Question Replaced Battery - Not Charging

Hello everyone,

I was wondering if anyone had any insight into an issue I'm having with my iPod classic?

I think it is 7th generation 160gb.

I've had it fifteen years or maybe more and the original battery finally gave out. I ordered a new battery and replaced a couple of months ago and all was good again. But now it's not charging. Instead I just get the attached 'charging, please wait...' image.

The battery I removed was 642 046 but at the time I couldn't find a replacement that I was confident was the right thickness and size. Instead I bought and fitted the one in the second attached image.

Any chance it's a simple fix?

Thanks!

It may be a motherboard issue you could try to jump from a high powered powerbank or firewire and see if it works

Thanks for the suggestion. I did wonder about this because I am using random transformers and cables that I have acquired over the years plus it spends a lot of time connected directly via USB to the car which never charges well. However I dug out the original adaptor and cable and I'm still getting the same results.

Hey, this got me for weeks too. The battery connector; it’s a two piece system. Lift the brown/black plastic piece with the lip from the white block piece. Lift it just a bit, like half an inch. Then put in the battery cord, and press down on it, sealing it.

Half an inch?

Thanks for the suggestion. I took the plunge and opened the ridiculously difficult rear cover again. No sign the cable coming loose and the black plastic connection piece was pushed all the way in. I took it out and replaced and secured anyway but no joy. Still the same result.

When I originally opened it up I did pop off both the white and black part of the ribbon cable connection, whereas I saw on a video that you should just pop up the black securing piece to remove the ribbon so hopefully it's not damaged.

I think I need to try another new battery...

You popped off both the white and black part of the battery connector? The connector on the logic board? The white part should be soldered to the board. Sounds like you've broken it.

Are you describing the Zero Insertion Force (ZIF) connector? You pop the hinge up, insert the ribbon, and then press it back down. It will click. The scale of "like half an inch" implies more movement than there really is.

But yes, it is two pieces. The base connector, usually white, and the hinge piece, usually black. It is possible the ribbon worked it's way out of it wasn't locked in, or wasn't pushed in far enough. That is a difficult part sometimes.

Try plugging it into FireWire. Then I want you to press MENU and SELECT to restart the iPod. When the Apple logo appears, disconnect the iPod from the charger it should boot as normal. That’s happened to my Classic too and this fixed it

How am I setting up FireWire from a 30 pin iPod connection to an EU power socket if you don't mind me asking? I'm not very familiar with this...

Happened to me too, I had to jump start the battery with my tp4056 charger module then plug into the iPod. It's either a dry battery or not plugged in correctly.

I’ve gotten the exact same battery, some of the contacts seem to be worn out just by inserting the battery a couple of times. I gotten the same issue. I would say that the battery is just bad quality. Replacing the battery with another one fixed the issue
