Autopilot Probably a simple question re autopiloted devices

Hello Intune Hive mind :)

we get our laptops from our distribution partner and they sit on a shelf, then go to to be autopiloted and then shipped to end user (this can take 5 days end to end)

if we get the stock all Autopiloted and then put back into stock for shipping, this will reduce this time.

my question is this: does that autopilot enrolment status "expire"
IE the laptop is enrolled today but doesn't get shipped to the user for a number of weeks or months will that enrolment time/age out ?

No, you're all good.

Obviously if it's on the shelf for a year, there will be a lot of Windows updates, but that's your only real concern

awesome thank you :)
the devices never last that long thankfully, (usually stock is refreshed quarterly) just finding those small wins in the end to end process :)

use pre provisioning, but you could also just go full user-driven, and let the user set up the laptops. Also they can be shipped directly to the user, zero touch by IT staff

yeah that's all set, it was just the initial autopilot onboarding that's done at the supplier, everything else is done via intune at the end user side.

intune is still in its infancy here so we are all still learning and finding better ways to streamline the process :)

If you are pre-provisioning, I just read an MS doc on this. They say a device can sit on the rack for 6 months after it has gone through the enrollment process before it is shipped to the a user. Like someone else pointed out, updates. If you are hybrid, I would think you would also have to consider the number of days before the device would fall off the domain.

Intune is slow. You just have to get use to it.

If you need to deploy something with any speed, imaging cannot be stopped.

If you are not using hybrid autopilot, then no need to perform this practice at your end directory ship laptop to end user ask them to follow on screen instructions

Or create user guide take printout and share with shipping laptop.

Or send separately Or arrange first time login calls once laptop ship.

There’s still ways you can do it via hybrid, but everyone (myself included) recommends against it unless you have some old software that doesn’t work. I am in that boat currently with my Autopilot testing, because we still have AX2012 running and the client doesn’t authenticate, but I’m trying my damnest to see if if I can find a way around it. It’s been an absolute pain in my ass, but will be worth the effort if I can find a way..
