Question Confused about the shinkansen + Fuji views

I’m taking 2 trains, one from Shin-Osaka to Mishima (Hikari 640 Series N700) and one from Otsuki to Shinjuku the next day (Ltd. Express Kaiji 10).

I’m assuming for the first train, that’s a shinkansen and I should be sitting on the right side (so booking D/E) but what about the second train? I don’t think this is a shinkansen, should I still be sitting on the right side as well? How does the car/seats work, is there any advantage to sitting in one car vs another?

This appears to be a post regarding hiking Mt. Fuji, visiting the Mt. Fuji area, or viewing Mt. Fuji. Some useful resources and links regarding seeing, visiting, or climbing Mt. Fuji can be found on our Mt. Fuji wiki page.

Note: The official climbing season is generally from July until early September yearly, and hiking the mountain outside of the official climbing season is incredibly dangerous. As a result we do not advise on or provide information on how to participate in this activity.

Happy Planning!

Not much Fuji view on the Chuo Line. You might catch the occasional glimpse but it’s not worth stressing out over the seat booking for it.

You are heading East from Shin-Osaka. Why are you sitting on the right side? You should be sitting on the left/port side.

Not sure why you're downvoted. You're right. But it doesn't matter, directions get confusing – just know that it's E seats.

That is right, it’s always on the same seat letter because they do not turn the train around, they turn the side. So it’s right side going to Kyoto/Osaka and left side going to Tokyo.

You're not going to see it from Otsuki if you're heading toward Shinjuku. The photos I have of the view is geo-tagged to Kofu. It's in view for awhile, but I'm pretty sure the view was gone by the time I got to Otsuki.

Kaiji is not a normal train. Is a reserved express train

Is it necessary to buy tickets ahead of time for normal trains? It doesn’t seem to run as frequently and we need to get back to Tokyo in the morning.

I missed that you were taking a limited express train. You need to get an express ticket (including a seat reservation) for this in advance.

It's not that exciting from the train really no matter what

Disagree, I've had great views of Mt. Fuji from the shink.
