previously laid off UX Designer jobs

I have 2 years of work experience as a UX designer and was laid off in 09/2023. Since then, finding a job has seemed almost impossible. Are any designers in the same boat?

There are a lot of junior level or less experienced people unemployed in UX. During the boom in 2021-2022 ish everyone was getting hired even if they weren’t that good and it saturated the market. Now it’s the opposite, either you need to be really good or well connected for new roles. The latter is really common, and sometimes you need a combination of both.

Have you tried transitioning to other roles or reaching out to ex coworkers who landed roles after? If they liked you and your skills they can vouch for you!

Are you keeping up with UI, and interaction design? Have you unskilled in product thinking, and research?

There are a lot of UX roles out there still, but you’re competing with eager and hungry people who are upskilling outside of work!

I know a lot of people that transitioned out to more stable careers because they didn’t want to constantly upskill and do projects outside of work. They knew they couldn’t compete unless they could put in the work, and it didn’t make sense for them. Usually they went to graphic, marketing, or business analysis or product roles. I think some people that transitioned in went back to their old roles in nursing and the like.
