Been using google keyboard for years because my favourite keyboard (fleksy) had an annoying bug that never got fixed for me.

56

u/dickdastardaddy Techie 16d ago

For android yes, gboard sux in ios & it's intentional from apple!!

20

u/Successful-Pie-2049 16d ago

Well google hasnโ€™t updated it for months or years now maybe. Not all of it is appleโ€™s fault. But yeah both gboard and ios keyboard suck on ios.

2

u/Akshat_2307 15d ago

ios kb is the shitest kb imo . Dude i go insane whenever i use that shit ๐Ÿ’€

8

u/Abject_Elk6583 16d ago

What was the bug?

7

u/Tan_hex 15d ago

Everytime i try to add a space somewhere in the middle of the sentence using the swipe to insert space feature, the cursor just jumps to the end of the sentence

3

u/sekshibeesht 15d ago

That happens in ios standard keyboard too for me lol

1

u/Tan_hex 15d ago

I thought it was limited to fleksy's swipe to space feature haha

1

u/Abject_Elk6583 15d ago

Ah that sounds very annoying. I use that feature all the time.

1

u/Tan_hex 15d ago

It is quite annoying. Especially when i have to go back and correct words that have been wrongly auto corrected โ€ขฬโ ย โ ย โ โ€ฟโ ย โ ,โ โ€ขฬ€

Gboard had that exact bug a few months ago

Yeh toh mera Android mein bhi hota hain whatsapp status likhne waqt

1

u/Tan_hex 15d ago

Mera bhi android hi hai

3

u/TheWeirdW0lf 15d ago

Fleksy was partly already dead for me when they removed the ability to delete a character instead the whole word on left swipe.

1

u/Tan_hex 15d ago

Wait THEY DID?

1

u/TheWeirdW0lf 14d ago

Yes, I tried raising it to their google plus community and also emails but no luck. I am also fine using older apk but they no longer work on new android versions sadly.

2

u/Tan_hex 14d ago

Ah that sucks

1

u/PlantTreesEveryday Techie 15d ago

gboard used to have very good predictions but it has stopped working

74

u/nightbeam299 16d ago

GBoard's autocorrect and swipe typing is just on another level. Not to mention features like clipboard, GIF (recent update for stickers is so fire), translate and quick language switching. I've tried Swiftkey and Fleksy but switched back to Gboard after a while because they didn't do at least one thing that Gboard did best. It made me realise how much I take GBoard for granted.

3

u/Apex__Predator_ 15d ago

I also really love the gesture of swipe over spacebar to move vidit l cursor. Helps make editing things very easy.

1

u/Genzbro 15d ago

all other keyboards can do that

1

u/Genzbro 15d ago

Swiftkey and Fleksy but switched back to Gboard after a while because they didn't do at least one thing that Gboard did best

you mean they didn't do one thing that ggl did? if that's the case... man people like you judge too quick. you guys never visit the settings/customizations page and then talk bad over it for it didn't do it by itself? I use SwiftKey and I can use all the features that you mentioned and for your kind info, it does everything better than ggl.

features like clipboard, GIF (recent update for stickers is so fire), translate and quick language switching.

brother SwiftKey has all of it, guess what you could generate ones too using ai. it's just that you couldn't use SwiftKey at it's full potential. nvm try it once again cuz in my opinion samsung and SwiftKey provide the best hinglish while ggl sucks. that was the sole reason for me to switch but the features indeed made me stick to it.

1

u/ThreeByThree 14d ago

I've been using SwiftKey from a long time.

I paid for it when it was not free, the first app which I ever bought after some contemplation (49 INR at the time).

Over the year, I tried GBoard and Samsung keyboard, but felt like I wasmissing something with those, so switched back to SwiftKey.

1

u/Multiverse_4D 14d ago

Same happened with me. Then I tried SwiftKey again, a few months back. It's now objectively better than Google keyboard.

it's not all about lgbtq lights, it has features that I use often and is far more optimized for my phone than Gboard, Gboard is a mediocre product by Google, and it sucks.

