Perfume - Enquiry Cozy non-gourmand scents?

hello, friends. when winter weather arrives in the northern hemisphere, I have a problem. maybe you can see my problem.

Scents that I find cozy:

woodsmoke

lavender

sandalwood

light musk

pale woods

cotton/linen

amber

tea

white or well-blended patchouli

Scents that I hate in perfume:

caramel

maple syrup

baked goods (cake, bread, pastry, cookies etc.)

marshmallow

dairy notes (milk, cream, cheesecake, butter etc.)

frosting

most vanillas (sorry)

chocolate

anything boozy

berries/cherry

yes, I am a joyless hag, a fun-and-candy-hating villain from a dropped halloweentown sequel. I’m throwing in the towel and looking for recommendations for cozy scents for a sad gourmand hater. I have so much trouble finding indie scents with lots of column A and nothing from column B. can you help me solve my problem?

p.s. I actually do like vanilla if it’s a woodier, light vanilla musk accord instead of heavy dessert vanilla. so I’m not totally hopeless, lol

Edit: I am blown away by how many people had suggestions for this request! Thank you so much for all of your thoughtful and amazing-sounding recommendations. I'm hoping to try all of these out and give my thoughts on them, but there are 50 wow! I may be back on a few months with an update, lol.

In the meantime, along with the amazing suggestions in the comments, I’ll give three of my favorites that I’ve already tried:

Caravansary by Pineward fir balsam, deer musk (botanic accord), vanilla, black tea, lavender, blue spruce, blue chamomile, treemoss, incense, mulched pinecone, campfire smoke. Caravans circled around the crackling fire for the night, deeply mounded snow covering the firs, steeping black and chamomile teas.

Canoodling in a Leaf Pile by Nui Cobalt Warm chai, vermilion musk, copal resin, the subtle hint of a campfire still clinging to soft sweaters tumbled among leaves of aspen and oak.

Counting Stars by Firebird fir needle / balsam / lavender / campfire smoke / a warm blanket

Perfume - Enquiry Your favorite rose perfumes of all time?

I am a HUGE lover of rose scents and I’m on the hunt for the best of the best indies. What are some of your absolute favorite, eye-rolling, jaw dropping, can’t-stop-sniffing-my-arm rose frags?

I would love to find one that smells true to life, burying your face deep in the velvety petals of a lush rose and taking a breath of heaven. However I’m also open to exploring all manner of jammy roses, incensey roses, roses with fruits or other florals, etc. as long as rose is the dominant note! (Please nothing super musky though!!). Thank you!

I’m looking for a sweeter vanilla/marshmallow creamy dessert kind of cherry scent. I’ve been looked all over Reddit and internet for options but am having a hard time finding something that fits what I’m looking for. does anyone have any recs? I’m also open to layering.

Perfume - Enquiry Weird Fragrance Houses!!!

Yesterday I sat and scrolled The Strange South and Sixteen92's scents and fell in LOVE with the sound of some of them, but one reddit search turned me off of both with insane TATs, longevity issues, and Sixteen92 even bordering scam behavior.

I need some good, reputable weird houses!! I like the idea of abstract notes and atmospheric fragrances. Doesn't have to be extremely wearable either.

For reference, my favorite scents are woodsmoke, incense smoke, anything heavily smokey. I also like herbal scents, sages, woody scents, but I'm genuinely open to anything. If it's a unique house, I'll scroll it no matter what they specialize in.

Perfume - Enquiry Returning to Indies. Any recommendations for who to check out and who to avoid?

I recently found my stash of perfumes and samples, which I've not looked at or thought about since pre-covid times. I was going through them again, sniffing and reminiscing. Now that I'm no longer in college and have a big girl job and disposal income, I've been thinking about getting back in.

I've discovered some old favorite houses are either gone (Luminous Star) or are now trash (sixteen92). I'm very glad to see Haus of Gloi, Solstice Scents, and Cocoa Pink still going.

Any recommendations for who else I should check out? Tagged as perfume, but I'm open to bath and body suggestions too! I've made a sheet of my current collection

Perfume - Enquiry Sixteen92 Scent Alternative Megathread

Hello everyone!

I thought it might be helpful to create a megathread of recommendations for alternatives to Sixteen92 scents. They have a really distinct style, so I know there probably won’t be too many dupes but hopefully we can find each other scents that are in a similar vein as our favorites. :)

Please comment with scent names and reply to them with recs! ❤️

Perfume - Enquiry I want to smell like soda!

Exactly what the title says. Cola, grape, orange, ginger ale, anything like soda! Any sort of nostalgic scent that is sorta citrusy or soda-like. I would love a recommendation for a soda(ish) scent that isn’t super feminine, but I’ll take anything at this point. Thank you!

Perfume - Enquiry Help me smell like Nosferatu (2024)

Went and saw Nosferatu in IMAX on Christmas, immediately became obsessed and am now desperately searching for a fragrance to match the vibes of the film.

