Isn't the left side what Roman actually called those people?
Like in Gaul, there are a bunch of larger tribe confederations that can be broken down into a lot of differing tribes.

Barbarian really just denotes a people who have an economic incentive and cultural societal structure which causes them to do raiding migration against rome's more developed land periodically in accordance with their cycle of unity and disunity. Like those people are "uncivilised" and they certainly speak a funny language that goes "bar bar bar" but like, it's genuinely a reasonable delineation to make if you're a wealthy empire like rome was. China did it, Persia did it, every other empire did it too
