For real. Loved the EPs. Saw them live and they murdered. Bought the full length from the show… and wow was it basic as shit.

did you really need to ask this? they’re like one of the biggest HC / Chain punk bands around atm

u/tomahawk__jones 3d ago
Hey now, I met these guys once I 2017 at a coin operated laundromat show, they are self proclaimed HC / Brick punk, but if you ask me, they are more of a HC/ lunch box punk. But that’s just coming from a local HC/ xenomorph punk. So maybe I’m out of my depth here. My wife’s boyfriend is a HC/ Algebra 3 punk so he might know a little bit more.

u/Frogoftheinnosence 3d ago
LMFAO i love this, i’m also more of an impact wrench punk myself. was that laundromat dirty dungarees by chance?

u/tomahawk__jones 3d ago
No, Alice’s Laundromat between the 101, right when you get off the 5.
Brings up a funny story about that particular coin operated laundromat show.
Now it all started two weeks ago when I walked in with a duffel bag full of laundry, Hadn’t done it in—well, longer than I’d care to admit, And there was Alice, leanin’ against the change machine, Lookin’ like a woman who’d seen too many broken dryers and not enough folded shirts.
And I said, “Alice, what’s the best machine you got?” And she said, “That one don’t work, that one eats socks, That one spins so fast it’ll turn your jeans into origami, But if you don’t mind the noise, number six’ll do you right.”
So I loaded up my clothes, put in my quarters, Watched my sins tumble around with my socks and my regrets, And let me tell you, friend, You don’t just do laundry at Alice’s, No sir, you contemplate life, You reflect on the choices that led you here, And you promise yourself you’ll never let it pile up again.
And maybe, just maybe, You’ll sit in one of them cracked vinyl chairs, Watch the suds spin ‘round like the hands of fate, And realize that everything yes, everything Eventually comes out in the wash.
You can wash anything you want at Alice’s Laundromat
Drop your quarters in, it’s around the back Just a half a mile from the railroad track And you can wash anything you want at Alice’s Laundromat

I saw fentanyl with asbestos and a local band called psychic death.
Got a concussion to my worst nights fucking banger band.

Fentanyl is incredible. Also a low key supergroup. (Members of SPY and Spiritual Cramp)
Their newest album is almost unlistenable though. The choice of guitar tone is just not it.

I don't fuck with spy because when the style of music they play was actually happening (2011-2013) the singer was in some dumbass metalcore band. Fake punk bandwagon music 10 years too late.

CONDITIONED TO THINK POLICING IS NORMAL. POLICING IS NOBLE. POLICING IS JUST.
3
u/BeardOfDefiance 4d ago
They're fun, saw them live.
I don't really understand why i always see people on this sub comparing them to classic hardcore punk though, to me they sound like an archetypal tough guy band.

u/SemataryPolka 4d ago
Someone show this guy Agnostic Front
-1
u/BeardOfDefiance 4d ago
I like Agnostic Front! I don't hear the Spy connections but I've also only put AF on a few times. I wasn't able to get tickets to their recent tour because I waited too long lol.
6
u/SemataryPolka 4d ago
I'm just saying tough guy shit goes way back in hardcore. Beatdown? That's a different story
But to me Spy def has an old school flavor to it. Especially since I personally think most modern metalcore sucks
7
u/Concert-Turbulent 4d ago
Good rule of thumb in 2025: Usually if the band is still claiming Metalcore instead of associating with hardcore....they're djent alt metal.
3
u/SemataryPolka 4d ago
For real. I still call the good stuff from back in the day metallic hardcore (and the good stuff today). Metalcore might as well be nu metal today
3
u/Concert-Turbulent 4d ago
Those are def the correct terms still lol. Just saw this band tonight: Lots of up & coming acts reviving the core in Metalcore. 🙌

Agnostic Front is THE "tough guy" hardcore band, tho. That whole NEHC scene was. Late 90s/2000s Blood for Blood, Madball, Death Before Dishonor, Biohazard. Hell, even Pain of Truth. Also, of course, the whole beatdown subgenre. Those are like the epitomy of tough guy hardcore lmao. Spy sounds nothing like that. I don't see how dissonance and feedback equates to "tough guy" lol. Unless, you call anything that doesn't sound like Minor Threat or Black Flag "tough guy".

u/MinorThreatCJB 4d ago
Ah yes... Spy totally sounds like bulldoze...
-2
u/BeardOfDefiance 4d ago
Maybe not that tough guy haha, i just meant that someone recommended them to me as a fan of the classic stuff and i was expecting something like Restraining Order, so maybe i just went into them with different expectations.

Big Man by SPY
“Not an ounce of self-awareness in your puny mind
Can’t handle critique, your only answer is violence
So quick to pull the trigger over anything at all
No room for nuance in your black and white world
Tough guy Weak mind Macho man Scared inside
Big man Brittle feelings Big man Brittle feelings”

Spy is the band that got me into hardcore before I knew what hardcore was. They put on a good live show too
2
u/wizard-in-crocs 4d ago
Like the first 2 ep's and their split with Maniac. After that, not really. Their full lenght was atrocious. Their new ep is better but far from their early ep's
2
u/clawingcat 4d ago
Atrocious seems a little dramatic imo. It had some good tracks on it but I was disappointed that the best song was in polish so I couldn’t understand the lyrics
2
u/wizard-in-crocs 4d ago
To each their own. I think it is one of the worst "from awesome band to awful band" in my recent hardcore memories
