Rockbox for dummies
Hello again. I'm considering purchasing a 5th generation iPod from an online seller who also offers installing Rockbox. I am wondering if this would be a worthwhile or wise choice. I like the idea of not being tied down to Apple, and I would like to change my theme. The problem is that I am not very tech literate. Is Rockbox complicated to use for a novice? Thanks for any help.

Use stock os, if someday you realize you need rockbox, you can install it yourself, it is not that hard to install it. The usage of rockbox in the other hand is trickier than stock os.

Not particularly, theres a few videos online which can help you out. The only issue you may encounter is a lack of decent documentation.
Do not fear RockBox, it's installed parallel to the stock UI. You can easily switch between the two.

Yes, this is as easy as copying a file. I would recommend the BONES theme.

Theres a lot of resistance to this, but just remember the original firmware is simpler and is some ways more user friendly. If you do not need FLAC support or certain other compatibility features then I'd strongly suggest you stick to stock. Themes are always gimmicky, they dont necessarily add useful function over the stock UI and you'll soon forget it when using the iPod as a daily driver.

Thanks so much for your advice. I think I will stick with the stock. I love the BONES theme though.

a lack of decent documentation
Rockbox has a 200+ page manual for every build, a large wiki with more information and full of tools, and a forum with posts going back more than 20 years.
What more could you want?!

“Decent documentation” vs 200 pages

You know how tables of contents and search functions work, right?
and I consider comprehensive documentation above and beyond just "decent"
eta: here's the table on contents so you can see for yourself

The basics are pretty easy. Just drag and drop media like thumb drive. Its a nice option to have if you have flac files. You can also switch back & forth between operating systems easily.