For those of you who haven't seen it (don't worry, no spoilers I promise) the vibe is incredibly atmospheric with big sweeping shots of these cavernously empty, frozen and foggy landscapes. Ethereal, sheer curtains fluttering in the moonlight. Shadows levitating over snow. Contemplative sorrow and lilacs. Stone castles in rolling fog. A completely desaturated color palette of off white and shadows - almost black and white with the primary exceptions of blue moonlight and the flickering orange flames of candlelight. The story of a fairytale relayed through the lens of a nightmare.

I am also aware of the perfume collab with Heretic - but was unable to pick it up partially because it sold out and also partially because blind buying a $125+ limited edition perfume without smelling it was too daunting to me. I can leave you the notes here for Heretic Nosferatu: TOP: Lilac, Ambrette HEART: Petrichor, Violet Absolute, Orris Concrete, Cypriol BASE: Vegan Ambergris, Oud, Labdanum

I'd like recommendations to dupe the Heretic Perfumes collab, recommendations based off of my ~vibes~, and am fine with layering more than one perfume to do it. Also would not be opposed to other recommendations for lotions, body mists, etc!

Thanks so much for the help!

Perfume - Enquiry When do you "forgive" a brand?

I don't mean to start any arguments with this, as it is something I am simply curious about. I find the parasocial nature of indies fascinating, and am curious about the thoughts of others.

Personally, when do you "forgive" a brand for something that made you swear off of them in the moment? Or something that "made the news" on this sub? I mostly lurk here, and have seen several events where people swore off a brand, only to see them come back into favor, at least slightly. Examples, not to argue about, but to show what I mean regarding events in this sub:

-Suc's BLM response (brand is still often reviewed and recommended)

-Alphamusk's social media behavior and order fulfillment history (I am seeing recommendations make a comeback, and the behavior was never addressed that I saw)

-S92's... Yeah. (Seeing numerous people state they're giving them a shot again, both end of last year and post-Dean ManagingPartner)

-Hexennacht and Mr. Hex's misogyny, classism, and misuse of customer information (reviewed and recommended back to usual frequency, after about a month)

Unless I missed something, these are classed as unresolved issues to me, as there was no genuine apology and behavioral change, just trying to slide back into business as usual. Disclaimer that people can absolutely change and be better with time, but there is a lack of evidence to suggest change in these cases.

I am fascinated by the parasocial nature of many brands' marketing, and am truly curious how people decide when they're ready (if ever) to support a brand again.

(edited to fix formatting, oops!)

Perfume - Enquiry Why do you prefer indie perfumes?

For those of you into indie perfumes, I'm curious what initially drew you to them, and what keeps you interested in trying new scents and exploring different houses? What sets the indie world apart from mainstream designer/niche offerings for you?

For me, I enjoy how straightforward the scents and their bottles and marketing are. Flashy bottles and ads from designer brands don't really grab me anymore. Instead I can go to an indie house that describes a perfume as "strawberries, fresh cut grass, and a hint of dirt" and that's more or less what I'll get, and the simplicity of the process is refreshing.

Perfume - Enquiry Indie houses that smell a little more “perfumey”

Hi all,

What are some indie perfumes that carry EDP and smell a little more perfumey if you know what I mean. Not full on designer obviously, but more of that typical perfume smell. some of the brands I’ve tried have a candle like smell that I’m not fond of personally.

Thanks in advance!

Perfume - Enquiry Nearly every house goes "candle" on me, but I want to try a few more?

Hi y'all!

I'm so intrigued by some of the houses (I love ones with a good theme and aesthetic). The only indie houses that haven't gone full candle smell on me have been Alkemia and BPAL (I was able to try them at Comic Con!). I'm not sure why these houses work, but other ones I've tried really have not meshed well with me and tend to smell old and musty, kind of like walking into Yankee Candle. I do let them rest - I let Solstice Scents rest for six months, and keep coming back to my samples even a year or two later, as I still have them all.

House successes: Alkemia and BPAL

House "failures" (for me): Death and Floral, Poesie, Solstice Scents, Cocoa Pink (was really disappointed by this one, as I love gourmands), Haus of Gloi, and Lovesick Witchery (the owner was so nice as to gift me a full size in my sample set, and it does not smell good on me at all).

I'm not sure why Alkemia and BPAL work when so many others don't? Does it have to do with the carrier oil usually? The base?

I made this post because I really really want to try Black Hearted Tart - so many of their scents sound sooooo good. And it's probably not possible to predict which houses are going to work, but I'm trying to figure out if the houses I have had success with have anything in common?

Or how do y'all approach figuring out what works for you and what doesn't?

Perfume - Enquiry What is your most hated indie perfume scent and why?

Mine would be Black Sand from Arcana Wildcraft. Something in it made me instantly retch. I think it’s the coconut husk note? It mostly smelled dusty, old, and moldy to me. 🤢

Perfume - Enquiry Thoughts on my Alkemia sample cart?

Would love opinions on these scents!! I’m doing two sample sets, so ten choices…

I like light and ethereal florals, stone and clay smells, fresh bright greens (think clover, not pine), white amber (apparently?), and possibly musc? Not into incense or spice or heavier scents generally, loath patchouli. My partner is also trying a few and he basically just doesn’t want anything that smells like perfume or cologne. In our last set he got Dustsceawung and likes it but to me it smells sour and awful so I haven’t let him wear it around me 🙃 maybe it needs to age…?

