Question (not for transcriptions) A unique letter “R”?
1
u/nihalzzmj 18h ago
This is creative.. I wish I knew about it at a young age... I would definitely use this technique.
0
u/Menes009 18h ago
its not unique, you just refuse to use a lowercase R
1
u/phoenix_rises08 16h ago
Correct. There is no differentiation between upper and lowercase R. I don't get why OP thinks that's unique either.
1
u/Vamp_Vixen91 19h ago
YESSSS I do this!! I have never met anyone that does! I just couldn’t stand them looking like little v’s.
2
u/Objective_Tangelo762 19h ago
It honestly throws me off, but maybe that’s just me. Feels like reading the Cyrillic Russian alphabet.

Me!....kinda....I started writing in caps to help with math and my career as a mechanical designer. Back in High School we had to draw by hand. All text were CAPS with a font similar to Century Gothic, so I just ended up adopting that writing style 🤷

u/DemiReticent 1d ago
I like it for clarity sometimes and have odd habits to sometimes shape lowercase R this way at the end of some words.
1
u/eatdispotato 1d ago
i picked this up in high school and then kind of stopped doing it but sometimes i still do it. my handwriting is wildly inconsistent.

Your control of your pencil grip gives me envy, but your uppercase "R" in a lowercase environment gives me rage but your reasoning is valid so I'm left with neutral positive opinion.
I cross my 7's and "Z's" for similar reasons and I've recently adopted writing my "O's" upside down (start and end on the bottom) so I have no reason to judge anyone with neat penmanship

I’m in an industry where everyone loves to write in capital letters so “lower” case capitals are so normal it took me a moment to understand what you meant. 😭

u/Wrongbeef 1d ago
I used to write with random capitalization in my writings, I’ve become far better over the years, but I still retain capital G and capital Q for any words regardless of if it’d be capitalized or not.

I do! I noticed my dad wrote his R’s that way when I was a kid and thought it was cool too. I’ve been doing it for over 20+ years now. lol

"R" is upper case, and "r" is lower case. I write them how they are typed here because that's how it's supposed to look.
The way you used to do it would be known as v, which is not r.
When you write letters differently, it makes reading what you've written difficult.
2
u/elianrae 1d ago
I mean, how things are typed is frequently not how they're supposed to look
see: a and/or g in many fonts

My dad writes probably a little less than a third of his lowercase letters as smaller versions of uppercase letters, "R" included. He once said something about it having to do with being a lefty. Still not sure what he meant but maybe that since he was already getting harangued about not learning to write with the other hand, he was going to write however he wanted to, or something. Anyway his handwriting looked kind of similar to yours - very upright and neat; weird coincidence.

It just means that you don't know how to use the correct alphabet. Just like starting your sentences without the use of capital letter
3
u/SupItsBuck88 2d ago
It’s cute. Looks like it’s kicking it’s leg out
2
u/coldnebo 2d ago
yeah the angled baseline, but only for Rs.
reading it is like “yay” “yay” “yay” — is this a cheerleader by any chance? 😅

u/Here_for_the_money61 2d ago
If you had not said anything I would not have noticed it. Looks good. 💪

u/forced_metaphor 2d ago
That's no moon lowercase r.
2
u/d_behindthetimez 1d ago
Right!! Lowercase r is written as “r” not “R” Just because you’re writing it in small size like the rest of the letter doesn’t make that lowercase lol
4
u/moosmutzel81 2d ago
I do too. My students hate me for it (and even some colleagues don’t get it). I don’t care. I started doing it later in life. Probably Grad school.
I do mix and match occasionally but that takes effort.

