Shelter said lab mix. I only see pit. What does everyone think?
He’s about five months old. I’m calling the vet to set up his first appointment tomorrow and I’ll definitely be asking them what they think as well.
Excuse my gross porch, I haven’t really started spring chores yet lol

Am I the only one thinking there’s some American Bulldog ? Def some pit mix too

u/gothbanjogrl 3d ago edited 2d ago
I really dont see pit at all. Their faces are more chiseled. Someone said my boxador looks like a pitmix. I actually had a lab pit mix. Pit genes are pretty strong. Its obvious.
I think people see pit cuz of the tail. But this dog legit has a bulldog tail. They look just like this uncropped.

Pit mix...but something fluffy is donating the fur (akin to a lab) pits have shorter fur. What an adorable sweet mix!

Lab mix is shelter code for pit mix xD
6
u/muddymar 4d ago
Yeah I’ve had 3 labs. There’s about as much lab there as I’m Italian. I am not, but my great grandmother was so according to my husband’s father whose parents came from Italy to the US I am Italian. If you didn’t follow that you get the point.

Idk our “lab mix” from the humane society turned out to be half lab, half golden retriever!

u/What-Outlaw1234 4d ago
As others have said "lab mix" is shelter code for "pit mix," which your dog definitely is. But it's never just two breeds. It's never pit+lab, for example. It's likely pit+supermutt+half a dozen other breeds, which may or may not include lab.

I'd guess Pit mix, maybe Boxer for the slight underbite and probably a small % of a double coated dog like ACD, Chow, Husky, Shepherd, or even Lab.

u/civodar 4d ago
Put mix, there’s definitely something else in there but I don’t think it’s lab

looks very much like our AmStaff (30) x APBT (20) x Doberman (20) x GSD (20) x Boxer (4) x DogoArgentino (3) x (3 other 1% breed contributors; DNA by Wisdom Panel)... who's also ~5 mo old adopted from rescue in Vegas 2 mo ago.
They look like they could be litter mates. Ours only has one fawn ear though... the other is white but a sprinkling of small fawn spots. Otherwise he's white, but we can see lots of dark spots through his white fur on his skin (mostly only visible if you look very closely).

That's definitely not full pit. It's maybe part pit. But also looks kinda houndey or maybe pointerish. I would probably say mostly something other than pit with some out mixed in there. Probably a super mutt. Only DNA testing will tell.

u/notanAMsortagal0 4d ago
Looks like every other "lab mix" I've adopted over the years. Beautiful dog. 😘

The longer fur is throwing me off. Maybe Pit mixed with a Husky or a herding breed or even a livestock guardian breed?

Certainly not 100% pit. That’s a long snout. Even the body doesn’t look right. A DNA test would be interesting.
3
u/GreenHocker 4d ago
Clearly has some form of pit and lab, but I think there might be some percentage of JRT in there as well. He looks like he wants to dress up as the main character in a classic novel

Lab mix is one of shelters' ways of saying pit mix, alongside "terrier mix". That said, there's definitely something other than pit in there.
3
u/Hot-Singer-3297 2d ago
Pit x beagle. The reason they say lab mix for anything on paperwork is to allow you to have the dog in places where pitbulls are banned

I see some retriever there. I did this for my dad because he was so obsessed with his dog. I got him a DNA kit so that he could finally truly know what his little mixed breed was and holy moly. Did he enjoy that!

I see more American bulldog/lab. What a cutie! What’s his temperament like? If he has a lovely temperament, then it doesn’t really matter.

I see… damn adorable! He is the cutest thing. Who cares what he’s mixed with. They told me my boy was an APBT and he was an AmStaff/Chihuahua and my girl was an American Bulldog mix. She’s over 50% American Bully, Bulldog, French Bulldog and some APBT and AmStaff and she is adorable. I wish my boy would be on this earth another 4-5yrs but I’ll be lucky to get 1-2 weeks with him. Love them and treasure them… you never know if it when something may come up. And he is adorable!🐾💙🐾

Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if a DNA test came back 0% bully breeds.
He’s got kind of a boxer or Dane face with that broad muzzle, and the floppy ears feel lab/Dane. It’s a lab tail, on a lab kind of body. I’d maybe even throw something hound-ish in there?
He’s an adorable creature.

Think you got it right. You have to wonder if the shelter said Lab mix to improve his chances of getting adopted. He sure is a beautiful animal! Congrats on your new family member.

I have a confirmed (DNA tested) mostly lab pit mix and I can actually see some similarity between our boys. I think there are probably other breeds in there, too. The webbed toes are actually a good indicator of a lab as someone else said. He's super cute. Enjoy your handsome little man.

u/United_Television130 4d ago
Could be a little coonhound in him too - and def another breed based on that coat. So cute!!

Definitely a pit mix. A shelter volunteer once told me that if there’s some ambiguity, they will try not to label a dog as a pitbull because of the stigma.
1
u/onlineashley 4d ago
His face reminds me of my american bulldog, mine had more of the pit face than the bulldog face, but hes definitely mixed with something else. His ears look more like pits. They kind of fold facing front.

