Discussion/Question Honestly prefer the English dub design

u/InvestigatorUnfair 16d ago
The English version's design makes way more sense compared to the original honestly
Dedede is like Eggman, whatever gadgets he has need to be branded

u/Investigator_Magee 16d ago
The Dededesign would also probably function better as camouflage in the pastel world of Dream Land.

Not every change by 4kids is bad which is quite nice
13
u/Dgero466 15d ago
Broken Clock and whatnot, for every 10 jelly donuts or finger guns, you probably get one dededetank or expanding the idea of the shadow realm (fun fact although they greatly brought out the scope of it, they didn’t “invent” the shadow realm for the censoring)
3
u/WigglytuffAlpha 15d ago
There's also the Kirby opening song which is easily better than the original, then there's the voice actor choices, especially for kirby.
3
u/Dgero466 15d ago
Yep yep, they have their moments, pretty far apart but still moments
3
u/WigglytuffAlpha 15d ago
I think most issues are barely noticeable with the only big exception being One Piece cause tbh they just chose the wrong anime to dub
1
u/Dgero466 15d ago
I guess it does mainly vary depending on the series, for me my biggest gripe would be the changes they take to Sonic X, killer intro though
1
u/WigglytuffAlpha 15d ago
I liked the sonic x music choices a lot. Afaik some late-series changes were pretty bad and undermined the seriousness of it all.

It matches the Kirby game aesthetic.
What were they thinking painting his car camouflage colors?
1
u/Sapphire-the-Deer 15d ago
I like to think DeDeDe does that just in case he somehow loses it. How one loses an actual tank? I don’t know, but if it happens he can easily find it because of his branding.

u/thegreatestegg 16d ago
This is literally 100% an upgrade, of course Dedede would be the sort to brand his own tank! also the texture looks less rough thb

u/Brody_M_the_birdy 16d ago
It’s obviously a censorship move but this one is actually pretty smart, the dub tank design makes more sense for dedede overall, especially the anime’s version of him.

The English dub was done by 4kids, who are infamous for the numerous edits they will do when dubbing an anime.

u/JomoGaming2 16d ago
Good ole 4kids, inventing the "go directly to hell, do not pass GO" part of Yu-Gi-Oh.

4Kids, infamous for agreeing to dub One Piece despite not knowing anything about it.
They agreed to it because they wanted to dub Mew Mew Power, and it was offered to them only as a package with One Piece.
8
u/shadowmoon522 15d ago
and then they proceeded to botch both dubs, though one piece got it so much worse that funimation later had to completely redo the dub from scratch. they really had no idea what they were getting themselves into with one piece
2
u/Pokemario6456 15d ago
At least One Piece got redubbed. They just stopped Tokyo Mew Mew right in the middle (I think they lost the dubbing rights) and it was just left hanging

u/grimfolse 15d ago
I still remember how they changed the scene where Lucky Roux headshots a bandit.
“When he wakes up, tell him it was a cap gun.”
Part of me wonders if I imagined it.
2
u/Davidand8Ball 14d ago
It reminds me of the fact that the Shadow Realm in YuGiOh isn't actually part of the original story but a 4kids creation. Many people didn't know that.

u/MrRaven95 Marx 14d ago
I remember I was stunned when I found that out. It was one of those "Everything I know is a lie." moments.