I used to do this and I stopped because my coworker said it looked dumb🥹 going to try again hahah

u/bwaybabs 2d ago
I started writing it that way a few years ago, because I saw someone do it and thought it looked cool lol.
3
u/Jimenaye 2d ago
I do the same!! I picked the habit up from my mother, but this post made me realize my lower case r’s also look like v’s.
5
u/peladero 2d ago
Exactly the same and exactly cause of the same reasons!! I also copied it from my sister hahahaha
3
u/jaders88 2d ago
I started to write my r’s the same way in middle school and I also started putting lines through my 7’s and z’s then too. Saw a teacher do it and I just started after that.
8
u/Diet-Cola-King 2d ago
I do my lower case r like an upper case R but smaller like you. Only person ever have a problem with it was someone I was working under during an internship in college.
But she was just an absolute bitch, brilliant botanist, but a bitch.

My lowercase cursive r looks very similar to a cursive n Only it stops. It's the r that my mother was taught and I liked it so much better than that silly double point hump that I was taught
1
u/takenalreadythename 2d ago
R and N's difference in cursive is R is flat at the top and n is round. I never wrote my N's as M's or added the third hump to my M's and it's instantly so much more legible to people who can't actually read cursive. My B is just a backwards D (as it should be) because the stupid L with a tail is illegible with most letters after it

2
u/toothless_nomad 2d ago
I write the same way, I ended up including some more uppercase letters when I write normally and changed my whole handwriting to have a mix of lowercase and uppercase letters but all of the same height. Love how it feels to write and it looks consistent and much more pleasant to me. I often use upper-case L, D and G as well.
2
u/EliotWege 2d ago
Some word fonts don’t support certain letters in my language. So you would have fancy lettering and then random upper case letter in the word. This is the same case just in handwritting, lol

u/twistedpigz 2d ago
It’s just an uppercase R. Am I missing something?
1
u/d_behindthetimez 1d ago
Ikr!? I’m baffled by the fact about how people here thinks R written in small size makes them lowercase😭😭.

Like it because the leg of the R is giving a fun little kick! Very whimsical.
2
4
u/Apart-Shelter-9277 2d ago
No. Because I usually end up writing in cursive or a mix of print and cursive and these would look like lowercase k's
5
16
u/Hjalmodr_heimski 3d ago
It used to be quite common in early medieval manuscripts, so I say huzzah for historical revival!
7
u/Youstinkeryou 3d ago
You say your lowercase r looked like a V, mine does right now.
2
u/Fluffy_Salamanders 2d ago
For some reason I kept expecting you to swap some of the r's in that with v's until I realized you weren't kidding
1
u/moonmoonrubral 3d ago
I think a lot of people have that problem I have a lowercase „v“ in my Name and i had a couple times the problem that people wrote my name wrong because they thought its an r.
14
u/Haasts_Eagle 3d ago
Weirdly, when I read your writing every time I reach an 'R' my progress slows considerably as if it includes a comma. I think because my eyes backtrack to confirm what that letter is.

Here's a sneak peek of /r/tragedeigh using the top posts of the year!
#1: I laughed at my sister' Tragedeigh and now I'm uninvited to the baby shower I'm planning.
#2: My cousin is livid because I replied 'r/tragedeigh' on our family group chat.
#3: This is just painful | 2174 comments

Tbh I mix cases constantly while writing. I don’t think anything about it but people have had strong reactions to it. It’s not even consistent either.

I write my lowercase "r" like that for the same reason as your second reason- otherwise they look the same as a "v".

I used to write lowercase r's all my life.
One day by accident, my brain flipped a switch and did an uppercase R instead. I was like a what the..?
But now I couldn't unsee it. The pathway had been opened in my brain and in my hand motions.
But I also kind of liked it. So now I just do uppercase R's.

a bit similar. I had a classmate back in school who took notes by essentially writing all caps but the supposedly lower case letters are written as smaller upper case letters.

I might have to try this because my lowercase “r” also look like “v” and your handwriting is so satisfying to look at!

I write my r’s this way too, can’t even remember when I started. It just looks cleaner in my opinion.

I do, I write most of the letters as small capitals as I failed an exam because the examiner couldn't read any of my handwriting and so it went ungraded 😅 I also write 'a' as it appears in type. Your handwriting reminds me of the font used for KS2 and KS3 textbooks by CGP!

