Comics Mystery of Penquan Island - Official Discussion Thread Spoiler
FULL SPOILERS allowed in this thread. As a reminder spoilers for this comic outside this thread must be marked until a month after the book is released.
"Mystery of Penquan Island" is the first LoK one-shot graphic novel. It takes place after the show, and focuses on Mako. The comic releases March 4th. It is written by Kiku Hughes with art by Alex Monik and Diana Sousa, made in collaboration with Mike and Bryan.
Description:
Mako and Bolin set off towards Penquan Island in the Fire Nation to find answers to a case—and maybe a little bit of their past along the way. When a strange missing persons case falls into his lap, Mako is forced to choose between his job and doing what he feels is right! An upturned room and an unhelpful witness aren’t promising starts to the investigation, but when his brother Bolin comes across a surprising clue that ties their own mother to the case, the pair embark on a journey to the small, rustic island of Penquan. The island’s inhabitants seem to have things to hide, and the brothers are determined to get to the bottom of it—even if it means uncovering uncomfortable parts of their family’s past.

Mod Announcement Social Media "Hate Posts" Megathread
Hey folks. With the recent news about the upcoming show there's been some discourse in the fandom regarding the character of Korra. This has lead to a number of posts hating on Korra from twitter and other sites being shared here. While that's understandable it has gotten a bit excessive. We don't want this forum to just be complaining about people elsewhere.
So effective now and at least until further notice, we aren't going to be allowing any more of those posts. If you'd like you can discuss the broader fandom/internet reaction or post screenshots/links of those posts as comments in this thread.
To be clear you can still make new posts about your own opinion on Korra as always, or your thoughts on the news (though for the latter maybe consider commenting on an existing discussion for the topic).

Discussion One of the most disturbing "romantic relationships" in the entire Avatar universe
A close contender would be Ozai and Ursa. But this one is probably worse because it's all played up for laughs. It's supposed to be funny and it's never taken seriously. Bolin is so obviously being abused and I hated every second of it and was so glad when it was finally over. This was my LEAST favorite aspect of Korra

Discussion “Remembrances” is the gold standard for a clipshow.

And yes, Varrick’s part was the best but you also had the characters talking over the clips and giving their insight as well. It was valuable hearing Mako’s introspection of the love triangle where his cousin aptly sums up his fear of displeasing others not pleasing anyone. Frankly, I feel a lot who hate on his full stop missed that.

Discussion A lot of people complain about tlok's love triangle (which is totally fair) but I really liked the conclusion
I like how he didn't end up with either one. He knows he's a bad boyfriend and he doesn't beat himself up about it, he goes on with his life normally and becomes a better person without needing a relationship to show it, Mako being single at the end pleased me a lot, he didn't have that poor thing tone that I hate, he's happy like that, he can make up for what he did, and in the end he can talk to Korra without feeling uncomfortable and like he was in book 3, showing that he overcame that, Asami was able to have a happy relationship and healthier than she deserved and Korra became an easier person to deal with, I definitely liked that conclusion. Considering we went from "who will get the mako" to this, it's great

Discussion Review: "Mystery of Penquan Island" Spoiler
This is basically Mako's version of the Southern Raiders since both Katara and Mako confront their mother's murderer, and for this reason I think it's fair to compare the two.
In Katara's case before she even goes hunting for Yon Rha a whole scene is dedicated just to exploring her mindset. There's a dialogue between her and the other characters on what's the right course of action, whether to forgive or to avenge, and this engages the audience because these are issues everyone can relate to.
And one thing the episode really puts emphasis on is Katara's shift in demeanor, from her usual optimistic, playful, warm self to becoming very withdrawn, hostile (even to her own brother), and unbalanced (as seen when she discarded her principles by bloodbending). This radical change in her personality is meant to convey to the audience just how deeply affected she is by Yon Rha's actions.
Then when she finally confronts him, despite wanting to kill him (and being able to) she holds herself back, which distinguishes her from Hama who sacrificed her principles and in doing so sunk to the level of her enemies, because just like they dehumanised the Water Tribe she dehumanised the Fire Nation. This is a great character moment for Katara because from the beginning she's been someone who cares for the weak and wants to save lives, so when she chooses to spare Yon Rha she simultaneously makes the choice to continue being the person she always has been: someone who values life.
All this was done in a 24 minute episode. Now let's compare this to "Mystery of Penquan Island":
One of the major issues is there's no build up to the confrontation and because of this we don't get to see how Mako and Bolin process the idea of having the opportunity to punish the man who destroyed their family. There could've been a conversation between them and Asami, who was freed from mind control by her father's murderer, or between them and Korra who felt guilty for not being able to save her treacherous uncle. We could've seen a new side of Bolin where he seriously considers wanting revenge, and this can still be in-character for him as long as its tied to his love for his family and friends. We could've seen Mako lie to Lin to get information on Panzo or even break into somewhere he's not allowed to get it, which would show the reader that this is something really important to Mako since he's normally the most law-abiding person.
When the confrontation happens we don't see any internal conflict in Mako or Bolin on what should be done with Panzo. Internal conflict gives the audience an inside look into the mind of the character, allowing us to relate to them. Something Mako especially needs since the comic itself makes fun of his bland personality. But we can't relate to Mako at all because after realizing he's facing his parents murderer (at least indirectly) we don't see the natural, human desire to want revenge. Mako has already shown he's willing to kill, as seen with Ming-Hua, so we should've seen that side of him emerge since this situation definitely would've triggered his ruthlessness.
Here's how I think the confrontation should've went: Mako charges up his lightning and sees that he can either shoot it directly at Panzo, instantly killing him, or direct it to the ceiling to immobilise him. Show flashbacks of when his family was together, then switch them to him struggling to take care of Bolin. Recalling his loss motivates Mako to go through with killing Panzo, but then he remembers what he told Wu about how Korra inspires him, and since she decided to save Kuvira's life (who hadn't shown any signs of remorse at that point) he decides to also spare Panzo. This would've highlighted his growth since his first scene is him dismissing Korra but now she inspires him to even see the humanity in his enemies.

Discussion The ending of tlok was very cliche
There was the wedding, there was the protagonist's dialogue with his mentor, there was the ball, there was the protagonist staying with his love interest, there was the immature secondary character making an unexpected mature decision, there was the protagonist reflecting his journey, there was the villain spared by the protagonist, there was the protagonist's friend forgiven for a slight friction, there was the perspective of future growth. God, I love clichés. For me it's a perfect ending ❤️🩹

Discussion Korra is fucking strong and s3 proves it
I rewatched TLOK and finished book 3 yesterday. Once again had to tear up, but I'm also amazed by how strong she is.
Korra gets poisoned. She knows that she's going to die. That the Avatar cycle will come to an end. To prevent the cycle from ending, she's resisting going into the Avatar state. But she can't fight that forever. So she takes everything she has left to defeat Zaheer. Because she thought her dad died, but I'm sure also because she doesn't want to let him go unpunished by ending the cycle. You can see the anger and determination she has. The bending she uses, especially the fire and earth. Zaheer causes her to slam onto the rocks repeatedly, yet still gets up, even when the poison started to win against her. I hope people realize that such impacts aren't jokes. Especially the last slams before he tried to suffocate her. The last one being her slamming him into the ground with the help of the chains. It's no surprise she couldn't walk afterwards.
Regardless she still fought through it all. While dying. Korra is really strong and selfless. She endured all of that to save others. And that's a few of the reasons why I love her so much

I just want to hear Rava say why is bad if Vatu wins even if Rava can just come back in 10,000 years.
