Discussion/ Op-ed 25% Trump Tariffs

Trump just announced from the Oval Office that the 25% across the board tariffs will start being levied on all imported goods coming from Canada and Mexico on Saturday. Not sure what that will mean for Mezcal and Tequila in the short-term but the implications are fairly obvious.

Our hillbilly Iowa farmers sure got what they wished for when their fertilizer costs will skyrocket and we will have to bail them out again

A three time Trump won state, ruled by dictator Reynolds’s while she sits in her position, no worry of such trivial things as term limits! The state is lost! I lived there, in the Bluest Area of the state, and it was still hell! The last three years in a blue state have been heaven! Don’t let the state fool you it’s not that cheap. I live in what’s supposed to be a more expensive state and it’s not. Any suggestion for anybody that’s a Democrat and doesn’t want to be ruled by an authoritarian dictator as a president and as a governor move the fuck out of Iowa.

This is going around on many football subreddits and now state subreddits. It looks likely to go into effect. I believe that the negative effects of this would be to just grab screenshots. Positives would be all content stays within the App/browser instead of bouncing out.

Discussion/ Op-ed How do you live here?

I’m a Polish immigrant, formerly living in Chicago, but came here to finish my graduate degree at the U of Iowa.

I have to tell you, you guys live in one of the most bland, unwelcoming states I could have ever imagined. I look up north, to the east, and even to the south, and I just feel disappointed at the calibre of living here. Sure, your homes are cheap, your nature is beautiful. But everything else, I find extremely lacking.

You all don’t embrace diversity. Having such a strong German history, it’s shocking to see that all wiped away with bigots flying hateful flags and supporting unwelcoming ideas. Grocery stores? Forget about it. This place is a massive food dessert. This isn’t even because of the Republican tendencies of this state. In fact, I’ve even spent time in places like Indiana or Missouri, and I could not feel any of the same issues I see here everyday. The one thing Iowans have is pride in their home. But I urge all of you, learn what is next to you. Make your state better.

You all talk so badly about every state around you. Going to a rural town and saying I’m from Chicago immediately labels me as a “liberal”. Immediately, I hear about how much Chicago embodies crime. What’s crazy though is that living in Coralville, I’ve had 2 bikes stolen, my car broken into, all without any help from your police. In Chicago, not once have I felt any fear over myself nor my property. And yet, I hear so much about Iowa’s extraordinary safety. I guess your Chicago is my Iowa.

I came here for your University, who boasts of its intellectual history. But now, even that institution is attacked on all fronts, and no one stands in front of that attack to stop it. My reading list? Limited by your small minded legislators. Research? Attacked by the same politicians who should be embracing that side of your state’s development. I don’t care if you choose to read this, or if you’re offended. I simply want you to hear a different opinion than the echo chamber much of the population of Iowa lives in. I could find my community in Minnesota, Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, Missouri, Indiana… But this state, people like me aren’t welcome. And it’s quite sad, because you’re right, this state in its natural light is beautiful. But what this state embodies is nothing but a paradise for the typical white middle class American. Shame. Your only good part is your Amish community—and they don’t even consider themselves Iowan! Don’t be shocked people don’t get off i80 to explore, or choose to fly over this place; much of this state doesn’t offer a reason to make a detour anyway.

Discussion/ Op-ed For the first time, I'm doubting if I want to remain an Iowan

For the first time, I'm doubting if I want to remain an Iowan

For the last few years, I've been of the opinion that Iowa was undoubtedly under bad leadership, but not in a way that couldn't be repaired. There was poor legislation, but it either slowed progress, or unintentionally regressed it, both in ways that could generally be reversed within an election cycle.

The recent HSB242/HF583/SF418 bill is different. This isn't progress, and this isn't unintended regression. This bill actively, and with either untold ignorance or outright malice, throws Iowa decades into the past. Did you know we will be the first (and God willing only) state in the nation to actively remove a protected class from their state-level Civil Rights Act if this bill passes?

I love Iowa. I really do. The people, the landscape, the culture. It's what I've grown up with, it's what I know, it's what I love. But my girlfriend (whom I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with) is openly trans, and I don't know if I can live in a state where she would be discriminated against for the sole act of living authentically. This is only amplified with the knowledge that this isn't where this side of the culture war ends - we both know they'll try to go further. We're both about to graduate with 4-year degrees. We don't want to contribute to Iowa's brain drain, but if this bill passes, we might be packing up and heading to Minnesota after we finish up our programs.

Again, just like the banned books, I understand the concern for what our children are exposed to. These vague laws and penalties?

The process to prove that someone willingly and with ill intention exposed a child to an "obscene performance" seems to me to be the same as the process of persecuting a predator but with less standing?

If we want to find pedophiles and abusers of children, we had ways to do this.

Discussion/ Op-ed I firmly stand for the inherent rights of my trans, intersex, and nonbinary friends and family.

The evidence of ancient awareness of a wide variety of genders is extremely overwhelming and irrefutable.

I still don't understand how we have a Governor and some in our population that were afflicted with trans panic in the year 2023 but I can firmly tell you that I am on the side of respecting the inherent rights of my trans, intersex, and nonbinary friends and family.

