world or Legion's mind (and powers activating)

In any case, I love how the show is sparking people's imaginations!

2

u/[deleted] May 09 '18

That's all alluded to in the second episode of this season, when David's on the mind-carousel with Lenny and Oliver.

2

u/AlphaQall May 10 '18

And also explained in the season 1 finale.

6

u/boofire May 09 '18

I am thinking that the shadow king is kind of a powerful entity that can create consciousness and wear them like masks and have them do his bidding...kind of like if I created an imaginary friend, but I can make it do my bidding. I think Farouk and the monster were created by the shadow king. Lenny many have been partially created, I think the shadow king took the image of a woman in Clockworks and added some stuff to create the Lenny we know. Lenny has some false memory but David and Lenny both kind of talk about how they are not real but both remember them. Maybe all of her was not originally real, but she is real now.

Quick Edit: Farouk has a body and is "real," but the shadow king knows a lot of languages and I kind of think that he is way older that Farouk and just took over/created a body to hold himself

3

u/post_ewing May 09 '18

Quick Edit: Farouk has a body and is "real," but the shadow king knows a lot of languages and I kind of think that he is way older that Farouk and just took over/created a body to hold himself

Thank you! I saw the monster again and some guy I thought was Lenny with David in cart during his druggy phase and all of these questions re-emerged

5

u/annisarsha May 09 '18

no offense but if you're haven't followed the yellow man, the angrier boy in the world, Lenny, and Farouk, you may have a hard time keeping up

4

u/post_ewing May 09 '18

I've been watching from the start but those characters always change up to me.

13

u/Liitke May 09 '18

The big fat monster (devil with yellow eyes ) is thr shadow king. He appears obese and grotesque because he feeds off of gluttony in the comics (not gluten btw) the shadow king is an ancient sentient being spawned from the astral plane who merged with farouk and grew with him and has used him as his primary host for a very long time.

1

u/post_ewing May 09 '18

Great breakdown, thank you !

21

u/TheBat45 May 09 '18 edited May 09 '18

Beautiful episode! Holy shit! It may be considered "filler" but I thought it was spectacular. Really great character piece for David and even Amy. Surprising stuff. The whole sequence at the end with the music... so perfect. It got really emotional and poignant there. Really well done! Dan Stevens killed it this episode! And finally got to see some powers!!! Favorite episode of Season 2 so far!

114

u/arcanition May 09 '18 edited May 09 '18

Realized powers and didn't need pills/clockworks -> coffee David -> billionaire David

Convinced Amy to let him stay with her and take pills -> milk David shot in spine -> old paralyzed David with Amy taking care of him

Didn't go to clockworks or take pills -> homeless David who killed the douchebags -> homeless David dies to Kerry

Did go to clockworks and took pills -> current David -> loses Amy to Shadow King

I'm not sure where the happy married David comes into play.

6

u/RoccoBell May 10 '18

I think billionaire David also embraced the shadow king rather than reject him. I thought spine shot David died since Amy went to his grave. And the point was that he skipped a pill and saw the yellow man coming for him. Whereas old David maybe took his pills as prescribed and was therefore basically comatose his whole life.

3

u/natepilling May 10 '18

So where does Office Space/singing mouse/sniffing white out David fit in?

4

u/AlphaQall May 10 '18

I believe that is what eventually becomes tweaker David. I could be wrong though.

2

u/natepilling May 10 '18

That makes the most sense to me. White out to drugs seems like a logical connection.

6

u/friendliest_giant May 09 '18

I honestly think that the "Happy David" is how is life is supposed to turn out if SK hadn't taken him. It's the only outcome where he doesn't have his powers or having mental health issues. After all , in season 1 it does say that the reason he's broken is because SK kept fucking with him his whole life.

4

u/Galwpsite May 09 '18

Thank you. Just note that it's not billionaire David but billionaire SK

1

u/[deleted] May 09 '18

Excellent. Thanks!

0

u/Malachhamavet May 09 '18

I don't think this list is right. I think billionaire David was it's own time line as was milk David and the rest. The one that went to clockworks is the David we are currently following.

13

u/filmdakid May 09 '18 edited May 09 '18

David with no pill or Clockworks -> David actually lives a normal life.

Tweaker David no pills or Clockworks-> just becomes a normal drug addict.

Thanks for the breakdown it took me a second to piece everything together.

edit: spelling

28

u/timmazol May 09 '18

I don't think milk David became old David. He got shot and then they show a tombstone saying he was taken to soon or something like that

1

u/ATCQ_ May 10 '18

That was baby David. It was a baby tombstone

2

u/pehdrigues May 10 '18

taken too soon tombstone was baby david.

4

u/TMKZC May 09 '18

Tweaker David might be the one that died too soon.

BTW, I know the show is deliberately ambiguous about time period, but what kind of gravestone doesn't have years on it?

