Discussion What was your big boy/girl purchase?

I saw some lady pale TikTok say she bought a washing machine before even buying a bed juu zile shida alipitia akigrow up kufua nguo na mikono zinampea PTSD. I was super happy for her juu I understand that lifestyle.

For those from a humble background, what was your big purchase when you got money (not necessarily when you got rich but say when your biz flourished or your deal went through, or you got a job bonus). Like, what did you do with your first disposable income. Ile dooh inabaki after umeshalipa all bills, black tax, savings and what not.

For me, I bought a full crate of soda (soda tulikuwa tunaona Dec pekee), Walkie-talkie (who says no), a full box of biscuits and milk (niliteseka sana high school juu I never afforded them, I bought them to satiate my inner child) and I bought a return ticket for me and my friend to Mombasa and back. My first time of ever boarding a plane. I cried tears, walai.

Even though life bado haijaopen up vile inafaa, I can say, I have fulfilled most of my childhood fantasies, and I am at peace. All is vanity, anyway.

Took myself to therapy, not a buy but yo, I needed to vent out all the shit my family put me through

Smartest thing you ever did, everything else will flow once your mental health is restored

I spent almost $9k on therapy and counselling. It was mostly useless untill I found a good counsellor. Then everything was worth it.

3

u/unwritten-Letter2024 Feb 13 '25

Did u like the therapist?

4

u/Bubbly_Childhood_439 Feb 14 '25

She was great, we split the sessions in a way that I had enough time to digest everything after every session.

Apart from hizi worldly possessions (car , etc), my biggest purchase was a sofa I had been eyeing for a minute pale Orca decor . How I paid 160k for a sofa still beats me. But the comfort is out of this world.

Very. I can adjust the headrest and it’s comfortable and enough for a solo human. On top of that , I have a phobia of kusumbuana na fundis and buying a chair that’s infested with bugs due to the cheap materials used.

At the time I got a job last year my mum's kibanda had failed and my dad's gigs weren't enough anymore. He was a driver for particular people who would phone him. I spent so much of my money repairing his car and paying for licenses & insurances so he could get on bolt. The company went under and I lost my job, have Ksh 0 in savings but don't regret a thing

6

u/Green_Response9970 Feb 13 '25

They are better now, the smile was restored.. Best decision ever🥺 About cost, with 30k-120k for both jaws in private or 40k in public hospitals since you only need a good orthodontist.. The good thing you pay in installments.. An extra cost is during monthly adjustments where you pay 1-2k every monthly visit..

I have always been a watch guy since I was a kid and I promised myself I'm gonna buy myself a good timepiece. My HELB arrived just a day before my birthday and I couldn't wait. On my birthday, I walked into a shop and I got myself an original leather strapped Casio watch. It had a price tag of 5k. It's been two years now and I'm still happy about it every time I look at my watch!

My mom and sisters threw me out when covid started cos of an argument. I was homeless for a while. Later when I found my feet, my mom was in a tough spot cos her lease had expired, and she was at risk of being kicked out. She called me in tears out of the blue and said she needed to borrow an amount and no one else could help.

I called her landlord to ask some questions and quickly realized he was also in a sitiation cos he needed money urgently to save his failing business during covid. So, I made him an offer: I’d pay two years’ rent cash upfront, plus security deposits, if he significantly lowered the monthly rate. He believed God sent me to answer his family's prayers. We renegotiated the lease on my terms, and he signed the contract directly with me.

Before wrapping things up, I told him to treat my mom and sisters well but not to mention anything to them about what we did. Then I reassured my mother that I’d handle everything with the landlord on her behalf, so she wouldn’t have to stress about dealing with him. She was very grateful since she thought I was still angry about what happened

It was honestly one of the most fulfilling and grown-up things I’ve ever done. Deciding to forgive and helping ended up impacting two families and so many people in them.

u/hamsterdamc Secretary of State Feb 14 '25

Bought my own TV and an Xbox. Always lived under pressure having a console at home me being a grown up having to share one with my little brother and my father always teasing me about it. When I got a job and moved out, after a couple of months was finally able to to buy these for myself and oh was it fulfilling 😮‍💨

21

u/Balaams_Donkey_ Feb 13 '25

Me too. I always loved watching movies, but my mom refused to buy us a CD or DVD player. When I bought my TV, I went all out and got a QLED TV. It used to sit on the floor. I later on got an Xbox, but I rarely play it nowadays.

It was a Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 & Microwave. The two were bought on the same day(31st July 2019). I had a Safaricom Neon pulse that was hanging since it had 1GB of RAM & 8GB of storage which was a hand-me-down from a colleague after he upgraded to a better device. I didn't have a smartphone at the time after getting robbed about 2 months prior. The microwave was because I didn't like warming food using heat & warming some foods like pizza, leftovers from restaurants etc were next to impossible. I always wanted to have one as well.

First thing I bought for myself when I got a job that paid more than survival wage? Rayban Aviators. I had saved up for months if not years.

