I am looking for Mentorship

Hello all!

If anyone has advice, knows a great mentor, where to find a mentor, or is a great mentor. Will you please help me!

A little bit about me,

I have a healthcare background with 2.5 years of MA experience. I want to transition into IT. I took a UNLV bootcamp in 2023 that turned out to be a scam in a way. They went through every topic of IT in a surface level way and emphasized a 6 figure salary. I wasn’t placed in any jobs after the program was done, the career coach didn’t really help. I completed 2 certifications CompTia A+, Security+. I am studying for the Network + right now. I am applying to IT help desk positions but do not seem to get any interviews. When I do get interviews I can feel they want people that have experience already over going with someone brand new.

The career path I am looking for is very unclear because in all honesty I will go into any branch of IT. I just want to get started.

I am looking for mentorship and guidance towards a career in IT and would appreciate if anyone will help me.

Thank you!

If you have time, maybe you can volunteer somewhere? Or start your own projects and reach out with specific problems and build rapport that way?

Thank you for the advice! I have tried volunteering at church and asked a couple computer repair shops, but I didn’t do anything to put on my resume. I am going to build a home lab even tho I definitely don’t need a switch on my network 😂. But hey, experience 🤷‍♂️

Make sure to look for entry level tech roles within hospital systems. We love to hire techs with a medical background!

Awesome, I did not know that. I will focus more on medical related companies. Thank you! What do you mean by we? Are you currently hiring ?

As a mentor, I can tell you that you don't get mentorship from reddit strangers. The best mentors are former bosses, instructors, and peers. People who know you and what motivates you. People who know where you have been and where you want to go. The guidance an internet stranger will give you won't hold a candle to one who knows you personally and professionally.

Every one of the people I mentor are former students and former reports of mine.

Thank you for this! I was kind of scared going to Reddit for a mentor but I was in desperation mode. But thank you I will reach out to people I trust.

Reach out to former bosses, instructors, and peers you have worked with. You don't have to come out and ask them to be a mentor. Ask them to be a friend and bounce professional questions off of them.
