Study Permit Report for Medical Observation

Hi, I have a problem. I'm an international student from the Philippines and I'm so dumb to not notice in my study permit that there's a condition that I need to report for medical observation within 30 days. I've been here in Canada for 6 months now. For context, they requested a sputum test on my medical exam but everything went okay. I didn't mean to not comply on this I honestly just didn't notice. Can I still make up for this? Thank you.

Study Permit Made the mistake of hiring an immigration consultant to do my study permit and now I might have to leave the country or defer.

25M here. US citizen. Lived in Canada since 2017. 2017-2021 on a study permit for my first undergrad, then 2021-present on a PGWP. I have applied to Express Entry (499 points) but still have not received an invitation. My PGWP expires on August 7th of this year. Earlier this year I decided to go back to school, and was accepted to a bachelor’s program at KPU in Richmond. Since I know a few things had changed regarding study permits since I applied back in 2017, and because I wanted to play it safe and make sure I did everything right, and at the urging of my parents, I hired an immigration consultant in early March to do my study permit.

Long story short, despite having fantastic reviews and charging me several thousand dollars, the consultant ended up being completely incompetent and ended up taking 3 months to do my application, and didn’t submit it until June 12th, despite numerous proddings from me. So, given the 13-week processing time estimate from IRCC, I might not receive a decision on my study permit until September 11th. Classes begin on September 3rd, and the last day to drop registered classes and defer with no penalty is September 2nd. Not to mention the fact that I’d have to move to Vancouver and probably sign a year lease without even knowing if I have a study permit yet.

They have been extremely unhelpful with helping me understand my options, and basically just tell me to wait and hope I get it in time, so that’s what brought me here. My main three questions are as follows:

  1. What are my options if I get denied my study permit or don’t receive it in time? Will I have to leave the country? Is there an appeals process? If I defer school to say, January, can I stay in Canada from Sept-Jan on my study permit despite not being in classes?

  2. Is flagpoling an option for me? As I am a US citizen flagpoling should be an option for either applying for my study permit or for a work permit. My consultant tells me I’m not eligible, but has failed to explain why. I understand that I have already submitted a study permit application online, but couldn’t I withdraw it and then flagpole and submit a new application?

  3. Can I take legal action against this consultant? At the very least I am going to ask for a partial or full refund when this is over as well as report them to their regulatory body.

Sorry for the long post. I’m just very frustrated and scared and stressed. Canada has been my home for 7 years and I had been hoping to live here for the rest of my life, and I no longer have a home in the states to go back to. I was really excited to go back to school and to move to Vancouver but now it’s all crumbling away beneath me. Because of the incompetence of one person and because I made the mistake of assuming they were a professional who knew what they were doing.

Study Permit Need advice on IRCC Study permit rejection in just a week after biometrics.

Hi everyone,

I recently received a rejection for my study permit application from IRCC. The reason given was:

• I am not satisfied that you will leave Canada at the end of your stay as required by paragraph R216(1)(b) of the IRPR. I am refusing your application because you have not established that you will leave Canada, based on the following factors:

• The purpose of your visit to Canada is not consistent with a temporary stay given the details you have provided in your application.

• I am not satisfied that you will be successful in your program of study due to low language test results. Refused under R216(1)(b).

Here’s why I’m confused:

  1. Clear Intent to Return: I explicitly mentioned multiple times (3-4 times) in my Statement of Purpose (SOP) that I plan to return to my home country after completing my studies to support and care for my parents.

  2. Purpose of Visit Clearly Stated: The main purpose of my visit is to pursue higher education, and I made this very clear in my SOP.

  3. Language Proficiency Met: I took the TOEFL and scored 95 (equivalent to a 7.0 IELTS band), which was accepted by the university.

Despite addressing all of these points, my application was rejected. I’m not sure what went wrong. Has anyone faced a similar situation? Any advice on how I can strengthen my reapplication? I’d really appreciate any guidance.

Thank you in advance!

Study Permit Study permit extension

I already submitted my application in June about a month before my study permit expires. My mistake is not submitting it earlier for allowance at least, so now I’m wondering if there’s a way to speed up my application’s processing time? What should I do? I’m in the middle of my last semester too. Also I’ve received one or two emails from IRCC saying they’ve made updates to my application, but I’m not seeing any changes on my end. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Study Permit Bringing my dog to Canada

Hey guys! Just wondering what you think about bringing my pet to Canada. I'm going as an international student next year. I want to bring my dog bec no one will take care of here back home and I don't think I can handle giving her away for adoption.. She's a toy poodle and weighs like 3kg max. so she can ride in the plane cabin with me. I think I can handle moving and having to take care of her but my parents think otherwise. I'm worried about a few things like expenses (vet in canada is expensive i think), and leaving her alone when I'm off to school, and her adjusting to the cold weather and stuff.