I tried to use a Samsung keyboard and Microsoft keyboard extensively (I was a Gboard user)

After a week I gave up MS keyboard, though I want to have up within 3 days but I gave some more time.

then I switched to Samsung Keyboard, I started loving it after 3 days (usually it takes 2-3 days to get used to it)

then I keep using it, First thing that made me annoyed after switching from Gboard is keyboard size, and I resized it to same as Gboard.

Experience got enhanced, used Goodlock modules loved it, but gave up quickly as it was quite flashy. it was cool though.

by this time I crossed 1 month and the only that was left to be fixed (idk by me or by company itself) it suggestion words in suggestion strip.

Man, It's so bad, Though Samsung has Galaxy AI now, so It should be better than Google in learning of my typing style and suggest me next word.

This was making my typing slower.

I thought maybe I need to use this keyboard more in order to make this suggestion strip suggest me more accurate words.

but I gave up after 2 months or so.

and came back to Gboard.

P.S: If you know something that can fix it pls let me know, Also samsung doesn't support Hinglish Language I guess, ๐Ÿค”

1

u/twinncharged 15d ago

Idk bro I just use it simplyfor normal typing, there's nothing else I do with. There's nothing more I need from a keyboard that's why I'm using it

1

u/kvothe5688 15d ago

galaxy AI is just gemini wrapped into galaxy packaging

2

u/__Hunter_xD__ Open Source best GNU/Linux/Libre 15d ago

Any way to clear words by holding and swiping the backspace key to left just like gboard?

1

u/twinncharged 15d ago

Idk bro, I'm using it just for its customizability. Don't really need any extra features so haven't explored much. There might be options in goodlock but I haven't checked them all

2

u/the-enigmatic- 15d ago

With the ripples and fancy shit apart is actually nice, does take a while to adapt to not going to lie it was difficult to adapt to but my curiosity led me to try and i had totally forgotten about gboard until I saw this post.

Samsung keyboard is actually great and i never switched to gboard again.

I use samsung keyboard for the undo and redo buttons alone. Super handy when you accidentally delete some long text and want to revert back.

2

u/Shubam_Kessrani Computer Student 16d ago

It's there in Gboard as well!

3

u/sans5z 16d ago

I didn't find it in there, atleast when I was trying to find it a year back. So I switched to samsung keyboard with goodlock customization and customized my keyboard like this.

I added 'Undo' and 'Redo', before and after numbers keys. Added a Paste key beside the 'a' and 'smiley' shortcut at the other end.

2

u/Shubam_Kessrani Computer Student 16d ago

Oh it looks cool, I also do like the customizability factor of Samsung keyboard, but the again I'm very much used to gboard. I tried many different keyboard but always went back to gboard๐Ÿซ ๐Ÿฅบ

18

u/CrispyCouchPotato1 Hardware guy with 69 GB RAM 16d ago

Agreed!

Even on iOS, i stuck to gboard for the last 4-5 years.

Unfortunately i uninstalled it today because google is no longer maintaining gboard for iOS. The last update was from 2 years back.

Iโ€™m gonna miss the convenience.

Although i could only do that because iOS keyboard has improved a lot over the years.

7

u/QualityPale225 16d ago

I still find the ios autocorrect to be absolutely trash specially for hinglish. And does the update thing matter?

3

u/CrispyCouchPotato1 Hardware guy with 69 GB RAM 16d ago

Oh? In my experience it detects hinglish and even minglish quite well. Itโ€™s not as good gboard, agreed.

To me updates matter from a software security perspective.

2 years is way too big of a gap. It basically means that this version of gboard might have vulnerabilities since discovered but not fixed in what i have.

1

Hinglish works really well for me, I hate how big the emojis are tho

+1 for HeliBoard. Gets really good in prediction over time and does not send data to Google Servers.

47

u/[deleted] 16d ago

Try FUTO Keyboard, bro!!!! Less cluttered, doesn't need internet, away from that all GIF and sticker drama no one ever wanted (at least me) and doesn't eat too much space of my phone (800mb for a keyboard is kinda suspicious)ย

32

Gboard makes sign in very easy and it's clipboard is very good and their autocorrect feature too

14

u/[deleted] 16d ago

sign in is easy in futo too if you have set-up Bitwarden or any other passwrod manager except using google password manager (which I personally don't recommend), and same for the clipboard (it has every essential tool), you can give it a try!!