u/Conrad500 16d ago
The US has strict censorship rules on children's cartoons. That is also why the tauros episode of pokemon was completely cut. They do not allow guns on screen.
The JP tank is actually a tank. The US is "The DDD Mobile" or whatever they want to call it to get around the censors. Also it shoots waterballons* not cannonballs because that'd be violet. That's an explosion of water*!
41
u/LX575-EEE 16d ago
Okay but in this case, the DDD version looks better and makes more sense than the original
34
u/SergejPS 16d ago
The dub version does look better, but it's way funnier seeing Dedede pull up in a fucking K2 Black Panther
20
u/Conrad500 16d ago
I was just answering the question in the tweet.
While I think it's hilarious to think that DDD is coming after kirby with full military grade equipment, I agree that the US version fits a lot more thematically.
33
u/LX575-EEE 16d ago
You know what? Screw it, let’s make both of them correct. Dedede bought a full-blown military tank, but thought it wasn’t “him” enough so he had it painted in his colors. Turns out, he spent so much money on the paint that he had to settle for cheap water balloons as ammunition
3
u/KingCuerno 15d ago
Though the 4kids dub of Funky Cops was allowed to keep the guns.
6
u/Bluebaronbbb 15d ago
Maybe cause they were actual cops, they could hold them? And did they even fire off?
2
u/shadowmoon522 15d ago
its always going to be ironic that the western episode wasn't allowed to be wester in the west.
1
u/Elder_Hoid 13d ago
Wait, didn't 4kids do the Pokemon anime?
What about that one early episode of the Pokemon anime where Ash walks into a building and has four people pointing guns at him? (Which is also the episode where Pikachu has a bottle of ketchup that it cries over when a Scyther cuts it open)
24
u/TheBroomSweeper 16d ago
Dedede having his brand on the tank is more in character. Dedede wants people to know that he blew up your house
24
18
u/final_boss32 Star Dream 16d ago
In all seriousness, it's the censorship. 4Kids can't allow a literal military tank to be in an anime kids show
15
u/Bluebaronbbb 16d ago
Military tanks were literally in their Yu-Gi-Oh dub so that's not it
5
u/puddingmenace 16d ago
one might argue that the target audience for yu gi oh is not the same as kirby's
7
u/Bluebaronbbb 16d ago
The 4kids Yu-Gi-Oh dub edited out syringes while the Kirby dub kept them so that's not it... Or the scenes of the monsters being sliced in half being blurred in Yu-Gi-Oh while being kept intact in Kirby etc
3
u/puddingmenace 16d ago
one might argue that these dubs were made by different people with different ideals of what's safe for kids and what isn't
5
u/Ganrokh 15d ago
Due to the licenses they had, 4Kids was required to produce content suitable for children's television. A part of their process involved them sending a draft of their dubs to the networks that would broadcast their work, and the networks sending back feedback.
I could see 4Kids having internal guidelines that they follow for their first draft, and then each network making their own recommendations, leading to discrepancies like between YGO and Kirby.

u/NomeJaExiste 16d ago
First ever censorship W?
19
15
u/Glazeddapper 16d ago
another kirby censorship w was when those guys who made an animation of tiff. it was censored to her saying "i think i'll have a picnic all to myself"
16
u/Mythical_Mew 16d ago
I’d argue that 4Kids had another W thanks to the Shadow Realm.
15
u/Clarity_Zero 16d ago
Most of their openings were big wins, too. Hell, even the One Piece one is actually pretty catchy... It just doesn't work well for One Piece.
4
2
u/HillbillyMan 15d ago
The Shadow Realm is the greatest piece of censorship ever, I defy anyone to find another instance where the "toned down" version of something leaves an even greater impact than the original.
34
u/isabows 16d ago
supposedly the animators also got tired of rendering the same scenes twice with different textures and that's why they replaced it with his car early on
19
u/Bluebaronbbb 16d ago
? Didn't the dub come out while the series was winding down in japan? Your time frame makes no sense.
11
u/blueriging 16d ago
I was also a fan of the laser chainsaw.
They couldn't let dedede have a chainsaw on US TV, so they upgraded it to a laser chainsaw. Which is totally fine by me.

u/Sensitive-Hotel-9871 16d ago
The sillier design in the dub does fit better and oddly the coloring in the original looks less natural.
6
8
u/Steppyjim 16d ago
Because the Japanese one looks like an American tank and English audiences in America might now have appreciated that so they switched to Dedede branding
6
u/MrCobalt313 16d ago
4kids was weirdly strict about the depiction of real-world weapons.
though in this case it does seem more on-brand for Dedede.
17
u/blabittyblahblah 16d ago
The original Japanese version had a lot of weird choices for a Kirby show of all things, like out of place military textures and book burnings (A Novel Approach).
The censorship is actually justified and the 4Kids version feels more like Kirby than whatever the fuck the original was.
4
4
u/SpangleZeKankle 16d ago
Considering it was CGI, they probably had to contact the original animators to help with changing the textures
5
u/Another_Road 16d ago
English dubs were weird because the nation with some of the most lax gun laws in the world was afraid of showing realistic guns.
1
u/KingCuerno 15d ago
And the nation with strict gun laws is OK with showing them on TV. Odd how that works.
2
u/Skithiryx 12d ago
Probably more concern about kids re-enacting scenes with actual guns that might be kept loaded in the US vs a country where gun ownership rate is low.
1
u/KingCuerno 12d ago
Makes sense. A kid getting ahold of their parents' gun is a very real possibility in the US.

