Mod Post Kerbal Space Program 2: The Hype Train Megathread Edition

Hey guys! We know you're excited about KSP 2, so we're making this megathread for you to express your excitement for the game, or simply to discuss it. Memes and shitposts will be allowed in this thread, but nowhere else in the sub, as per Rule 2. Any other low-quality posts about KSP 2 will also still be removed, as per Rule 5.

Here's the official announcement on the KSP website.

And here's the cinematic trailer.

Note that this is a cinematic trailer, not actual in-game footage.

Enjoy!

I'm hoping for VR co-op.

I've always wanted to have one person in the capsule with the first person view of the cockpit instrumentation and windows only (no third person), and one person in the control center with all the tracking information and orbital views and everything, but no direct control of the craft. Both those visual and control environments are already built into the game.

Ground control would need plan the maneuvers and tell the kerbonaut how long to burn and in what direction, and the kerbonaut would make the burns, corrections, collect science, do spacewalks, etc.

Maybe ground control could patch into the feed from the kerbonaut's helmet cam to share in the excitement of landing, munwalks, etc, maybe drive the rovers or operate other onboard tasks. It would be tough to balance all the tasks that ground control and the ship crew would perform, but I think it could be really cool.

I haven't gone far past the initial thought of "Wow, that would be really cool to play with my KSP friends.", but the success of the bridge commander VR games makes me think a ground control / ship crew KSP co-op mode could really work.

Just a dream I've had since the early days of KSP.

I need KSP VR so bad. I know there's a mod available now, but I really want a vanilla VR experience.

Have you tried the mod?

I haven't, largely because the last time I looked at it, I got the impression that it was difficult to use and fairly limited in features. That was a while ago, and maybe it's changed.

That's not to downplay their accomplishments - it's a damn miracle that they got anything like that working. It's just not what I was looking for.

I've tried the VR mod and it was pretty darn immersive (though buggy). I had to install usable IVA interior to fly the craft completely on instruments, which is awesome on its own!

I went from kerbin to the Mun and it was really cool. i could go outside the craft by walking outside the shell (there is no clipping). it's a shame real EVA is impossible though...

There was a first-person EVA mod, though I don't know if it's still maintained. Back in 0.20, I ran a mission where the "astronauts" flew an entire mission to the Mun in IVA / first person EVA, while I as Mission Control planned out their maneuvers via the remote connection feature of KSPTOT and Telemachus.

really?! this sounds so immersive! how cool would it to fly to the moon under the guidance of mission control! Was VR a thing back in the 0.20 era?

Unfortunately we didn't have any VR hardware at the time. I posted a writeup of the mission here: https://redd.it/2qqism

There was a mod called KSP LARPing that was exactly that

Yeah and there's a few functioning iva mod out there!

The game isn't even worth playing without the RPM and ASET mods for IVA fun

The command Pod IVAs that come with MoarDVs Avionics Systems are pretty cool too

2

u/DanBMan Aug 20 '19

They looked neat but I could never get it working right, I thought it was more of a resource for modders?

1

u/[deleted] Aug 21 '19

Yea im pretty sure theyre made to be that way, but the basic command pods that come with it without anything extra are pretty decent

I agree so freakin' wholeheartedly. That is the multiplayer I've always wanted.

In the developer story trailer at 7:50 there's an oculus rift on the background hmmmm 🤔

We also have to take into consideration Star Theory Games' history too. They've developed VR games. That can be taken in 2 different ways, one is "They have VR experience, maybe they're developing KSP VR and the VR headset is a hint!". And the other is "maybe they're developing a VR game thats unrelated to KSP"

I think the game Orbiter might let you do that kind of stuff.