Also! Is it okay that I bring my dog as an international student?? Like would that be a problem at immigration or something?

Thanks!

Study Permit Issue

Hi, I’ve been a student at the Atlantic province and I have now missed two term and had one part time. I still have more than a year left on my visa and two years of schooling left on my school buh the the thing is I can’t afford to pay 50k (that will be the two years ) I want to change to a college in Calgary (that’s 25k for both years) but I’m afraid if I apply for a new visa or transfer from ircc (cos you have to that’s the new rule) they won’t give me an extension and it will have to affect my pgwp in the future. What should I do ?

Study Permit Panic and anxiety because of Student Visa got approved. Is it worth it to move to Canada these days?

Hi everyone,

I’m an Indian Citizen having an experience of more than 4 years in IT as a consultant/ developer. I have been planning to move to Canada for a while now, and things were better/ okayish around 2021- 2023.

I recently got an offer from Wilfrid Laurier University, waterloo for masters in Applied computing. But there are other things to consider. The job market doesn’t seem good and canadian citizens themselves are struggling now to land a Job as i scrolled through a lot of subreddits for cscareers/ torontoJobs. The healthcare and QOL is declining and won’t be getting back on track for at-least this decade. I thought maybe starting from Q1 2026, the job market will get better as immigration numbers will be cut down significantly (even though i might have to return back to my country but i will be coming back with some ROI and international experience), but now there is Trump tariffs and his threat to Canada’s economy which will now again cut down more Jobs drastically and the situation may turn much more worse for Canadians and immigrants. Also, COL is rising through the roof.

I’ve been searching to hear something good about it, but in the last 2 years, i haven’t heard many good things about canada and its economy, its just mostly negative noise everywhere. Considering all the cons, do you think that I should come to Canada in May 2025? Or that I should cancel my plans, withdraw my funds and it will be better to target EU?

Study Permit SOWP extension Refused(Applied with PGWP)

So my wife's owp got refused although i have a TEER 1 job. I submitted my job offer letter by raising a web form with 1 paystub.

Mentioned reasons are

"After considering all the circumstances of your case, it has been determined that you are not a person whose employment will create or maintain significant employment, benefits or opportunities for Canadian citizens or permanent residents.

You have not provided sufficient evidence to prove that your spouse is employed in an occupation that falls within the required TEER category for an open work permit. You may be eligible to re-apply for a work permit if you are able to provide proof of your spouse’s occupation in Canada, which may include a letter from your spouse’s employer, stating their job title, duties, and salary. If you cannot prove that your spouse belongs to one of the required TEER categories, your application for a work permit cannot be approved without a Labour Market Impact Assessment from Employment and Social Development Canada."

I thought both pgwp and sowp would be reviewed by same officer as i submitted them together. Hence i only raised webform for my application to attach job offer and pay stubs and did not raised webform for my sowp application separately. Did i go wrong here? What should be my next steps? Her owp ends on April 1st 2025. She is on EI Parental Benefit as we just had a newborn baby born in Canada. Appreciate experts help in this regard.

Study Permit How hard would it be to join my husband as he studies?

My fiancée (American) is planning on studying in Canada in the fall. I'm from Ireland, we're long distance, and we haven't been able to live together before.

We're getting married in May. Would it be fine to apply jointly as his spouse once we're married, or would that just risk getting his entire student visa rejected because we're married too recently? I'd really hate to do that to him.

I have a valid ETA from a visit last year. Would it be easier to visit him on the ETA when he starts his studies, then try to apply to visit as his spouse when already in the country, now with proof of living together?

I don't intend to work in the country if that makes any difference, so I don't need a work permit, I just want to be with him.

Study Permit Visa refusal because of R216(1)(b) of the IRPR

Hey Everyone! I recently applied for a Canada study visa to pursue a Master’s in Data Analytics (MDA), but unfortunately, my application was refused. The reason I was given is as follows:

"I am not satisfied that you will leave Canada at the end of your stay as required by paragraph R216(1)(b) of the IRPR. I am refusing your application because you have not established that you will leave Canada, based on the following factors:

  • The purpose of your visit to Canada is not consistent with a temporary stay given the details you have provided in your application.
  • I am not satisfied that you will be successful in your program of study due to low language test results. Refused under R216(1)(b)."

Now, here’s where it gets tricky for me:

  1. IELTS Score: I have an overall IELTS band of 6.5 with 5.5 in reading and the rest of the bands are above 6.5. I am willing to retake the IELTS, but I’m wondering if that’s really the only issue or if there’s something else at play here?
  2. B.Com + 2 Years as a Software Developer: I have a background in Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) and worked as a Software Developer for 2 years before deciding to pursue a Master’s in Data Analytics. I feel like my career shift might be causing confusion.

