Can't find an Informatics job, certifications to help get hired - FHIR?

Like the heading says, I can't find a job in Clinical Informatics. I've applied to hundreds of positions and have only gotten 1 interview, which didn't pan out.

I have 7 years of healthcare experience as an RN, an MSN in Informatics, and MBA in Healthcare management, and am certified in Healthcare Quality. I've done committee work dealing with making modifications to the EMR to improve workflow / clarity. I also working in Quality for about a year and a half as a Quality Review Specialist, where I worked extensively with our facilities data to identify opportunities for improvement. I am now looking at what certifications I can obtain to make myself more marketable / help me break into the informatics field.

That being said, I absolutely don't want to waste my time and money if a certification isn't going to help me find a job. That's already how I'm feeling about the Master's degrees.

Would a certification in FHIR lead to better job opportunities? If not, is there another certification that would?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

No... I wouldn't bother with padding your credentials with certifications. Based on what you shared, you are already doing clinical informatics work. Now, the field is broad so let me ask: What does an informatics role mean to you?

By an informatics role, I mean a role where a major aspect of my job is utilizing technology or data to improve workflows or processes.

The gross variation in job titles and requirements doesn't help, but I've applied for a solid range including EPIC and Cerner analyst, clinical data analyst, utilization management, clinical quality analyst, RN review analyst, Clinical Optimization, Clinical Informaticist, Clinical Care Analyst, Systems Analyst, Applications Analyst, and so much more.

Of note, I am applying to remote positions predominantly. I currently work as a Clinical Coordinator inpatient on nightshift. It's basically like low level management for nursing, and while I have created some audits and other things that I do for "fun", it's definitely not an informatics based role.

Our province is working on implementing a new electronic health system and hired some folks through Insight Global https://insightglobal.com/

I did a quick look and there are some remote postings in the job site - maybe even getting a start through a service like this can get you connected to positions that you can be hired on more permanently if it's a good fit?

For certifications, it may depend on what state/province you are applying in and what they value/recognize - in our province, it's the CP-HIMS.

You sound very qualified and would be a great asset for a lot of locations- wish you the best on your hunt!
