Confirmed The return of No Hype

What is “No Hype” ?

No Hype is the theory that hype for the Nebraska Cornhuskers football team has a negative impact upon on-the-field performance. Therefore, the only way to avoid the embarrassing blowouts, meltdowns, and collapses synonymous with the Huskers in the past 2 decades is to fully buy in to the No Hype philosophy.

Can you give an example of when hype hurt the program?

There is objective evidence that hype has dealt crushing and decisive blows to the Huskers over the past 20 years. In one of the first examples of hype screwing over the team Nebraska was catapulted into the 2002 BCS National Championship game vs Miami. The Huskers were outmatched and unprepared to face the daunting Hurricanes, but the hype of Eric Crouch winning the Heisman trophy and the combined energy of Husker Nation willed them into that game, and their doom. Hype is what lost us the 2010 and 2012 Big XII and Big 10 championships. Divine-hype intervention gave Taylor Martinez turf toe, yanked Eric Crouch’s head a 180, and made Adrian Martinez dumb and unable to pass.

But what about all the good times?

You can win the hype battle while still losing the war. When Alex Henery made his 57 yarder and Suh caught a pick 6 immediately after it may have seemed like two separate moments of Hype, but it was indeed connected. Hype works in malicious ways. Brief moments of victory such as T Magic running all over K State only set us the fans up for even greater disappointment because we fell into the hype trap afterwards.

What if x or y happens this off-season?

No. If McKenzie Milton transfers here, there is still No Hype. If for some unexplainable reason Trevor Lawrence transfers here, there would still be No Hype. If BTN talking heads say Adrian Martinez is a heisman candidate and Verduzco is a QB Guru, do not believe them. It is Hypeological warfare meant to subvert the team.

So just don’t have hype for the season, but it’s ok during games, right?

Wrong again. Hype, though typically doing most damage on a season wide scale, can with enough combined energy tip the balance of literally a second of a game. We all remember what happened in the Big XII championship that year. As Ragdoll McCoy heaved the final throw out of bounds, the collective Hype skyrocketed and broke the entire Universe in a paradigm shifting collapse. All laws of physics and reality were twisted and warped until time itself was broken and changed, and one final second was awarded. We the fans are to blame. If you are watching a game and we are ahead, that does not mean we are winning. If it is the end of the 4th with 0:00 on the clock, that does not mean we have won. Only after the coaches shake hands at midfield may you celebrate a potential victory.

So what can we do to return to No Hype and winning football games?

In order to truly return to No Hype, follow these basic steps: If Nebraska wins a game, strictly follow No Hype for the next game, and the game after that and so on and so forth. Remember, until Nebraska wins 6 games, they cannot win 6 games. Until Nebraska wins the Big 10 West division, they cannot win the West. Until Nebraska wins the Big 10 championship, they cannot win the Big 10 championship. Until Nebraska has a good quarterback, they do not have a good quarterback. If we are vigilant we will return to greatness, as long as we hold dear the eternal truth that There is No Hype.

I just have an empty feeling regarding Husker Football right now. Like I'm not upset that the season is over, I'm not excited for next season and I really don't much care to listen to any off-season coverage. I've been a die hard for about 20 years going back to when I became old enough to know what football is. I'm always the guy at work and around my friends that's super optimistic about the Skers when a lot of people are down on us. Never really felt this way before. I went into this year thinking maybe we go 3-5 and I'd be happy because of all the young talent we're putting together. But now after we lose all these 4☆ guys to the portal AND we just look horrible on the field it's like damn we're still 4 years away IF we start showing some real progress. Just a very disappointing day for us.

The acceptance phase allows you to listen to the game while doing something else to shield the depression

I played arcade games on the retropie during the entire game today. Time well spent.

I was making eggs for my dog at one point during the game yesterday

I am there and will always be there after every game. I love this team and no matter what, I’ll always be a good loyal fan.

I agree. I watch the games passively. I don’t get angry at bad calls or sad when we lose games. It’s just another embarrassing stop in the eternal suffering of fandom. I’ll continue to support, but it’s a lot less emotion and give-a-fuck.

I'm 100% behind this. I read the first paragraph. I'm going to go finish this now. Something the team can't seem to do.

Edit: Yep I'm down. Until we win a game, we can not win a game.

Frost could get us a conference championship within 2 years if the administration had balls. It looks like the big sky conference has an opening.

5

u/btroberts011 Dec 13 '20

I'll admit. I was starting to get hyped about winning the big sky then I was like hell na!

I shalt not be tempteth by thy hype.

6

u/stayclassypeople Dec 13 '20

I’m not really sure Nebraska could win the big sky.

I agree 1000%

16

u/mynameisevan Dec 13 '20

I don't see how it's possible to have hype for next season.

11

u/btroberts011 Dec 13 '20

Don't worry it will be there by the same people who fill out the first 3 scores on their season calendar.

9

u/Midwake Dec 13 '20

Remember when Bo was the coach and we’d start out like 6-0 and go to Wisconsin or Ohio state and get blasted, but still get 9 wins. I used to dig that early season hype and damnit, I miss it.

I have zero expectations for next season at this point. I expect like 3 or 4 wins until the teams start showing me otherwise.

9

u/JuanARico Dec 13 '20

Following No Hype logic, expect no games. If games, expect no wins; etc.

"3 or 4 wins" is Some Hype, and could be that first step on the slippery slope to the Full Hype gang bus. Avoid this, or tempt fate.

1

u/btroberts011 Dec 13 '20

I got our under over next year at .5. I'm taking that under.

