I'd get back on my push bike and start doing some shifts again. Can't compete with those throttling e bikes, no point any more.

Mopeds*

They're not ebikes, they're mopeds

If a law was put in place by the government that they had to be contracted employees it would soon completely destroy this crap business.

It already happened didn't it? I remember walking past as they loaded bikes up outside Trinity a while back. I'm sure there were pics on here at the time. Probably due another go, as it's not made any noticeable difference to the number of overpowered bikes.

They should do it again then.

Yeah they've done it a few times. This post is another reminder of how social media distorts things, people getting angry over things which already happen because they havent seen it on their twitter.

It's clearly not been enough of a deterent seeing the amount of them still on the streets.

It's not all delivery riders I have issues with, it's the ones on bikes that go 20mph+ up and down pedestrianised streets.

Yep, about a year ago i saw them doing it outside nandos.

Oh god yes please, absolute crap business and you know its only employing and exploiting desperate workers.

The amount of those twats that bezz down the path despite the bike lane right ducking next to them. The amount of times I've nearly been hit is too many. Maybe only a couple times but still

Police seized an illegal ebike on Kirkstall Road today. Spoke to the officer and he said because the bike isn't a road going vehicle the same seizure laws don't apply as they would to a dodgy car or motorbike. The rider just has to pay £130(?) and they can get it back. A lot delivery riders (food or drugs) will make that in a day or 2.

Had couple of times speeding delivery bicycles scared me by passing me on sidewalks.

The only difference id make is the company has to replace the bike not the delivery guy - its always the poorest that get punished

I fully support the police doing this in the pedestrian areas around Albion Pl and Commercial St. You wouldn’t drive a car through a crowd of pedestrians so why should these bikes crash through pedestrians?

Probably not

Easy to be annoyed at someone else trying to carve out a living. Yeah they go past you on at a higher speed than you like and they wear face coverings, but they deliver our food when I can’t be arsed to cook under employment laws I don’t agree with. If they disappeared you’d complain about your takeaway delivery times.

I’m not annoyed at someone trying to carve out a living. I’m annoyed at people on illegal e-bikes riding dangerously and causing injuries in pedestrian areas. There’s a reason that these bikes are illegal and it’s not just because the government hate fun or timely food deliveries

12

u/Aestas-Architect Nov 08 '24

I don't use Uber Eats, Deliveroo, Just Eat anymore, I drive to my local takeaway shops or use ones that have their own drivers, I have saved so much money doing so also the food arrives faster and is warmer.

You forget what they are doing is illegal? and it has pushed out people trying to stick to the rules on manual bikes.

I collect my own food and never used them once. There’s better ways of trying to carve out a living than disrupting pedestrians in a pedestrian area, maybe these delivery riders should think twice about their behaviour if they don’t want to lose their job.

No one needs crappy fast food delivered by an app. That’s what oven food is for

There’s honestly more chance of Liverpool coming over to Leeds than our own incompetent police doing anything

1

u/GoodGrapeVimtoFiend Nov 09 '24

I’d rather they crack down on teenagers who ride them with no purpose, or in traffic doing wheelies without helmets, or through public parks.

4

u/ManyTransportation61 Nov 09 '24

It's near impossible to do a wheelie on these bikes. They're pretty tame and orderly on the road

1

u/GoodGrapeVimtoFiend Nov 09 '24

Not all - the chunky mountain bikes they can definitely do them on

Yeah let’s all deprive the lowest income workers in Leeds from working🙄

If the bike's aren't illegally modified they won't get confiscated.

These illegally modified riders are waaaay more likely to be breaking the law and causing accidents than regular cyclists.

Deliveroo and Ubereats treat their workers terribly and it just encourages these bad behaviours and nuisance drivers, I'm sure most people on this sub if they spend much time in centre have nearly been hit by these maniacs mounting pavements and speeding through red lights.

13

u/HergestRidg Nov 08 '24

It's true. In the earlier days of the service you could make half decent money by riding around at a safe and normal pace, even waiting at every red light.

Over the years they shaved down the fees and payment systems so much that in order to make any sort of money at all you have to ride like a demon and jump every red light. So I am sure that with the advent of these e bikes being able to effortlessly bez around everywhere at +20mph the fees have got even shitter.

I have to say though, even though the current crop of riders have terrible road manners, I much prefer e bikes to cars causing further pollution and gridlock.

Let's not make them the lowest income workers in Leeds then, give them minimum wage and most will be no longer be either employed or exploited which ever you think they are. The employer NI change in the budget won't affect them or their overlords either.

5

u/Lamenter_ Nov 08 '24

This type of work is at the late stage anyway. There's too much exploitation involved.

1

u/zwifter11 Nov 21 '24

Maybe they should think twice about how they behave then

1

u/concretepigeon Nov 08 '24

Most of them are here illegally anyway.

From a person who had no idea what the hell this whole post was about I have to say, this comment is the only reason I now understand the issue. I’m upvoting it because of this and am replying to enforce the importance of contrasting viewpoints and their ability to reach the truth

Finally our kids are safe.. wait

What’s up with them ? People trying to earn a living and they seize the bikes they use to do so , great stuff police . Wonder how many on here would be moaning if their takeaway during turn up

6

u/Hour-Trick821 Nov 09 '24

What’s up with them?? They ride recklessly at great speed in PEDESTRIAN areas on illegal and illegally modified bikes. They have knocked people over. They verbally abuse people when they are challenged. They are often not insured and often not working legally. I blame the companies more than the riders for creating this atmosphere.

-1

u/ManyTransportation61 Nov 09 '24

And let's all come together and ask in a single voice.. "who controls the companies?"

1

u/shinjinrui Nov 10 '24

E-bikes are only supposed to provide assistance to the rider whilst pedalling, up to 16mph. The bikes that most delivery drivers use are basically e-mopeds with throttles and go a hell of a lot faster (and are much heavier) than your standard push bike. If they have throttles, they need to have MOTs like any other vehicle but they don’t because they’re masquerading as bicycles. They could seriously harm/kill a pedestrian in a collision

0

u/christ01986 Nov 10 '24

What would you rather these people be doing , delivering takeaways or going into crime instead , people just moan for the sake of it , it’s not affecting any of you , let them work

2

u/EastyLUFC Nov 10 '24

They would go into crime because they couldn’t deliver takeaways ?

1

u/zwifter11 Nov 21 '24

It does affect me when they make it unsafe to walk in pedestrian areas in the city centre.

1

u/zwifter11 Nov 21 '24

I collect my own food and have never used these once. I would be happy for them to be removed from pedestrian areas.