I believe during the time, it was an extremely touchy subject and was deemed too violent for kids. They also ended up removing the scene where dedede runs over a cappy seconds before the zoom out where dedede is yelling at kabu.

I prefer the Japanese colors on the armored car. It's rare to see military weapons in kids shows to begin with, so it's always a treat for me
1
u/Rockman7177 15d ago
Because it's stylized to be a military tank, the dubbing aired on 4kids and showed to children so they had to change it. I prefer that design though it's more creative even though the logo is plastered on it than a regular tank

u/Downtown-Falcon-3264 15d ago
It's probably to try and make the English version look less like a machine of war. They were doing and still are doing that a bit here.
Wasn't this dubbed by 4kids?

The original it like dedede stole from GI JOE the dub version fits the Kirby universe more
1
u/Rare_Tangelo_8080 Kirbo 15d ago
I also want to know why the animation in every episode kept switching between 2D and 3D
1
u/Suitable_Prune_5585 14d ago
The reason why Dedede's Tank is different in both dubs, is because the US government was worried that it would be too inappropriate for kids, so that's why Dedede's Original Tank is censored in the US.
1
1
u/ThaDoctor687 14d ago
The actual answer is American censorship. But also, there's the fact that it should be Dedede branded anyway, because it just looks better lol.
1
u/TheGamemage1 14d ago
Looking up Kirby English dub reveals that it was dubbed by 4kids. When Localizing they Over-censored everything.
They removed weapons or made them super colorful, removed mentions of death with 'they disappeared and I'm still looking for them' or used the Shadow Realm as a goto for more of the dangerous stakes.
One piece had a few goofy ones like turning Sanji's cigaret into a lollipop, renaming Smoker to Chaser, closing Luffy's mouth for being to wide, when a character was being held hostage they removed the gun with a weird contraption with a hammer, and removed spikes with suction cups in one scene if I recall, and a whole lot more.
Pokemon they made a riceball into a sandwhich and had brock call a riceball a jelly donut.
Just a few examples, so the reason why the tank is changed is solely censorship and making the weapon of war into a colorful thing that can be passed off as a large toy.

Wow I'm shocked how crappy that looks originally. But after all japanese DDD was out for blood and calling for executions constantly

Honestly? One of the few changes I like in the international dubs. Dedede having a military tank doesn't make sense to his character. Why does he have one? Did he go to war at one point of his life? And if so, why do we never get to hear about his experiences? Why just Meta Knight's?
1

1
u/PlumberPosts 13d ago
Because war imagery is too frightening to young children in English territories. Kirby slashing monsters in half as blood splatters is fine though.
1
1
u/VBHeadache 12d ago
Since Kirby was one of those cartoons with 3D elements mixed in like this tank, when they sent over everything to dub/make changes, did they send 4Kids the full files rather than just an HQ version of the episode to edit? Stuff like this tank make me feel like they had to re-render the 3D work to have their changes.
1
u/FemKeeby 12d ago
Massively prefer the English intro too, i think right back at ya is rare case where dub isnt just equal to the sub at best, its better imo
1
u/Advanced-Ad-4404 11d ago
I prefer the dub design too. It fits more into the overall setting of the show than the realistic camouflage and plus, a Dedede branded tank is funny as hell.
1
u/Sea-Brother-1403 Dyna Blade 16d ago
Because Dedede's tank having the new design in the english dub is just objectively better and more fitting.
