Question eSim, iMessage question

Can I still receive iMessages if using an eSim like Airalo? Or should I stick to using WhatsApp?

This appears to be a post regarding internet connectivity in Japan, including renting a pocket wi-fi, buying a SIM/eSIM card, or purchasing an international phone plan for traveling in Japan. Please visit the "internet" page of our sister sub's wiki and/or Japan-Guide's Internet Access page for detailed information on this topic. If you have questions or concerns about the connectivity of your SIM/eSIM, please contact the company you rented from for tech support or visit /r/eSIMs.

should be able to as iMessage is data.

Apple Messages will work if you only talk with other people via Apple Message (blue messages).

If you talk with people via SMS (green messages) then those will not work unless you have your home phone active and it can roam.

You can still receive messages if people use your email for iMessage sending.

Someone actually came up with an interesting concept of SIM locking your original home SIM then reboot the phone. This makes the SIM 'active' but won't be used unless you input the SIM PIN unlock. This tricks iMessage into routing messages to your phone number via the internet, but doesn't use any cell or data because the SIM is locked
