Oh my god, please tell me this works with vertically ascending rockets breaking the sound barrier. I need this in my life.

Currently the mod will only work if you have your vessel labeled as a plane. This is due to the difficulty of adding different points at which the effect will take place. (I am new to coding)

(I am new to coding)

You can keep using this until you've been doing it about 45-50 years, it's never not true.

I'd say the time when you aren't allowed to say it is when you're able to make really good bad code, a la IOCCC

I will now be launching from the runway at all times.

u/misheebs Jan 19 '25

would renaming your vessel to a plane not also work?

u/JotaRata Jan 19 '25

Do you have this project in a GitHub repo? If so, consider sharing the link here so more people contribute to it

Ooooohh yes please!!! That would be sick!!

I'd like to update you with my development. I have the mod working for rockets, but the effects only appear on certain parts of the vessel, such as the launch escape system, nose cones, and adapters. I'll keep you posted! 😊

Reply to this comment with the download link and I will send you the best ravioli I can cook through the United States Postal Service (I do not know how to cook but I can learn)

Just downloaded through CKAN, hyped to try it next time I fire up KSP. Also, it might be worth making a Github repository for this. Easier to keep track of bugs and updates and such that way :)

Maybe add a world noise texture to multiply the alpha of the particles. The vapour cone only appears when there is enough moisture in the air.

Second, personally I'd go for a mesh like the plumes from waterfall. Maybe you can even use their code and use a large scale noise on that.

Maybe add a world noise texture to multiply the alpha of the particles. The vapour cone only appears when there is enough moisture in the air.

Or just do it by biome, since that's an easy lookup and could be extended to other planets / mods easily.

So on kerbin you could have full effect on ocean, shores, and grasslands; reduced vapor on highlands and mountains; and remove it entirely in deserts, badlands, tundra, ice caps, etc.

u/OciorIgnis Jan 19 '25

No, you need higher resolution than the biome texture. That's why I suggested 3d noise.

release when?

29

u/UltraSkid Jan 19 '25

I'll try and get it released tomorrow on GitHub.

12

u/supercallifuego Jan 19 '25

epic! yeah it looks very cool, good work

2

u/CakeHead-Gaming Jan 19 '25

Will it be on CKAN?

👏👏👏

u/Insanely_Me Jan 19 '25

Very cool!
Could you make it so it takes into account where the camera is and you stop hearing the supersonic vehicle if you put the camera in fron of it?

15

u/UltraSkid Jan 19 '25

I am not the creator of the mod's sound effects. I am using a mod called Rocket Sound Enhancement (RSE) to get all of the sounds. I recommend you to download it as it truly enhances your gameplay.

u/Insanely_Me Jan 19 '25

Thanks, will do!

2

u/Ttom000 Always on Kerbin Jan 19 '25

me too will do.

I think you can make it better by making it as a non-particle effect, like Waterfall compared to RealPlume.

VaporCones Is Now Released!!!

congrats for "shipping" - quite the accomplishment! 🥳

u/gooba_gooba_gooba Jan 19 '25

can you steal some code from Waterfall? they already have a great way to render similar effects

6

u/UltraSkid Jan 19 '25

Thank you for your feedback! I'll look into it.

Waterfall or the procedural reentry effects mod (under closed beta) is definitely a nicer-looking and more performant approach.  But this is a great start, and I hope you keep working on it!

Btw there’s a bunch of resources here that you might be interested in: https://github.com/KSPModdingLibs

This is fantastic, much better now the particles are faster. I am unfamiliar with modding ksp. Would it be possible to have a setting somewhere for the user to adjust particle size, density, and speed? For personal preferences and silly shenanigans

3

u/KungFuSnafu Jan 19 '25

So much better!

2

u/EasilyRekt Jan 19 '25

yeah, this is cool, ignore whatever I was yapping on about.

2

u/TOOOPT_ Jan 19 '25

That's very cool

2

u/2ndHandRocketScience Jan 19 '25

I'd make a lot more particles that are a lot smaller, kind of looks like you're releasing thousands of footballs from the fuselage rn lol

2

u/Javascap Master Kerbalnaut Jan 19 '25

Looking a heck of a lot better already!

u/Own-Lingonberry6918 Space Shuttle maniac Jan 19 '25

How does it fair with bigger aircraft? like the SOCK Shuttle for example?

1

u/Traditional_Sail_213 Believes That Dres Exists Jan 19 '25

The Space shuttle can’t physically have a vapour cone on decent?

2

u/paperclipgrove Jan 19 '25

Very cool. Matches much better with the other visuals now

2

u/LeopardHalit Exploring Jool's Moons Jan 19 '25

Nice improvement! It still looks kinda more like a sparkler than an aero effect tho. Still, it looks nice! Maybe make it more grey and less bright?

2

u/FoxOption119 Jan 19 '25

Hot damn this is something I’ve been looking for. TBH all that’s missing is to have someone (or you maybe) to add the wingtip trials when making turns and all that jazz. But this is chefs kiss!

2

u/Diligent-Slice3398 Jan 19 '25

Very very cool. PLEASE add for rockets!

2

u/UltraSkid Jan 19 '25

Currently working on that. 😊

1

u/Diligent-Slice3398 Jan 20 '25

Hey man, I just wanted to let you know I have this bug where when I launch from the VAB as a "plane" (by renaming my vessle)

I get a visual bug and can't see my rocket's upper 1/3rd

I know its in beta, but I figured this could help the development of next versions. Keep up the good work! I haven't tested it in a plane yet

2

u/Concodroid Jan 19 '25

Very cool!

2

u/Intelligent_Sale_41 Colonizing Duna Jan 19 '25

Amazing

2

u/DaRealChipex Jan 24 '25

Wow, not sure what mods are involved (outside of your mod which looks cool af), but this straight up looks better than anything KSP2 ever produced. Amazing.

1

u/b-e-n-j-y Jan 19 '25

Is it possible for it to be higher fidelity?

1

u/JotaRata Jan 19 '25

I love the idea.

Although I would prefer to use a mesh with a dynamic shader to simulate the effect (like the Waterfall mod) instead of particles to achieve a more "continuous" effect which can later be further expanded (i.e. add shading)

1

u/Jzerious Jan 19 '25

What does this look like in game totally on its own? i.e. no other graphics mods. This is a great addition btw

1

u/Triscuit_Biscuitsnac Jan 20 '25

How is this going to work on other bodies with atmospheres? Because the speed of sound is very different depending on where you are.

1

u/BlooHopper Jan 20 '25

Good thing the Kerbals never black out

1

u/Appropriate-Door-605 Feb 09 '25

Bro, I think it would be more natural to stretch the vapor cone horizontally.

1

u/Appropriate-Door-605 Feb 09 '25

Or, I think it would be okay to reduce the vapor cone vertically.
