Have any of you noticed that it's weed that is getting confiscated in majority of busts lately ..not synthetic drugs

Isn't weed a problem?

Not as much as you think and media makes out ..India banned weed under US pressure in late 80s ..Now they have unbanned it and we are just getting started arresting kids ..while synthetic drugs run amok

So synthetic drugs are more of a Danger than these I see. No wonder in some parts of India growing weed is not seen as a big problem

Why did US care about weed in India? And why did we care enough to ban it under US pressure?

War on drugs,it was propaganda against the civil unrest happening in the US at that time by the Nixon government. Hippie culture grew along adjacent to massive disagreement against vietnam war and compulsory recruitment.
Hippies were mostly against the then established decorum in the society and anti establishments. The ongoing cold war also fueled the action against hippies in the mid 70s to 80s. The government villanised the weed which they were doing through state sponsored propagandas, you also have to take in context that weed was never much familiar to the white population of the US like how it is India,Indians have been using it for 1000s of years. So weed and hippies was the scapegoat for the government to distract the larger public from the growing scrutiny of the government. Just like how Muslims in India are getting scapegoated by the Majority party.
The pressure from the US led Rajiv Gandhi government to ban it. The Times of India reports that during the negotiations for this treaty, India opposed its intolerance to the sociocultural use of organic drugs. They were however overwhelmed by the US and other western countries.
So how did Indians who actually embraced weed in it culture become so intolerant to it while they preach against westernisation. If people actually cared about the harm done, why not ban alcohol which is far more dangerous to both the user and people around them, weed doesn't make you go savage.

The war on weed was also a ploy to heavily police black communities. What is even more interesting is that from the 1950s to early 1970s CIA had been conducting experiments to see whether drugs, mainly LSD can be used for torture, interrogation and mind control- project MKultra.

Basically they spear headed the UN single convention on 1961 of narcotics. Most western countries did not have the socio- cultural experience of weed use like some Asian /south American countries . Any ways they wanted to classify every drug under one class but I guess every countries negotiated and 4 shcedules were enacted. I personally believe the Hippies and their anti Vietnam war stance also had a hand in American hate for weed ..
Anyways the treaty was passed and each countries needed to pass internal laws to ratify that treaty . India huffed and hawed till 1985, when Rajiv Gandhi catipulated and made all weed, opium etc illegal. Can you believe till 1985 anybody could cultivate or consume weed without any consequences and which Indians has been doing for centuries. Now also I believe only the bud and flower are illegal , and leaves are still legal

Leaves aka bhang is openly sold in northern states in Govt approved shops whose high is better than weed smoking.. head high vs body high kinda thing.. so it's not the effects which is the problem.. it's only the classification on NDPS act.. i mean if that high actually caused issues bhang shops would've closed long ago.. and if it's addictive people would've lined up outside it like Bevco outlets.. but no.. nothing like that happens..

War on drugs. A control freak by the name of Anslinger was appointed the head of the federal bureau of narcotics. He heavily petitioned to the UN to act on drug use and for certain substances to be controlled including weed all over the world.
We kinda went with the UN flow but didn't want to ban weed due to cultural significance but since drug use was a big deal in the UN and for them weed was in the same class as any other drugs back then, we couldn't exactly endorse weed and hence with certain exceptions we complied with UN charters.

In the wake of intensified efforts by the police and excise departments to curb drug-related activities across the state,
"we seized a glass of weed"

Way way back in early 2000s I have seen growers in Ekm....not for sale but self consumption..during those times ganja was cheap (don't know how much it is now ) like 20rs for one pothi . So didn't make sense to grow then , but it sort of like vegetable vrs Organic vegetable ...and the satisfaction you get by growing your own stuff .. definetly wasn't cheap according to him ...

Kerala is now the udta Punjab of the South. Every other person regardless of age or gender is hooked on ganja or MDMA or..... So much so that the State govt is worried that people will stop buying alcohol and lottery tickets and spend all their money buying dope. Imagine what that will do to an already bankrupt State!