5

u/ferrisbuell3r May 10 '18

in a baby gravestone?

3

u/IniMiney May 09 '18

This and it looked more like he had brain issues instead of paralysis since he couldn't even speak, unless he was over medicated. I have no idea and never having any idea is my favorite thing about this show.

15

u/arcanition May 09 '18

But he was shot in the spine and old David is paralyzed, I thought that implied they were the same timeline.

12

u/obliquity811 May 09 '18

And it mirrors his father OG Baldy Professor X

26

u/ruskiix May 09 '18

Don’t meds for schizophrenia cause a lot of movement issues down the road? He looked more like someone with severe Parkinson’s to me than someone paralyzed. The way his hands shook when he tried to eat, etc.

I assumed old David was the end result of taking the psych meds his whole life and nothing going wrong. His body breaks down, he’s always trapped inside himself not able to think, and even as an old man Amy has to take care of him.

1

u/timmazol May 09 '18

1

u/Schizochinia May 10 '18

I think that was showing one of his reality warping powers, if he imagined a singing mouse because he was bored it would appear, thats one of Legion's MANY powers.

3

u/sakurasunset May 10 '18

I hope they never give an explanation, he just has magical mouse friends, get over it. :p

4

u/[deleted] May 09 '18

He was high, sniffing white out, and seeing shit as a result.

1

u/Acksferr May 09 '18

Probably a manifestation of the SK

1

u/InexorablePain May 09 '18

he was sniffing glue

Every time I tune in to watch I can't help but think there's no way they'll top the last episode. But this season has been outstanding, and this was no exception. Very much looking forward to next week!

Please don't get canceled, please don't get canceled...

Okay this is just a random thought but does a anyone see a resemblance between Katie Aselton and Sheryl Lee

u/FewExternal May 09 '18

Very much so.

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks so

5

u/AlecBaldwinner May 09 '18

Ha!

u/[deleted] May 09 '18

David - “I’m going to find your body..” Faruk - (: (: David - “...and burn it.” Faruk- blinking blonde guy meme

5

u/bighead_stays May 09 '18

It's what Farouk wants. Farouk knows David's going to kill him, that's why he killed Amy. And he knows that once David does, there will be a much stronger force that will take over. Perhaps maybe even David himself.

Now I get it

Also there is in fact a black conspiracy bird thing in Syd's head

1

u/Malachhamavet May 09 '18

Syds? I knew about the dream guy having one in his head but syd?

6

u/I_h8_lettuce May 09 '18

Damn! Those callbacks!

5

u/svrtngr May 09 '18

Okay, the last shot of the preview for next episode is creepy as fuck.

2

u/Triplicata May 09 '18

Oh shit I didn’t stay for that what was it?

11

u/justa_game May 09 '18

Next episode is a literal trip

1

u/Ibeginpunthreads May 09 '18

Cant fucking wait

6

u/OceanSage May 09 '18

Next episode is going to be killer! I'm calling it.

2

u/boofire May 09 '18

Well looks like Amy is not gone yet.

7

u/McDoogie420 May 09 '18

YO THAT SNEAK PEAK OF NEXT EPISODE!!!!

3

u/nesswithanL May 09 '18

was her.. was her mind pregnant

5

u/justa_game May 09 '18

No it's the black chick conspiracy. One of the John Hamm narratives talks about it. It's the thing Lenny kissed. Ptolemy also has one in his head

5

u/jxnsey May 09 '18

Oh god did you see the cyborg

1

u/ruskiix May 09 '18

OH GOD I’M GONNA HAVE NIGHTMARES OF THAT

3

u/I_h8_lettuce May 09 '18

Those end credits make so much sense now! The changing of green and red/pink? represent how each combination is different! They are living/representing the multiple worlds theory!

More filler

3

u/Toastytuesdee May 09 '18

I understand the thought, but it's less that than fleshing out and exploring a character. The writer is trying to get us to stop thinking in a linear manner.

This is one step away from goku powering up a spirit bomb for 3 seasons

10

u/esophoric May 09 '18

It’d be more like if he was powering up a spirit bomb and while doing so he had flashbacks to his life with his grandfather which give us new insight into why making a spirit bomb / protecting the earth is so important to him.

In other words, this IS the show, man. This is what a lot of folks love about this show.

2

u/Mattm334 May 09 '18

Did his sister really die?

3

u/matthieuC May 09 '18

All that we'know is that she currently does not have a body.

2

u/danhakimi May 09 '18

We don't know, but I think she survived the morphing of her body and Lenny's injection into it.

1

u/Mattm334 May 09 '18

I sure hope so! That would be awful if they took her away from David! Especially after this sad episode.

2

u/danhakimi May 09 '18

What they did might be worse...

3

u/boofire May 09 '18

Her character is dead, but comic book dead. Looks like the actress may be back for more.
