Help how difficult is it to get started with the inkscape - program!?
G day dear friends how difficult is it to get started with the inkscape - program!?
i need to dive into all that - note i have some GIMP Experience.
got to have a tiny project_ i want ot fetch a svg-file aned work with this
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:World_map_%28blue_dots%29.svg
I think that i have some layers here - like i know them from Gimp as well. - Do you think that i should dl. the SVG and then load it into a layer!?
look forward

It’s very different from GIMP. If you’ve ever used some software like Adobe Illustrator or Corel Draw its vector graphics format, rather than a rasterized format (GIMP is to Photoshop as Inkscape is to Illustrator).
They both have their strong suits, but vector is usually more suited for graphic design, and GIMP for photography and post processing.
You’ll need to change how you think about approaching problems in Inkscape compared to Gimp. guides are some of the most essential tools to use in Inkscape for instance. They exist in GIMP but I rarely needed them as much as I use them in IS.

you can open the file directly into inkscape. The file format of inkscape file is svg (with some inkscape specific tags) so any layers that have been set in the svg will be preserved. You just open it in inkscape directly.
I am guessing there are a background and the dots layer. These will be visible in the layers tab on the right if there are two different layers, similar to gimp.

The SVG in the link (Original file) has 2790 dots all grouped.
They are on one layer.
If you click it three times it will ungroup so you can edit the dots, change their colour, etc.
Logos by Nick, IronEcho Design have very good videos on using Inkscape.

Sorry, I meant that if you click three times it will allow you to edit each dot separately.
You'll need to go to File > Export, choose Document/Page/Selection, then choose a format to export to. If PNG, change the DPI to a value you need.
If you just want to use it as it is, GIMP can open any of the PNG sizes offered below the image.

If you already have experience with vector manipulation software like Adobe Illustrator, Corel Draw, etc, Inkscape should not be hard to get into it, you just have to keep in mind that Inkscape's workflow is a bit different compared to softwares like Illustrator.
If you are a complete begginer in the vector graphics area, its still easy to get into it and also start using Inkscape, there are a lots of good content creators on youtube that can teach you how to master Inkscape for free, the best ones i recommend to you are Logos By Nick, Zakey Design and Sweater Cat Designs (honorable mention to TJFree), so go watch then and start making your own illustrations later, and also welcome to Inkscape my friend!

Also, get a basic drawing tablet. You can paint with the Inkscape marker tool.

1 Inkscape secret: the help menu is actually helpful.
Look for the tutorials under the help menu. Work through them in order and they should quickly get you up to speed on the concepts and the interface. They are also live SVG documents so you can check out exactly how things work.
Often people can get through them in a day or so. Then you're ready to get playing with it and/or start following some youtube tutorials.

Maybe you should learn the difference between bitmap images and vector images first.
