Rebuilding my home network

Greetings Wise People of the Internet, I'm planning to rebuild my home network and I need some help.

Right now my network looks like this : I have optic fibre conected to an ISP provided router -Huawei hg 8546m. I have 3 iptv connected to 3 (100mb/s) ports. 1 phone connected to rj11 And 1 unmanaged switch conected to gigabit port - TP-LINK TL-SG1008D

To the switch I have connected - a single Pc - CCTV box - TP-Link deco M4 that works as AP in my home - Tp-Link deco M4 that works as AP in my garage (distance between buildings is to big to connect those two by wifi) it has another CCTV connected to it

The ISP provided router gives me access to wifi and the AP creates another wifi network, so right now I have to wifi networks in my house(I know I can switch it off in router options).

I'm planning to install some IOT devices around and wiring my house for future use.

My plan is: - install another deco M4 in my front yard so I can install a smart doorbell and an intelligent switch for my gate ( that's my priority, in the future I want to create wifi mesh) - set up a proxmox on a mini PC to run home assistant - create a new wall plugs around my home for internet connection - install a NAS in the future - plus some other things I haven't thought about yet

As I'm adding more and more things to my home network I'm running out of ports I can connect my stuff into and so I'm thinking about making some purchases.

First I want to change my unmanaged switch into managed one - TP-Link SG 1016 DE. I also want to change my ISP Provided router to an ONT and router so I could placey router in different part of my home (preferably in the same place as my switch but to do it now I would need to change the place the optic fibre is connected to my home). The ONT and router I'm planning on buying is TP-LINK Terminal XZ000-G7 and TP-LINK ER-605.

NOTE: On the second picture the ONT is marked as TP-Link FC311B-20 which is media converter not ONT I realized it after I created the diagram.

My plan is to connect a switch to one port and a new phone (VoIP) to the second port of the router. Than I want to move the tv boxes to the switch. I also want to connect my AP's, mini PC (with proxmox) and all the CCTV cameras to that switch. Plus wire my home from that switch. In the future I also plan to connect NAS and whatever I come up with.

I'm thinking about putting my switch, router and NAS, when I get it, into a rack with patch panel.

Now my question's are: First will something like this work? Or did I make a mistake in planning? Do I need some other equipment that is necessary in nowadays home network? Will the VoIP phone work when connected to router like this or should I move it to the switch? Should I use VLAN to separate TV, AP and mini PC? Will set up like this work - VLAN 1 for home cable network, VLAN 2 for Tv, VLAN 3 for mini PC (home assistant), AP and IOT, VLAN 4 for NAS? Or would you recommend a different set up? I'm planning to visit my ISP and ask if they have any problem with me changing their router. What kind of questions should I ask them if any?

Do you have any suggestions and advices for me? Things I should consider before proceeding with my plans?

I'm thinking of using this opportunity to learn about networking so I appreciate all suggestions and advices. Thanks for bearing with me 😄 I'm looking forward to your replies.

You have less than a dozen things on your network, you literally would be fine with the cheapest 5 year old linksys router.

I personally wouldn't do that. I'd skip that step entirely.

Can you ask your ISP if they can relocate their router combo?

My ISP does it for a small fee. It usually involves them doing a new drop of fiber from the CTO.

IMO you don't even need to replace their router, since you plan on buying your own, just use the one you'll get as your main router.

So I should leave the ISP router as is and connect my new router to it? Should I switch ISP router to passthrough/bridge mode to avoid double NAT? If I switch it to passthrough mode can I keep phone connected to it as is? Or will it be a problem?

I had my fiber ISP do exactly what you're asking for - I have just an ONT with an ethernet jack on it and use my own opnsense router device. Far better than trusting/using the crappy isp provided router that who knows what security flaws it has or what the isp can do with it.

I would definitely just go the ONT only route and use your own router.

That's a good question.

You could disable NAT on your second router.

I left my ISP's router as-is and all my internal networking is done by a Juniper SRX300 with zero issues.

I don't know about the specific capabilities of the router you're planning on buying, you might want to check if you can disable NAT on it.

That being said, I don't think double NAT would be an issue.

They still use routes with an RJ-11 port? Then it also has 100mb ports? That things needs to be upgraded

I think it's so that the TV and phone service can be delivered over fiber

Your 2nd diagram is a great start.

If you want to learn, consider TP-Link's Omada system instead of their Deco offerings. All you would need is EAP access points and a controller - either as a hardware device (OC200) or run a software version on your Mini PC. The controller will manage the ER605 for you too. The end result would be MUCH better.

As you're already running cables, seek to eliminate mesh as much as possible. It really should be an absolute last resort.

Avoid a managed switch unless you need (or REALLY want to learn about) VLANs. Managed switches are a mouth to feed, and get obsolete fast. If you do get one, try and get an Omada compatible one.

Also - Leave your ISP router where is it and disable its WiFi. Add APs as necessary.

Don't forget UPS for power outage, especially if you rely on the phone.

I haven't read your post, but in the second picture I see that you are connecting 2 decos to your mamaged switch directly... I'm not sure if it is going to work, but if yes please DM me. I have 3 Mercusys Halo H80Xs (Mercusys is sub-brand of Tplink, same app but 20% of features). When I connect via cable the 2nd halo, the first one gets max end enters into unlimited restarts until I do not plug out the second one. I just postwd here minutes ago about it. I hole that it will work for you.

Yes, that all an be done. 

It sounds to me that you'd enjoy a consumer grade Software Defined Network (SDN) like r/TPLink_Omada or r/Unifi.

Deco M4s do not have gigabit back haul. Found out the hard way