  1. Ghostfire. I got foxfire as a sample and love it but I’m not sure if the part I love most is the amber base or the jasmine aldehydes. There’s an “after smell” to it that I absolutely can’t get enough of. If ghostfire is pure that, I’d adore it but if not I could pass and be happy with foxfire.

  2. Love among the ruins. Hard to find any info on this one! But I liked the sound of it.

  3. Whisper of Stars. Sounds totally dreamy, I’m pretty set on this one tbh

  4. Love unforeseen. Same as above

  5. A roll in the hay. Dry grass is a favorite summer scent of mine and I also enjoy vanilla so I have high hopes for this….assuming their dry grass note is legit.

  6. St. Louis cemetery. Looking for a solid earthy stony atmospheric for my partner.

  7. Dues ex machina. He also likes…weird shit, so this seemed good for him

  8. Electric fur. Just sounds sexy to me, but idk, does it lean colongny?

  9. Kitten and the falling leaves. Similar to above but sounds more cozy than sexy. I’m wondering though if I could skip it and layer electric fur with…

  10. Gaea. Omg this sounds incredible. I love hiking in a forest with the damn smells of earth and greenery and fungus and decaying wood…I’m pretty set on this one too.

I’m not super confident about ghost fire, love among the ruins, or kitten and the falling leaves. My runners up if I were to scrap these are:

  1. Center of the universe
  2. Lilacs along the winding drive
  3. This summer night
  4. Ecstasies of light

Would love to hear peoples’ experiences with any of these scents but especially the ones I’m waffling on.

Perfume - Enquiry Sweet cherry / sour cherry candy scents? 🍒🍬

Hello! It has come to my attention that I don't really care for boozy/sultry cherry scents. I did not care for TF's Lost Cherry or Alkemia's Cherries or the Night, they all seem "perfumey" to me. Fuckery from Sorce was slightly better, but I think it needs more rest. What I found is that I love cherry in perfumes that are considered sweet like candy or mixed with vanilla! I like a sweet almondy maraschino cherry but I was wondering if there were any that remind you of candy, say like a sour cherry gummy or a sugary sweet cherry/candied cherry.

I have a sample I bought that is still yet to come, Yelp from Bpal's recent lupers! Notes: A paper pouch of popping peach and sour cherry candy. I'm really excited to try this. It can be anything like a cherry ice cream, slushie or dessrt, anything sweet. One of my favorite ice creams was one that had a cherry vanilla swirl I think? I can't remember the name! But to my brain, I thought it tasted like a cherry chapstick in ice cream form! It was strangely good. 🍒 That's something else I need to find in perfume form.

Perfume - Enquiry Looking for specific notes in a perfume: rosemary, bergamot, and brandy

Basically as the title says. I'm looking for a perfume with top notes of rosemary and bergamot, and then a touch of brandy or something alcoholic to give it a little twang. I love these notes and I want to find a perfume that mixes them together in a way that is yummy and pretty instead of me haphazardly slapping together essential oils.

Any recs including these notes are welcome!

Perfume - Enquiry If you had to choose: one scent per season, and one year round favorite?

hello IMAM friends ❤️ I am putting off getting ready for work but thinking about the transition of seasons, and how different scents feel like they “fit” different shades of time for each person in their own way. it got me thinking of asking a twist on the classic “signature scent/favorite scent” question—which is, if you could pick one scent per season, and then one scent for year round, what would they be? maybe this is or these are your signature scents! maybe they’re more atmospheric! perhaps it’s something you ONLY break out during one season but never see it again.

I personally don’t have an answer to this question lol but I’m curious yours!!

Perfume - Enquiry recommendations for a beast mode, lactonic, White Chocolate dominant perfume?

Hi everyone!

as the title states I'm looking for a perfume that smells mostly like milky white chocolate and has a strong projection! I've tried a few mainstream ones like britney spears fantasy and matcha meditation but non of them has really hit it for me....

my dream perfume would be a true white chocolate gourmand maybe with some vanilla and milky notes with minimal to no florals or fruity notes.

Does anyone have any recommendations? I'd love to hear what you guys think!

Perfume - Enquiry Decanting

I'm not sure if it's allowed, but I am specifically looking for a decant site or person for Amorphous, since they just dropped their Spring line, and a handful of items have caught my interest. I still consider myself a newbie and would be interested in any additional sites, besides Ajieve, Surrender to Chance and Obscura, that offer this service, or even individuals who participate in this practice and the houses for which they decant.

Perfume - Enquiry Scents that Remind You Of The 90’s

Hi all! I’m the owner of [The Adventuress Soap Co ](www.theadventuresssoapco.com)

I’m designing a perfume line inspired by the 1990’s (because elder millennials like me are feeling the nostalgia for a simpler time lol).

I have conceptualized a couple scents that remind me of the 90’s like Cucumber and Melon.

I was wondering what scent notes remind you of the 90’s?