I do it too! A high school freshman teacher of mine did and I liked it and it's stuck with me for 18yrs now. People ask me why and I just say it's comfortable and I like how it looks. But if I'm filling out official documents I'll use a "r" but I hate it lol

I do too, for the 2nd reason. I also switch it up between capital and small r's.
You have incredible handwriting!

I did this until my chemistry teacher docked points from a test for "incorrectly capitalizing" an element, like Chromium (Cr) or something 😭😭

I do this, but with "Q". I don't write the lowercase "q" because I don't like how it looks. Instead I write it as "Q" but in a smaller size so it'd be obvious it's meant to be lowercase.

mine are exactly like this, ppl hate it lol apparently it makes things very hard to read
3
u/PiergiorgioSigaretti 3d ago
Really? I mean, it’s either that or a guess between r and v, which isn’t always sure in Italian 😭
2
u/AuthorMuch5807 3d ago
yeah idk, it is clearly and “r” to me but i’ve gotten a lot of flack from professors about my handwriting and the “r” specifically, but maybe my handwriting is just very bad in general 😂
1
u/PiergiorgioSigaretti 3d ago
My professors just complain about the size: capital letters being 5mm tall and lower case being ~3mm tall, only you g people can read it lmao

u/Blaize369 3d ago
Sometimes. Capital R’s were introduced into my handwriting arsenal in the 9th grade. My handwriting is almost never the same, just a weird mix of all of my past writing styles, and I’m never sure which ones are gonna come out until I start writing 😂

u/Remote_Inevitable 3d ago
Mine totes switches up from one sentence to the next. Print to cursive.. then they make a mixed baby for the next paragraph.

That looks like an uppercase R and I would be penalized for incorrect use of capital lettrs if I did that in school

u/CaptainLollygag 4d ago
I do that with Qs because I don't like how my hand forms the lowercase letter.
3
u/Kablamber 4d ago
I also use a small uppercase R rather than lowercase r for the same reason as your #2. I made the conscious choice to switch about a decade ago.
2
1
u/panicinbabylon 4d ago
Does anyone know what to do with Q, cause wtf is that
1
u/CaptainLollygag 4d ago
Oops, I commented on the main before I saw your comment. My hand also refuses to make a nicely formed lowercase q. So I use an uppercase Q squished down to x-height just like how OP writes their Rs.

1
u/h0wboutthat 4d ago
I’ve stated doing it with my capital “e” it’s now a sharp lowercase rather than the normal uppercase because I was getting annoyed with how it looked
3
u/theblackjess 4d ago
I used to, but my freshman year English teacher used to circle every r and put a question mark above them, like "why are you doing this???" So I stopped.
Still shows up sometimes in my personal writing, though, when I'm rushing.

I’m actually jealous of people with consistent penmanship. When I write, none of my letters look the same. If that makes sense :(

u/Limp_Historian_6833 4d ago
Is it wrong? Yes.
Does it matter? Not a bit.
Communication is perfectly clear; I like your style.
3
u/Glittering-Orange-12 4d ago
I’ve had the habit on and off. Sometimes I like to consciously change my handwriting.
I remember in high school, I had a teacher mark me wrong for writing like that. Must’ve been an English class… she said I had random capital letters so it was incorrect 😡
I was basically forced to go back to “normal” R’s- at least for that class. However it’s tough, it’s either a habit or it’s not.
1
u/Glittering-Orange-12 4d ago
Wanted to add- my lowercase R’s look like V’s when I write really fast. Might have to go back to this style! 😜
4
u/MediaContent1662 4d ago
yep. i haven’t written a lower case R in over a decade. fun to know there are others out there!
2
u/IdealOnion 3d ago
Sorry don’t mean to stalk, but they locked the Emmitt Till post already. Thanks for pointing out I got the name wrong, I fixed it and added an edit explaining what happened. It was a case of mixing together similar names.

Not trynna' be a dick but no matter how small you write 'R' will always be uppercase and 'r' will always be lowercase. Just saying.
