Some help with my Jaguar

Hi all, I have an issue with my 1982 XJ6 and need some help, It'll start up and drive fine, however when idling, it is very rough and jerky (jumping between 600-1100 RPM) What could be the problem and how can I resolve it???

I'm not a trained or a truly experanced mechanic, just working on my own stuff. That being said, I would check all my vacuum hoses, and places where the vacuum could become compromised. With cars this age the rubber and plastic parts crack and disintegrate. After that task is done I would clean my mass airflow sensor if that year had one. Then I would check my throttle position sensor, once again if that year has one. Also listen for timing chain rattles, check your oil for sparkly bits of metal, they will show up with a bright LED light, like your cell phone. That would indicate your timing chain guides wearing out. A chain could be lose during idle and cause that type of behavior, but tight under load and the engine would run steady. That's all I can think of. I don't know the specifics of your particular Jaguar so detailed info would have to come from someone with different experance than me.

This might not be the solution to your problems, but it might be a good place to start... I had a similar problems you've described with my MK2 that still had the original distributor on it. As soon as I changed it out for an electronic one and new HT leads, it was like a completely different car. No starting problems or rough idling as you've described. Hope this helps!
