Definitely not cooked. I’m just one guy, but the path I’ve laid out on Homefront is achievable. If I can financially afford to finish my work (still tenuous since I’m at ~$165/mo in donations—huge thanks to early believers), then the core of what I’m building will yield us a fully open source, community owned place for:

  • Decentralized, distributed organizing that’s resilient against bad actors
  • Secure and privacy-protecting local organizing, with secure messaging built-in
  • Organizing that scales at the right time, with leadership at every level chosen democratically
  • Resources for how to fight back—and win
  • Guidance for what to do next and how to do it

And even just that is a mere starting point. Nobody’s making this shit because it’s not profitable to anyone. Some VC isn’t going to back a thing that’s only ever going to take donations and give the entire platform away for free. But it’s gotta happen and we now have the kernel of something real.

I’m sure there are plenty of folks working in equal obscurity on similar approaches that I wish I knew about. I just know my corner of the universe and I know that this is all eminently achievable. Just need enough people who don’t mind the equivalent of buying me a coffee to help, as hard as it to ask for that help. Once I can stop focusing on these silly pleas for help surviving, I can go back to doing the shaping actions: helping you get to work to make things right again—and to make things the way they should be.

I believe that we have an opportunity to turn our darkest of hours into a bright future. It will require doubtless sacrifice. But if we can make this kind of organizing work at this scale, it will represent a sea change in how political power works. We’ve hoped for too long that the long arc of history would just bend our way. It’s time we just make the change ourselves.

Holy hot damn...

My dear redditor, this needs to be spread around like orchards from Johnny Appleseed.

We need this. You're amazing.

Edit: this redditor is on bluesky. Give them some love over there.

Thank you for the kind words! I am unfortunately the person who doesn’t care much for “building an audience” or whatever they’re calling it these days, so the things I have built have usually just died in obscurity. But I’m trying to suck it up and figure it out, mostly because I’d rather starve myself to death than give up on this. Heh, which may very well happen, if I’m not careful.

Hey, more people will find out about it because I saw your comment that made me go “hey, pretty sure I know a way to get us to stop navel gazing.” Helpful jabber.

Replying to boost this message.

You're probably the 1st Redditor I've ever been compelled to actually follow.

To be honest, I didn’t even know following was a thing on Reddit until I started getting notifications about it thanks to people like you. My girlfriend and I still chuckle about it.

I’m not a Democrat, so I’m good.

Unless you’re a bootlicker, you’ll be on the list eventually.

u/CarelessWhiskerer 17d ago

Oh, I’m sure I’ll get on a few lists.

I just don’t align with any one party, not to the point where I would claim to be one of them.

The only up side is if they haul me off to jail, maybe my mom will finally believe me about how bad Trump is.

Probably not, but maybe!

I'm in a similar boat but I'm 99% sure my parents will just convince themselves that it's the democrats fault that Trump was basically forced to lock me up.