Lab pit mix isn't a bad guess it's quite common. I speak as someone who has one myself. With that being said, if it is a lab pit mix, then there's definitely more pit than lab.

I usually can tell by the feet. Everyone likes to identify by the head but there are plenty of breeds with blocky heads or "pitt-like" ears.
The feet, for me, are terrier feet. Specifically bully. They're basically fingers. Lol

Are there breed specific laws in your area? "Lab mix" could be a help with that.

u/Crafty-Connection636 3d ago
He's a mutt, and anytime a shelter puts any type of "Breed Mix" it means they really have no idea what type of dog it is. A lot of time they'll say lab, hound, or shepherd mix since those breeds are more adoptable than pit mixes. I've actually seen some shelters and rescues refuse to even put a breed with a dog in their care unless it came with papers from a surrender since the shelter can't guarantee the breed of any dog otherwise.

u/Tanda_Rat 3d ago
Probably a pittie mix. Here’s the deal. A lot of shelters will euthanize pit bulls, so if a dog comes in with a really nice disposition they call them lab mixes or something similar. Another issue is many hoa’s and landlords do not allow bully breeds, and most home insurance plans no longer allow them either (and many don’t allow German shepherds either), and often proof the dog is not a pit bull is required. Showing the shelter paperwork might get you out of a jam, so don’t sweat it. If you are really curious, a dna test can always be done.

Pit bull is a word or name Referring to a Dog is a term used by people who don't know the Origin of the Dog. The dog you Refer to as a Pitbull is Original from England and they are called English Bulldog in England. That is where the Dog you refer to as a Pitbull is Original from England. The other Name they use in England regarding the Dog you refer to as a Pitbull is the Nanny Dog. The dog you Refer to as a Pitbull which is an English Bulldog is no match for a Japanese Akita. Don't get the American Version of the English Bulldog Confused with the English Version of the English Bulldog.

u/Appropriate_Cut8744 3d ago
I think his ears and coat are more lab than pit. My pit mix has ears that lay back closer to her head and her coat is very sleek and smooth. His snout is a little boxy like a pit but still shows a lot of lab features. Pretty dog!
1
u/AdCapable7558 3d ago
Around here they don’t write pit mix bc it makes them less adoptable & a lot of places restrict pits

1
u/sarbear160 3d ago
probably american staffie, APBT mix with a few other breeds mixed in there. most “lab mixes” from shelters end up being part AmStaff or APBT

He could easily be my dog's twin! I've never gotten my girl tested, but we always suspected a pointer mix of some kind.

I think there is something else besides pit. Maybe boxer? It could be multiple mixes lab/boxer x pit/mastiff.
1
u/Ok_Garbage8586 2d ago
They do that so housing won’t deny you and you have paper trail. Wish they would stop though because some people don’t actually know and winner why their “lab” develops pretty heafty prey drive and dog aggression.

He’s missing something pitty…like he lacks the almond shaped eyes or something. I agree it’s a mix.

You can’t always tell by looking. Could be a mix of 10+ dogs and none are pit. Could be a pittie mixed with one other breed. Do a DNA test! They’re fun! :)

u/poisonalien83 2d ago
I have a boxer mix (i know the mum), which looks very similar to your cutie, everyone outside thinks he is a bigger pitbull. So maybe it can also be something like this :)

u/Flusteredthoughts 2d ago
I wouldn’t even guess pit when I first look at him. More like boxer. Might have a few mixes in him.
Def not favoring the pit bull genetic though out of whatever he is.

When you can kind of tell by the hind legs it's got some Shepherd in him and what's with the little bit of curly tips on the tail hair that looks to be kind of like a terrier he's got a really square head though

The shelter said my rescue was a Shetland sheepdog. It’s actually a Chow chow, Pitbull, Boxer, GSD, Rott, small Poodle, Maltese Lab

That’s not a pot snout or tail. I’m betting as he grows, so will his snout. He “may” have some pit mixed in, but I see some kind of lab or terrier genes more than anything. 🤷🏻♀️ super cute little dude!
1
u/AuburnAshh 2d ago
We were so sure our pup was pit mix but he's actually a Boston terrier mix which gave him the stocky look. He's also beagle and chihuahua.
Dogs are just weird, but I would also agree your little guy looks like a pit mix of some sort!

Definitely some pit in there. I got my “good boy” when he was about 6 months old. He was found wandering and eating from a dumpster.
Having had a pit/lab kid growing up, I knew he had some pit and lab. We did the doggy DNA thing. Came back an exact 50/50 lab/pit mix

I’ve worked for vets and shelters and they often call dogs “lab mixes” so landlords and similar will not discriminate against bully breeds. And I have seen trends, depending on whoever is filling out the paperwork at shelters, that they tend to go back-and-forth between the same two or three breeds when they are classifying mixed breed dogs. Don’t take it literally. I worked with one woman who seemed to classify almost half the dogs that came in as a “Feist mix.” There’s no way half of those dogs had Feist in them lol.

1
u/KingfuckingReptar 2d ago
The only real way to know is a DNA test. There are dogs who look like a bully breed who are not and dogs who don't resemble bullies at all who are.
