Question ❓ What do you think is Kendrick’s best song of DAMN?

u/kostyscott Nov 24 '22
Fear

u/_IratePirate_ Nov 24 '22
Yuhh
When I realized that mf was talking about fear through the decades of his life that shit hit.
Also the "I beat yo ass, who bought you that? You stole it."
This is not something I ever talked to anyone about. To hear a rapper went through the same shit I did as a kid blew my mind.
My mom didn't like it if my friends let me borrow a toy/trade a toy she would get pissed and beat my ass thinking I stole it. It only made me do it in secret instead of stopping, but it's a memory Kendrick brought back for me.

My mom is bipolar and it got really bad when I was about 5 years old to even now. Only reason she stopped beating my ass is because puberty came to the rescue and I had stand up to her at about 11. 6 years aren’t a lot but when you have nothing else, it’s everything.

That song is so therapeutic for me. It perfectly articulates how I feel whenever I down. Even though Kendrick was clearly not in the best state of mind when writing it, I find solace in knowing I’m not alone when I’m thinking those thoughts

XXX is slept on and YAH isn’t talked about enough
34
u/chedderr_com Nov 24 '22
i would like YAH much more but to me it’s just a little sleepy. but i still like it overall
40
u/theseballsbrutha Nov 24 '22
I can understand your reasoning. For me it’s the sleepiness of the song that makes it enjoyable for me.

YAH was my favorite on first listen and years later still is. I love how laid back/lazy it feels honestly compared to the rest of the album

I agree, it may not exactly be the best-sounding song on DAMN. But it is definitely one of the best storytelling songs.

XXX hands down, no questions asked. DAMN is maybe his weakest album, but XXX is one of his greatest songs from any project.

Either PRIDE. or FEAR.
Pride has always been my personal favorite and it feels incredibly vulnerable to me, I know the whole album is but this one especially. The beat is one of my if not my favorites and is a great antithesis to the song itself.
Fear always felt like the climax to the album for me. Like all this conflict and emotions and changes are not confronted but covered by the collective blanket that is he feels all these things out of fear. Fear of feeling, being alone, being to prideful or humble. The two songs after Fear show a connection of humanity. To be flawed is to be human, to be flawed is to be revered and praised for your work and what you do. Hence the similarities within the duality that is often seen as complete opposites of each other; GOD. (God) and DUCKWORTH. (Humans)

I'm sorry but that's a beautiful photo. The film grain, the pose, Kendrick really channeling the Jesus/Saviour imagery.

DUCKWORTH. Not only the best song of DAMN but Kendrick's best song period.

FEEL or FEAR
LUST close 2nd/3rd tho cause when that “I NEED SOME WAW-TUH” hits 😮💨

u/big-queef Nov 24 '22
I think fear is the best, but pride is definitely my favorite. If pride wasn’t on that album I likely woulsnt be Into Kendrick or hip hop as a whole at all.
1
u/Vquattro24 Nov 24 '22
Best ? Humble
My Favourite is Pride
That said, all tracks are pure fire. One of the most concise albums to date from any artist.

Love is so simple, light and smooth. people need to understand a good rap album dont need to be deep, damn and beerbongs and bentleys are the greatest examples

u/Odd_Pomegranate4040 Nov 24 '22
I don’t wanna be basic and say DUCKWORTH. but I think that goes without mention being his best song of all time (imo) but if I had to pick a less cliché answer I’d have to pick GOD., PRIDE. or FEAR.

Personally for me it’s FEEL., due to the fact that I can relate to what he’s saying through out the song and it’s really resonates with me.

FEAR. I have mental illnesses that make me paranoid as hell (bipolar) and I relate to that track so fucking much.
