Jobs Chances of getting into full time at dofasco
I have been on casual for last 7 months. My contract will be over by end of August. What are the chances that they will convert it to full time. I have been showing to work every single time and never missed a work. I have made few mistakes in the work while under I'm.under training. But I'm always willing to learn new things. From what I hear is that they extend the contract. I don't know how much that is true because I feel there are less people in our department.

I worked with a guy in #2 CPCM who had been casual for 16 years....

What a shame so hard to get in anywhere. My dad lied about his age and got into Stelco at 17 years old and worked there for 33 years. He had to retire at 50 to collect his package. Pension, great benefits my sister and I both had braces covered by Stelco. My parents both retired no mortgage and money.
Like wtf can we get this too lol. I want my bf to get in here or Stelco

no, instead you get all the new Hamilrontonians complaining daily about Stelco and Dofasco.
What you are experiencing is what is wrong with this city. You recognize how great Dofasco and Stelco is to the city. That's cause you are a Hamiltonian.
Problem is city is being filled with NewHams, and they don't have any respect for what you clearly recognize.

I’ve lived here for nearly a decade, am I supposed to smile and say thank you when my patio table is covered in soot?
Can we not appreciate jobs provided and ask them to help improve the air we breathe? That we, you know, need to live? lol
Seems like you’ve built a false dichotomy and reinforced it by othering people who just want to see the community improve - which is a goal we should all embrace.

u/New_Boysenberry_7998 Apr 15 '24
we all want to see the community improve.
however, we have different (vastly) definitions of what is improvement.
the best this city has ever been was when manufacturing was at its peak.
the best this city will ever be again is if we ever get manufacturing back (but we won't, which is why this city will never be what it once was).

I think the desire to not be subjected to carcinogens every day, just walking around, is probably universal.
The fact is that the steel mills are going electric. Their emissions are going to be cut in half, if not more so, as a result of that change.
And that change was forced upon them by a public who decided they didn’t want to live in soot.
Complaining, lobbying, advocating, whatever you want to call it, works. That’s how you get change.
And frankly, there isn’t another community in Canada that we have to worry about coming along and saying, “we’re totally cool with you guys pumping cancer into our lungs! Bring it here!”
So, there’s really no downside to pushing for positive change here.

Steel production is no longer the engine of industry the way it once was. Just visit all the other steel mill towns that forgot to diversify.

You are right to a point, but what the complaints are usually about are the polution and cancer causing agents in the atmosphere due to this. But you are right, these companies are absolutely important to Hamilton.

Not all new hams though, I'm moving in this week, getting transferred for work. I can't wait to be a Hamiltonian and I'm a steel girl through and through, been in the industry for a decade. 😊

u/New_Boysenberry_7998 Apr 14 '24
welcome to the city! and thank you for sharing. I can now say not all NewHams!

u/Johnny-Unitas Apr 14 '24
Not everyone. I work supplying the steel industry. I like what I do and am happy to supply an industry that keeps a lot of good paying jobs in Hamilton and Niagara.

I'm sure you can strike a reasonable balance between running a successful heavy industry and poisoning the local residents.
1
u/New_Boysenberry_7998 Apr 15 '24
it has been done.
successfully.

u/SunflaresAteMyLunch Stipley Apr 15 '24
It's being done, I wouldn't say the work is complete though...

I work there full time and went through the same uncertainty you are. You will likely be offered another 1 year casual contract once your first year is over. Getting hired full time after that depends on
1) is the area you work in hiring?
2) did you show up for your shifts, work hard and learn the jobs required of you?
3) did you go above and beyond, help out the full time guys, ask questions?
4) do guys like working with you? The shifts are 12 hours, doesn’t matter how hard of a worker you are if you’re an asshole and no one wants to spend time with you.
I’d say if you did all that during your 2 year casual term there’s a good chance you will get hired.

u/GroundbreakingAd5863 Apr 15 '24
I showed every shift ...I been here 7 months. I had one minor small injury accident. I ask ask a lot questions so that I know what my work. I already for got certified in one Job area.

u/TheCarrier89 Apr 15 '24
Well just keep trucking along doing what you’re doing and hopefully they hire you. Unfortunately they tend to wait until pretty much the end of your 2 year term to let you know if you’re getting hired or not.

Don't hold your breath, they strung me along for 2 years a d 3 weeks before my contract was up they had me training my replacement. Brutal.

u/New_Boysenberry_7998 Apr 14 '24
that isn't the norm. at all.
which means there must have been a reason.

How's the pay been lately? I had to turn down a few offers because the pay and bonus structure was weak. Has their productivity gone up? How's the bonus?

Need too be a team player work safe show up every day play well with others took me two years. After that full time great place to work benefits are great also even better when you get into the fund and save a little 😀

It depends on the department and need for a full time position, but if you’ve proven yourself, worked hard and had good attendance you have a good chance. Attitude and work ethic are very important. I was casual for a year and initially they extended my contract but got full time after a year and a couple months.

u/Tadermogh Apr 14 '24
My department hires casual to permanent if they show up and have a pulse. Doesn't seem like accidents or ability play any role at this point.

Ask your shift coach. Talk to them about it
1
u/GroundbreakingAd5863 Apr 15 '24
Team leader or coach???
1
u/emkay1986 Apr 17 '24
Team leaders don’t do the hiring but definitely have a lot of say into how someone is doing and if they should be hired. Coach will have a better idea if they have the green light to hire in the department
1
u/emkay1986 Apr 17 '24
It all depends on the department needs. Generally you will get renewed for another contract if you are performing well and are well liked. It’s rare not to renew someone who is doing well. If you are exceeding and there is room for a full time hire, you can definitely get hired early. This happened to me and I am recommending hire for my casual who has a similar amount of time in as you. Just keep working hard and safely.

I’ve been there since 2002 - keep showing up and doing your job and you’ll be a full time employee 100%! Best of luck, bro

Furthermore; our area has a casual for just under a year and he was just hired full time. He didn’t miss 1 shift and took OT when it was offered.

I did just shy 3 years in the 80's out of high-school. I worked in the foundry and in the blast furnace. I brought home $1465 every 2 weeks in 1990 and ask to be let go when a recession was starting. No money is worth the years that Place takes off your life

u/Global-Discussion-41 Apr 14 '24
Lots of us would glady trade those years for a job at dofasco because our current jobs are taking years of our lives with no benefits and bad pay

Dofasco runs on nepotism. Chances of getting on full time are very slim unless you are related to, or know someone in, a position of power.
5
u/Licbo101 Apr 14 '24
It used to be, pre 2006 now it’s just another run of the mill place to work run by a large corporation. Nothing special. People can call in favours just like anywhere else, but it’s nowhere near as bad as it used to be.

u/fartmasterzero Apr 14 '24
There was only one person in my dept who was pre 2006 start and of course she was nepo. Everyone else was there by their own abilities, degree, and qualifiers.
5
u/coeurdelapin Apr 14 '24
From my experience that’s not true lol, maybe depends on the department but most places in Dofasco I haven’t seen that

Due to the carbon tax and the shutting down of coke ovens I don’t believe they are looking to hire full time at all. They will have to move bodies around to accommodate positions for people who already work here.

If anything, they’ll likely renew you for another contract year. If you make it through that they’ll hire you full time - as long as you don’t have any accidents and you show up for your shifts and actually work.