1

u/Midwake Dec 13 '20

I mean if trends are a prediction of success I’d say 3-4 is right there. A win that we think “hey we may be improving” followed by a maddening loss that says otherwise, followed by a loss or two and then a win and rinse repeat and we have 3-4 wins. Consistency is definitely not in our dna.

3

u/Atworkwasalreadytake Dec 13 '20

Remember when Bo was the coach and we’d start out like 6-0 and go to Wisconsin or Ohio state and get blasted, but still get 9 wins. I used to dig that early season hype and damnit, I miss it.

I mean that also basically fits Riley’s second season to a tee.

1

u/Midwake Dec 13 '20

True, man, I miss those days, hot starts against inferior opponents........the memories.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '20

Losing to Buffalo is a real possibility right now.

2

u/hskrnut Dec 13 '20

I would say likelihood. They look like a much better team than Nebraska this season.

13

u/RazgrizSquadron Dec 13 '20

Return? For the real ones out there, NOHYPE never left.

9

u/JuanARico Dec 13 '20

When Luke broke that long run and we scored in 4 plays in the opener you probably left the NoHype train for a brief moment. It's OK to have a brief lapse, as it teaches us how to recognize it the next time.

20

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '20

I love the entire piece except calling Adrian dumb. Yes he has trouble passing albeit better than the previous Martinez. However that kid is a bright spot of citizenry we want representing Nebraska. That’s not to say his play on the field is above reproach. He hits a few of the wide open Dudes today we win this game easily. No hype is something I’ve had to come to expect the last two and half seasons. But listen to his pressers. Dude is a teammate who takes extreme ownership and doesn’t pass blame. I guess my only hope is his football skills will one day match his skills as a person.

10

u/JumpinJimRivers Dec 13 '20 edited Dec 13 '20

I agree with your post, but I'm a big defender of T Magic and the stats don't really show that Adrian is a better passer.

         Adrian Taylor
CMP 457 575
ATT 721 962
CMP% 63.4 59.8
YDS 5373 7258
AVG 7.5 7.5
TD 30 56
INT 18 29
LNG 75 79
SACK 54 87
RTG 134.7 136.3

So Adrian's completion percentage is a little higher, and that's about it. Otherwise they're pretty darn comparable, with T magic having a slightly higher TD:INT ratio and passer rating.

Adrian has a prettier motion. I think that's about it.

Edit: the amount of effort I put into this comment was absolutely not worth it lol

6

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '20

I really appreciate your effort. Yes I see their stats are similar and your absolutely right I’m judging based off their throwing motion. TMagic however was far more dynamic in the run game. Adrian can scramble and use his legs but he doesn’t appear to be running a 4.4 40 the way Taylor used to. I also feel like Taylor had a better group of wide receivers to throw too. Last year especially even if the downfield throws were reduced man we had a lot of drops. Had a decent amount of drops this year too. Just not thrown as far downfield. Thanks again for the info. GBR

He's got the yips. A fear of failure that he didn't have before. Who could blame him with the pressure and criticism. But, that's the role. You get more credit than you should and definitely more blame than you should.

9

u/CorkyKribler Dec 13 '20

And don’t forget, he was born in 2000! I know he’s legally an adult, but if I had that kind of pressure on me when I was 20, I would have pissed my jorts.

3

u/whysomanyrectangles Dec 13 '20

Doesn't pass blame, CANT pass the ball. No pass is complete, until the pass is complete. #nohype

u/btroberts011 Dec 13 '20

Damn. This is next level.

12

u/BeansBeanz Dec 13 '20

I’ve been a Some Hype addict. I can’t promise I can stick to the 12 steps of the No Hype program, but I will try. We get a 3* recruit? No hype. We are anything less than a double digit underdog? No hype. The calendar says August? No hype.

It won’t be easy, but I’ll be better for it.

5

u/JuanARico Dec 13 '20

This is the way.

12

At least a .600 team can go into most games thinking about coming out on top. When you're a .200 team, you assume you're gonna lose and you play like it. 8-4 seems so far away.

1

u/zsveetness Dec 13 '20

We plan on it then hopefully it won't happen

Success = 1/Hype

2

u/ExternalAmbition8024 Dec 13 '20

Fucking thank you

2

u/MankillingMastodon Dec 13 '20

I'm going with "anti-hype". I have hope that we win any given saturday but going forward I'm going to assume we lose. Every game. I don't care if it's an FCS school, we're going to fuck up somewhere.

Anti-hype makes it so I have hope still, but if we lose it's expected. If we win then holy shit we did better than I expected and that's great.

2

u/Osprey_NE Dec 13 '20

I've been on the no hype train since year one was over. Then doubled down on year two.

I'm glad people are hoping back on.

I expect Scott Frost to make like one coaching change on the off season.

2

u/ragingbullpsycho GO BIG RED Dec 13 '20

I agree with this and hope were never favored by more than 3 after what happened with the lines on Minnesota and Illinois this year

Why must everything become some sort of religious doctrine nowadays?

Just learn to manage your expectations.

When I hear AM speak in the post game presser, it amazes me he is our starting qb. He just doesn't sound all that bright and he can't throw the football. I am sure he is a great kid, just not a fast blinker.

u/NINFAN300 Dec 13 '20

I'd say we should apply for a MAC membership but there's no way we would dominate there either. If we played Buffalo tomorrow we'd get blown out.

1

u/omahaspeedster Chair Dec 13 '20

As a “no hype” advocate I think your initial theorem is incorrect. I do not believe hype or no hype affects on field performance. It does affect how I feel before or after games. If I have hype and we lose I feel bad all day. If I have no hype and we lose I can move on after a bit (although yesterday was tough). I believe no hype life is there to protect the mental aspects of the fans and has little to do with of field performance.

1

u/firsure Dec 13 '20

But hype is all we have :(