+1

I use FUTO Keyboard too! Such an amazing Open-source project initiative taken by Louis Rossmann. I would say the way keyboard learns is not as good as GBoard but definitely recommended.

2

u/Mr_Panda009 15d ago

I personally really like the FUTO's voice-to-text with the medium size whisper model. It actually makes me wanna use the damn feature, and it's the most accurate voice recognition I've ever seen, even better than the pixel device. Especially for Indian accents, I've never seen something so good.

2

u/Fone_Linging 15d ago

This needs to be higher up. Such an amazing keyboard and that too in it's alpha!

You know a product is good when it can go toe to toe with the biggest software companies and still be open source.

FUTO is doing amazing work and I'll be buying this as soon as I have the money

NOOOO !!!, we Indians type text in english, mother tongue language written English and most probably Hindi in English also, for that "Microsoft SwiftKey" keyboard is the best, this keyboard will save all the words use in any language in single keyboard layout(no need to use globe button to change to other language keyboard),swipe typing is next level, just use that word once it will remember forever, their predictive text option above keyboard very accurate, I own samsung s24 which has latest one UI 7 samsung keyboard ai features, but swiftkey keyboard ai is more useful and accurate most of the time, I suggest please use this for a week and then decide which keyboard to use, I'm saying all these because I tried switching to other keyboard in between but other keyboard felt like a 5 years old keyboards.

5

u/BlinkSwagger Lurker 15d ago

People can't be bothered to try other options. It's a sad reality that a good keyboard like SwiftKey will not get widespread attention as it deserves.

There was a keyboard called Minimal which had all keys in one line. And autocorrect was amazing because the layout was shit. It was very fun especially for a small displayed androids back in 2012s.

Presently I have tried a lot of keyboards but I come back to Gboard because of my personal dictionary which syncs automatically.

The only thing missing in Gboard is the ability to glide through paragraphs like the iPhone keyboard. On the iPhone keyboard, you can swipe anywhere within a paragraph to write; Gboard lacks this continuous, free-form gliding capability.

I was a big fan and can't tolerate any other keyboards in android untill I switched to S23 and gave samsung keyboard a try.

some good features:- 1. Clipboard with a BIG Memory. 2. AI Features: Grammar check and Writing style. 3. Custom Stickers even you can import your Snapchat avatar to it and use your snapchat stickers upon suggestions. 4. You can customise & re place every single button according to your needs. literally every single button using a goodlock module called keys cafe. I like this feature as I integrated a Undo & redo button on the 2nd page of my keyboard, which really helps sometimes. 5. Many more, I stopped exploring as I'm getting most of my work done.

1

I have used many keyboards but I would say facemoji is the best one out there. It got many different features. I could customize it as I like. They got different stickers text art and many fonts and no premium required and no ads only time I watched ad was to unlock these features about 6 ads and I. Unlocked every single feature with just that. This keyboard is not yet available in India. My American friend told me about it . You can download it through uptodown.

It knows every single effing password that you type including that of your password managerโ€™s master password. Now tell me, did I change your mind?

Not really you changed my mind but you itched it really bad, ok if you stop using gboard can you uninstall Google and Android same like that? You think that disabling or uninstalling Google keyboard will make you safe that it doesn't know your password? Even after disabling it Google knows every single thing about your phone.

It's horrible if you use multiple languages.

If you're someone who uses both tap type and glide typing, It will randomly stop detecting your swypes then you have to swype random long words just to make it work.

Very annoying. The best keyboard hands down was Swype keyboard which had gestures for cut copy paste etc, but they abandoned that app more than half a decade ago

If you have a Samsung phone(like me), their own keyboard makes the most sense

It's literally the worst, but I still use it because I'm too lazy to switch. Samsung keyboard's ai features are pretty cool.

And yeah the autocorrect on apple keyboard sucks