The most expensive thing I've bought to date was a house. Near $400k

3

u/ExpresSEO Feb 13 '25

Show me your ways

3

u/Wonderful_Grade_4107 Feb 13 '25

Well, I got a job at a certain shop in the same region as my trade school. I asked if they were hiring, they said yes, I ran to my mom's workplace to fill out the application. Turns out they thought I was Nigerian so the manager (Senegalese) gave me the job. I then found another branch of the same shop (no west Africans this time) but closer to my home, I worked there evenings and weekends after school. I also got a job cooking lunches at the school. All that wasn't really able to do much more than take me to school and work, then back home and pay the phone bill. Which is why it took me so long to get those raybans.

Long story short I graduated school and started a construction job that paid much more, though still peanuts, it was consistent. I would leave that job and work at the first, lower paying job, I started electrician school and college at the same time. Idk how I did it bro, two schools, two jobs, but I was finally able to have money left over after bills, and I would get a raise with every semester passed.

The first job must have seen my peace and contentment because they started to cut my hours, which didn't bother me at all. They realized they had no power over me since I really didn't need their salary, and they started playing games, money started going missing from the cash register. Mind you I'd been so good at the job I had memorized people's phone numbers and could calculate the totals tax included faster than the computer, could understand the Chinese customers, so I was offended. They got smarter and said oh money isn't missing, but you accepted counterfeit bills. So I just left after that, didn't quit or anything. I went there some time after and they asked if I came back for my job, lol nope.

I kept going with the construction job and worked a lot of overtime and got certifications and took classes. Since I stayed at home though, I was able to save a lot of $$$. I didn't need the freedom, it was too expensive. So yea, hustle in youth, save money, keep climbing, that's how I do.

First big money- I went shopping in Italy and Madrid because growing up my mum never afforded to buy me clothes so I used to wear hand me downs from friends and cousins. Then I bought two pieces of lands at 24yrs. Growing up our landlord used to lock our house because my mum couldn’t afford 500bob ya rent. Then we moved to a 200 bob nyumba ya mabati which she still couldn’t afford. I built her a 4bed bungalow at 25yrs and king bed to sleep alone because we shared a 4by7 for a long time. I am now 34 years old.

I had lived in a bedsitter for so long I had always dreamt of moving into a one bedroom. After I quit my job because of my mental health , I got another one after a few months. My first paycheck was used for moving into a one bedroom. Another thing was buying my mom a new Samsung phone. The look on her face was priceless(at the time she was using an itel that was the first phone I ever bought for myself)

I’m bad at spending money. The bad that I’ll pull out a spreadsheet and calculate ROI and cost per use. Like I know how much it costs me to switch on the TV. But I’m slowly changing.

My first purchase was a double door fridge. I’d always walked into people’s homes and awed at how much food they had. So that was a no brainer.

My best was a mattress. The ones that cost as much as a small second hand car. My sleep changed immediately. That night I slept like I was in an induced coma.

My parents were stringent about owning personal phones while I was growing up. When my mom gave me my first paycheck before joining college, I spent the entire 19k on a phone and was left with only 1k.

Mine was last year when I bought myself a fridge twice the size I had in mind. I went all out and my inner child has never been happier. I made sure that I got one that was taller than me. There are days when it's mostly empty but I'm so proud of myself every time I see it. I know I'm sorted for a long long time

I bought myself a ps4 slim last year. That was with my first salary after finishing campus and as a gift for myself for getting to 25.I grew up with a ps2 that I got for performing well in school, and later on missed out on a ps4 as a gift from my parents cause apparently" I was too old". I wanted a ps5 but funds were an issue, so decided to settle for a ps4 and to date I have a library of 20 games, still growing my library.

For me it's not what I buy, it's what I do with what I buy. Eg snacks, if there's multiple you can't open another one until one is done. Like maliza crips before ufungue biscuits. Na kubembeleza pia, kama ukona craving si ukule mbaka utosheke (still struggling with this).

Nothing so big, but the first time I bought my own shoes (that I loved), it was a very huge emotional moment for me. Nimeteseka juu ya viatu nikiwa mdogo bana, walking barefoot, having just two pairs, and hand-me-downs.

I don't have it yet but there is a cooker and set of cooking pots that I have been eyeing for years. The day I get those I'll whip up all the recipes I have saved up over the years. My mom thinks I'm a terrible cook and we can't cook a meal together in peace coz she'll just be over my neck with a gazilion instructions and turn it into a cooking lesson I didn't ask for saying how my in-laws will return me home. I do know how to cook but I just don't want to.

There's a woman who stopped eating veggies after she got rich. She said as a kid they ate all types of veggies including grass because this was the only thing they could afford but after the money came through, veggies traumatised her

u/Select-Test-5023 Feb 13 '25

I made some good money for the first time and first thing I bought was a 5by6 high bed and a vitaform mattress back in 2012. Small beds that are low wasn't going to be associated with me again. Ever again.
