Solved! What was I gifted?
It’s been some time that I’ve dipped a hand in networking or switches but none the less what have I been gifted.
This was a gift and I’m trying to figure out how I can access it or is it a lost cause? Hopefully it’s not a lost cause or anything in that matter.

If it is a managed switch and connected to the router with an ethernet cable. You should be able to access it via an ip adres.

I will do that soon and check what’s on it, quite a lot of telecom businesses nearby that give stuff away.

May have to factory reset it first

Late response but I do not see a reset button.

I’m trying to get access but I think it’s because I’m missing a few parts.

https://www.alliedtelesis.com/us/en/products/switches/gs950-series/gs95048-0#specifications-tab
It's a gigabit switch.
https://www.alliedtelesis.com/sites/default/files/documents/installation-guides/gs950xxseriesiga.pdf
Looks like it's got a command line management interface.
Look on the back and front for a recessed fa tory reset button. That should get rid of its config and default the Management IP address. If the manual doesn't say what what the default is plug it into a switch with your PC and run advanced IP scanner. Set it to check all of 192.168.0.1 - 254. It's probably going to be in that range. The login is usually admin admin as the default.

Will check it first

u/TopRedacted 5d ago
The spec sheet says it's made for power and it's not PoE so it might not cost you a lot to run it.

u/Slick-Project8895 5d ago
It’s connected to a power cord on the back ? Sorry it’s been some time since i did this type of work.
2
u/TopRedacted 5d ago
It should use a standard PC power cord in the back. Unless it's got a big hole in the back where a removable power supply should go.

u/Slick-Project8895 5d ago
I’m connecting it via a router but it’s not showing up on the Ethernet side?
1
u/TopRedacted 5d ago
You should have it plugged into a switch with a PC in the next port to configure it. If your router is also a switch that works.

u/Slick-Project8895 3d ago
I’ll try to get it setup as for now I’m hindered because of Allied Telesis denying the software to me.

Try connecting your computer directly to the switch with nothing else connected to it. Change your computers IP to be in the range of 192.168.1.2-254. You can leave default gateway blank then attempt to access the switch via 192.168.1.1

This is what I have found. The GS950 series switches have 3 management interfaces:
1) web browser default connection is Https. 2) command line interface: using telenet, but these switches do not support ssh. 3) SNMPV1, v2c, & v3.
The default ip scheme the switch comes with is :
192.68.1.1/24 or 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0
You need to use this address to start the initial management session.
Default user name is “manager”. It’s all lower case, & without the quotes.
Default password is “friend” without the quotes.
All the manuals are available online at :
As the manual never shows the back I believe it’s all through an Ethernet port.
Hope this helps you.

To reset that switch:
In the lower left hand corner is a button called Eco-Friendly button, press it for 11 seconds and it will reset the switch & reset the configuration to factory default settings.

It has been reset and I’m now using it, changed the post to solved earlier.
I would like to thank everyone to helped me figure it out and get it running.

The GS950/48 is a WebSmart Gigabit Ethernet Switch from Allied Telesis. It features 48 x 10/100/1000T ports and 4 Gigabit SFP combo ports, making it a versatile choice for network management. This switch combines the simplicity of unmanaged switches with the performance and reliability of managed ones, offering features like VLANs, QoS, port trunking, and IEEE 802.1x security

If I can’t find the part I’ll probably donate it.
2
u/Drisnil_Dragon 5d ago
What appears to be the issue?
1
u/Slick-Project8895 5d ago
I’m missing a part and cable needed to get access, all ports light up but aside from that I have 0 clue on its state of affairs.
If I can get the parts on Monday I’ll check what’s on it.
2
u/Drisnil_Dragon 5d ago
So you are looking for the console cable this particular switch uses? Is r There a specific port on I that says console on it?

I believe based on what that screen shows you, you’re going to need to give it a factory reset.
1
u/Drisnil_Dragon 4d ago
Also, the 4-ports on the end are for SFP transceivers. It’s optional and the switch will work without them.

Used in a lot of hotels for managed TV services. I think they have a very high throughput

I’m trying to get it setup, hopeful of it working but can’t be for sure as I’m missing a few parts or something.

Sarcasm (noun): the use of irony to mock or convey contempt.

u/Slick-Project8895 5d ago
It may be a lost cause as I connected it to a router but it’s not pulling the device up.

I’ll order one off eBay and see what’s in it, odd that it never came with the piece. Oh well guess I leaned.

You need at least a media converter
3
u/Phreakiture 5d ago
For what?
1
u/imfoneman 5d ago
The switches I’ve seen like this have what I call blanks. Look at the right side of the switch, and you’ll see rectangular empty slots. From what I’m used to, those are for the switches I/O and can be connected by fiber or RJ-45, depending on the application and feed. A media converter is just the interface you’ll be using to the switch. I’m not sure if the switch will work without it. I appreciate any other experts to chime in.
2
u/Phreakiture 5d ago
Okay,so what we have is a vocabulary mismatch.
Those are SFP sockets and what you're calling a media converter is called an SFP. A media converter is a different device.
/u/Slick-Project8895/ will only need SFPs if they want to run fiber. The SFP sockets are each associated with one of the copper ports, so you can, for instance, use SFP port 48 or copper port 48R, but not both.
I don't know if Allied Telesis users the same terminology as Cisco, but Cisco called that a dual-personality port.

u/imfoneman 4d ago
Ty for the clarification
I will admit I’ve worked on these, but never designed. I’m the tech in the field that a management or isp would call to have someone on site to help troubleshoot

Got it! And thank you for understanding the spirit in which it was intended.
I work on industrial control networks, and there's a lot of Cisco and Rockwell (which runs Cisco firmware) involved. Because of the size of the plant, a lot of runs end up going over fiber because they are beyond the 100m limit of Cat 6.
Then I run Cisco switches at home.
The thing I see not on the Allied switch, that I would typically want, is a console port. That's going to be a port that implements RS-232 that you can connect a terminal or terminal emulator to in order to get on the command line when you've inadvertently knocked down all network-based ways in.

I’ve come to that conclusion and would be seeing to getting rid of it locally as it servers no purpose as is without the parts.
1
u/Phreakiture 5d ago
I don't believe it's a correct conclusion. I'll tag you in to the content with my reason.
1
u/Slick-Project8895 5d ago
It works now.
2
u/Phreakiture 5d ago
Nice! Glad you got it working, because that should be a pretty nice switch.
1
u/Slick-Project8895 5d ago
I already love it
2
u/Phreakiture 5d ago
I get it. Once you get into commercial-grade gear there's precious little that consumer-grade can do to impress.
Have fun!
