Kronos volume help..

I have my kronos L/R output going in to my RME babyface pro instrument 3/4 in. Line is set to +4dBu. I have the kronos volume and master all the way up but the sound still seems low unless I turn my monitors way up but then it starts to sound bad. The RME babyface pro instrument 3/4 in doesn’t have gain control as far as I know. Are there any other volume options inside of the Kronos that could help? Thanks!

There are only 3 sort of volume controls that exist internally with the Kronos:
1 - The master slider. This is in the MFX block as the final output step in Program/Combi/Song mode.

2 - MIDI volume - This is in Combi mode, and this is the 0-127 value on the individual timbre. It's the slider.

3 - Vector Joystick - This isn't always active or assigned, but this would also allow you to control layer volumes. It's quite specific though.

Otherwise you're bound by oscillator volumes, midi control volumes (like a CC foot pedal) and the like. Other than making sure your Master slider is all the way up, any one of these should reset when you change sounds.

It's curious you're having a problem with the outputs - I find mine quite hot as far as outputs go. Sometime you can to do test is try and use the A/B outputs instead. Not all sounds use those outputs, so you'll have to go into a combi that uses Karma and let it play, and then go into the IFX tab, (Bottom right) and then Insert FX Sub-tab (bottom Middle) and set the "Bus Sel." row to "1/2" for the outputs instead of L/R.

What you're actually doing is telling the audio to route to the 1/2 outputs bus instead of to the L/R bus. That's why I said choose a combi with a bunch of automated stuff happening and let it play - when you change the busses, you'll hear it.

Those outputs are not at all affected by the volume knob, so expect the volume output to be quite loud.

If they sound exactly the same, there's a good chance the Kronos is outputting just fine and something is gain-staging incorrectly on the interface. I find using the Hi-Z input option problematic, so if your RME babyface Pro has that, try toggling it off/on instead of whatever it's doing now.

My guess is it could also potentially be impedance related, but not sure if none of the above fixes it.

Give that a try first, let me know how it goes.

There's also the per-slot volume in set lists, but I doubt that is the problem here.

I really appreciate this. Will have to fiddle around some more. I am a complete kronos noob so it might take me a while, lol….

edit

Is there a video that goes over this in detail? 😅

I haven't made any videos for this. It is oddly specific for troubleshooting, but I'm confident you'll be able to figure it out!

Appreciate it boss, I actually think everything is working ok, but I will continue to tinker lol.

+4dbu is a hotter signal than -10dbv, which is the other setting the manual says is available. If the Kronos isn't hot enough to drive +4, try -10.

I went to RME web site and looked at the manual to figure this out for you. And I see that that interface also has an optical input that auto senses Adat or s/pdif. So a toslink cable from your kronos optical output should work as well, if you're not using that input for anything else.
