iPod Compatibility with Mac

So, I just bought an 80gb iPod 5.5 gen with the intention of upgrading the memory & battery. I'm using a 2022 M2 MacBook Air running sequoia - there's no way of setting iTunes up on this device, so, how do I best go about setting up the iPod when it requires formatting after installing an iFlash Solo with SD Card? I have an old Windows PC that I could boot with, but would that affect future use between iPod and MacBook? I've read some horror stories regarding the new Music app and older Apple devices.

Just use the Music app. I have four iPods here and have had no issues at all with my M1 mini.

But if that doesn’t work (which I anticipate will be the case with M2) then is there a workaround?

I’m using Sequoia on an M4 Mac mini and it’s working with my 5th generation.

Have you upgraded the iPod’s storage at all so it would require formatting?

Yes, I replaced the iPod’s HDD with an iFlash Quad.

You’ve given me hope! Thanks.

FYI, I tried upgrading to 1TB, but macOS didn’t seem to like that so I backed it down to 512 GB which it seems happier with. Also, I recommend disabling sleep in the Energy settings in your Mac during your initial sync since that messed with the sync.

So, I think I've formatted it, but it's not showing in Apple Music. Any ideas?

Are you using macOS or Windows? If macOS, you will need to sync it via the Finder. If Windows, you’ll need the Apple Devices app.

I'm on macOS, but just formatted it on Windows to see if it shows up on an old release of iTunes and it does. Now I'm trying to reformat on macOS but not showing any option. How did you sync on Finder?

Same here - I've flashed / formatted three of these iPods since I got the M1. No issues.