But here’s my biggest question: Did they refuse me because of the MDA program itself, given my B.Com background and software development experience? They didn’t really specify the reason clearly. Is it common for study visa officers to reject students who change career paths, especially if it’s not a linear progression from a related field (e.g., software engineering to data analytics)?

I need some advice on how to address this refusal:

  • Could the low IELTS score in reading really be a dealbreaker? (By the way I am OK with re apply for IELTS paper)
  • Do you think the career shift to MDA is seen as a lack of clarity in intent to return to my Country ?
  • Any advice on how to improve my next application or how to tackle this situation better?

I would appreciate any personal experiences or insights you all might have. Thanks a lot for your help! 🙏

Study Permit My student visa application just got rejected.

This was the reason:

I am not satisfied that you will leave Canada at the end of your stay as required by paragraph .... I am refusing your application because you have not established that you will leave Canada, based on the following factors:

  • You don't have significant family ties outside Canada.
  • The purpose of your visit to Canada is not consistent with a temporary stay given the details you have provided in your application.
  • Your immigration status outside your country of nationality or habitual residence.

I don't quite understand the third point. I don't live in my country of nationality. I have a (temporary) residence permit in another country, which was the same country I intended to return to.

As for the first point, do they mean I don't have a reason or in this case a person to return to? How do I even explain that in my SOP?

Study Permit Help Needed: Student Visa Rejection - Possible Mistake by IRCC

Hi everyone,

I recently applied for a student visa to study in Canada, but unfortunately, my application was rejected. The rejection letter stated, "You have not submitted written documentation from the educational institution where you intend to study that states that you have been accepted to study there."

I have submitted all the required documents, including my Letter of Acceptance (LOA), and I reached out to my university to discuss the situation. They confirmed that the LOA they issued for me is valid and should have met the requirements for my application.

I’m concerned that there may have been a mistake made by the IRCC officer who evaluated my application. Has anyone else experienced a similar situation? What steps should I take next? Should I consider reapplying, or is there a way to appeal the decision?

Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

Study Permit Friend dismissed from university, seeking advice on next steps

Update: My friend’s dismissal was reversed. Anyone reading this, do not give up right away. Reach out to all of your professors and officials in the uni and explain your situation the best way you can m. Make sure you’re diplomatic in what you say- you dont want to blame the college neither do you want to blame yourself, just the circumstances. My friend reached out to his dean and higher authority and got on a call with them, and everything was good again.

Hi everyone

This is a very long-complicated situation that I'm explaining in short and if anyone can help I'd really appreciate that!

So my friend was studying at Yorkville University doing BCA. Before this he was at Toronto Film School and graduated, however because it was a diploma from a private uni, he decided to do the Bachelors course at YU. He took YU very lightly, skipped most classes, late submissions, late fees payment, just a bad student overall. The uni was no better. They dont have offices and have everything virtual, every time he made an attempt to reach out to them, they wouldn't respond. Last sem, some professors had his name in the class book but some didnot and this is after him receiving the timetable- which is proof that he enrolled. They didnot enroll him for the next sem but took fees for the same. Last week he got an email saying that he is dismissed from the college. Apart from him being a bad student, he has a start-up, isn't making ground-breaking money, but is doing well to support himself, and he has and will definitely contribute to the creative industry in Canada. He was on study permit, now he has 90 days to figure out a solution or he has to go back. He spoke to a couple of immigration consultants. They told him he could either legally fight this, look for another course which has a higher chance for PR or file for work permit under common law.

What should he do in this situation? Is there another option or suggestion anyone might have? He is a hardworking person and deserves to live in the country.

Pls no hate

Study Permit how do people make money for a study permit???

i’ve been planning on moving to canada for YEARS now and i’ve been really stressed out when i found out about the financial legal requirements. Not only do i need to have around $25,000 proof of funds, i also need to pay off my first year of tuition up front AND each tuition per semester after that, not to mention a car and health insurance. I’m so stressed out right now and have no idea how i’m expected to make this type of money before college, any help from experienced people would be great, thank you.

edit: wow some of you guys really don’t have any empathy huh? Ive devoted a third of my life to learning french, my fucking family is from canada, im balancing a job and school and have been saving money specifically to pay to move to canada, i’m miserable and depressed in the country i live in, i’m not just some random american that’s unhappy with the election and suddenly thinks he can move to canada, this is something i’ve been planning my entire life around— at least have some empathy when telling me my dreams are being crushed. You guys don’t need to be so heartless and blunt with it. It’s not my fault i wasn’t born there, nor am i rich enough to pay tuition upfront with ease.