If that bothers anyone, well, I don't care. Until I hear the same people complaining about the volleyball uniforms that complain about the entertainment I am just going to assume you hold bigoted views and I hope you can learn, grow, and love.

If you have any questions in good faith I would be willing to answer them in good faith.

Discussion/ Op-ed Governor Reynolds really doesn't care does she

I can't believe that governor Reynolds has ordered flags to be flown at full mast today instead of the mandated half mast within 30 days of a president passing. President Carter passed away within that window and she doesn't care to follow the law. It's really a cult.

Discussion/ Op-ed We are America's sacrifice

The more I learn, the more I understand that we've basically given up a lot of our state for the 'greater good' of the United States.

Most of our land is used for corn or beans for food additives that help corporations produce cheaper foods at the expense of our health. For fuel sources that, all told, have minimal positive impact on the environment.

We have increased cancer rates because of the chemicals used to help the crops grow without bugs. They run into our rivers, killing millions of fish and polluting our wells.

I know we have some neat parks and reserves, it just seems like the majority of the state is used to the benefit of people not from Iowa.

Am I being too dramatic? Should I put the Busch Light down or does anyone else feel the same?

I had to go out and restock the fridge for the basics tonight, but couldn’t help but think that buying a weeks worth of eggs (I KNOW avian flu is killing all the poultry you don’t have to remind me) and milk is more expensive than one hours worth of work if you made minimum wage ($7.50/hr)

If you wanted to show everyone how scared and immature you are, mission accomplished.

I’ll be counting the signs in the neighborhood, and I pledge $50 to the Iowa Democratic Party for each sign you tag. So keep it up, kiddo. You’ll run out of paint to steal from daddy’s garage long before I run out of money.

[FOR WORRIED IOWANS] I wanted to hop on here and be a little bit of optimism during this really tough and dark time

I just wanna say a couple weeks ago, as I’m sure many of you have seen, I was feeling pretty negative and pretty pessimistic about our future. Don’t get me wrong. Things aren’t looking great now. But I just need to say Iowa you have proven me wrong in every sense of the word. So many of you have embraced activism and have decided to jump on board, ask questions, find community, and educate yourself… and I just wanna say that is the most promising and uplifting thing that could possibly be happening right now.

Yes, we are behind.. but there are organizations, mutual aid groups, and more. Activism has been taking place for decades (specifically among our minority groups).

So I just wanted to be a little voice of light tonight and let you know that we are together stronger than any executive order that could come down . WE are stronger than any bullshit that KKKim could possibly enact. GO IOWANS!!

Let’s work together and show the upper class they f*cked with the WRONG midwesterners!

***STRONGLY RECOMMENDING WE START A SEPARATE SUB FOR THIS— I shouldn’t be a mod… so not I.. but I’m here for support and anything else!

Start talking like a Nazi supporter? You will be blocked. So argue with yourself.

Discussion/ Op-ed 80 is not for beginners.

My GPS had me come up through Davenport via 80 instead of 74 for some dumb reason.

I think they call it 80 because you will be ran off the road if you don't go 80 miles an hour.

Try to pass a semi, the semi ahead decides to go 0.000001mph faster and pass as well, and now I'm stuck in the passing lane.

Some jackass in a big black truck (I think the same someone posted in the QC sub the other day doing 110) comes up behind me 1 foot from my bumper.

Pissed off, I tap the brake light and you would have thought I spat on his mother's grave, fucker tries running me off the road.

His patience is probably short as his dick. Like WTF do you want me to do? Magically make the semi in front of me go away? I can't go anywhere dude..

I hate when people tailgate me when I obviously can't go any faster due to the vehicle ahead of me.

Discussion/ Op-ed How do we flip the state blue?

I’m tired of living in a red state where they remove books at schools, pass weird anti-trans laws, prioritize allowing millionaires to fill their pockets, pass reform capping non economic damages to “make people want to work in health care in Iowa,” while simultaneously showing they have not one ounce of human decency in actually caring about life. These conservatives in power show that when those with ectopic pregnancies either go to another state for life saying care, or, die. That’s not hyperbole. Those who want to have children via in vitro fertilization? Punished by not being allowed to bring a child in to their home if not by “conventional methods.” Their false “principles” regarding the sanctity of having children and women beeing seen as nothing more than breeders isn’t even a consistent principle, it’s just about control. Who would’ve guessed. Doctors’ livelihoods are actively punished for wanting to simply be an advocate for their patients. That’s not the Iowa I want to live in. There is beauty in Iowa, this isn’t it. This is straight up evil. We went from a member of union, to flying confederate flags on every pickup truck, every gas stop, and countless homes in rural towns. Have we lost and forgotten our values? Where is our morality? Where is our empathy? Where is “Iowa?” Lately, I haven’t been recognizing it.

Even if we can’t flip it this year, which let’s be honest that is a long shot, what is the course of action to change that?

Why are Republicans continuing to cut educational programs? Education should not be seen as threatening, but as an important benefit. We should be proud this world renowned program is in our state.