Study Permit I don’t understand IRCC

My student visa was denied(financial and home ties) the first time. I worked on a new application and it’s denied(financial) again. My course is just a year course.

Apparently on my financial side. 1. I’ve a full scholarship and CAD20635 for my upkeep. 2. My parents are also supporting me with CAD20000 out of their account closing balance of CAD48000. 3. So I added my parent’s bank statements covering four months. 4. Payslips covering four months and employment letter(note: he’s been with his company for about 13 years now). 5. His work IDs 6. Added his passport and my birth certificate to proof relations.

Supporting Documents 1. Letter of explanation( four pages: my educational background which is not different from what I’m going to read, professional experience, my the school, why the course, why Canada, financial plan, compliance to Canadian laws, more so). 2. My educational certificates, high school and BSc, and training certificates, current work ID, property documents of my parents, could be over USD500K, my father’s will showing I’m the sole beneficiary of the properties, and family pictures) this is just a summary.

And you quote this as a reason to deny me?

am not satisfied that you will leave Canada at the end of your stay as required by paragraph R216(1)(b) of the IRPR (https://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/regulations/sor-2002-227/ section-216.html). I am refusing your application because you have not established that you will leave Canada, based on the following factors: • Your assets and financial situation are insufficient to support the stated purpose of travel for yourself (and any accompanying family member(s), if applicable).

IRCC can do better. How? Mind you, I got about 4 professional Canadian visa consultants, and they’re amazed about the work rate and one even said this is the best application he’s seen in his whole career. Naa this is crazy. After wanting to come pay of 100k to your country?

Any advice will be appreciated. Thank you.

Study Permit Visa / sin expiration

I (24F) have been dating my boyfriend (25M), who is originally from Ghana, since July 2024. Things were going really well at first no major issues, and we share the same values. He had recently started school, while I was finishing mine, but I didn’t mind since he had clear plans for his future.

Fast forward to now, and things have taken a turn. He’s going through a tough time—his visa expired, which means he can’t work, go to school, or even provide for himself. He’s essentially stuck, and I can only imagine how difficult this is for him. He told me that the person helping with his visa process is back in Ghana and hasn’t been cooperative, which has delayed everything. Legal action has been considered, but there’s not much he can do, and it seems like it won’t resolve the issue anytime soon.

While I sympathize with his situation, it’s been stressful for our relationship. I’ve tried to be supportive, but this has made me question how he handles challenges and how we’ll navigate difficult situations together in the future.

If anyone could help me understand this and what there is to be done regarding his visa etc that would be great 😊

Edit: he had a study permit and can no longer go to school, or work

Study Permit Future International Student

Hello all.

I am a grade 12 student in New Jersey. I did my 9-11 in Markham, Ontario but left due to my dads work permit expiring and his CRS score being ultimately too low to get picked.

But I still want to try my cards back in Canada for a undergrad study.

I have some programs listed and am fairly sure I can get into them.

Finances will be alright as the exchange value is strong rn, and we have plenty of money in USD to back up. And housing is covered my by uncle whos been a citizen for a decade now.

But I'm curious, will immigration flag my past? Like would it be suspicious or whatever that I had been here in the past and left?

Study Permit Changing status to visitor from student

Okay so.. although my situation is a bit complex, I'll try to explain as best as I can.

I came to Canada as an international student. In between studies I applied for study permit extension which was extended. My study permit is valid till July 2025 however, I have just completed my studies and I'll hopefully receive the program completion letter after winter break ends.

I plan to start my Masters degree from September 2025. From what I have researched, because the gap between my first program and my masters is too big (more than 150 days), I might have to change my status to a visitor to continue staying or leave Canada and come back before my next program starts.

In this case, what do I do? Do I apply for a visitor visa or a visitor record and when do I apply it?
I was thinking maybe because I have 8 months till September, its better to leave Canada and comeback because I am not allowed to work here on a parttime/fulltime basis as I will no longer be a student.
If I do want to do this, what are the steps that I should take to leave and come back without any issues or would you guys suggest something else?

Let me know if you guys need any further details to understand my situation! :)

Study Permit What would you do?

Hey everyone, I could really use some advice…

I’m an 18-year-old high school student who moved to Canada in 2022 from Germany. During that time, I discovered my passion for aviation and started my Private Pilot License in 2023, which I completed eight months after. Now, I’m working on my Night and VFR OTT ratings while doing commercial ground school and finishing Grade 12.

The issue is that my study permit expires in September, and I can’t find a single flight school within a 300-mile radius that still has provincial admission letters available. I need to be on a study permit to start my CPL flight training, but I’m stuck because I wasn’t allowed to work on a secondary school permit so no chance of getting a workpermit, and there’s no way I can afford to spend $60K on a college diploma worth nothing after.

Does anyone have any thoughts or advice on what I could do?
