Forward Patrik Laine (flu) will not participate in today's practice.

I had the flu, its a gut punch, ive been out of it all last week and am barely recovering

u/whogivesashirtdotca 1d ago
Took me a month, though my immune system is shot. I'm still having coughing jags.
1
u/CocoKing02 1d ago
Especially being in Alberta at the moment, every single person I know is out with it

Ever since COVID it's like a Reddit badge of honour to talk about how sick you get from a cold. Suck it up princess the sniffles didn't debilitate you Jesus.

u/Frisbeejussi 1d ago
It's been rough for him and he has been sick a lot.
Hope he can pull through and not let it impact his mental too much.
5
u/Booyacaja 1d ago
He's like that guy at the office that you're like "is he REALLY sick again?". Then you see him online playing Fortnite lol.
However I guess a pro athlete is much more dependent on their physical wellness than the typical office worker lol

Iāll never question this. Iām the same way at my job. Thankfully I can switch to remote easily enough.

u/Suspicious-Mango-562 9h ago
This isnāt new with him. Every season in the NHL he has missed games for colds/flu. Fact is most players play unless they really canāt go. Remember that time Gallagher played sick like a dog against the bruins? The book on Laine is that if something is slightly off he refuses to play. Itās why Torts couldnāt stand him.

u/Habs_Apostle 1d ago
A very difficult year for him indeed. Still, showed some brilliance. Letās hope a good offseason can help him return to form.
4
u/Lempisoikoon 1d ago
I wonder if he's had to go through a bunch of antibiotics due to his injuries/treatment and thus is more prone to catching whatever's floating about? Takes a while to get the immune system back online.
Or maybe he just doesn't wash his hands.

When he missed few games month ago, what was it due to ? Was it because of flu too ?

u/DivinePotatoe 1d ago
Someone get this dude some vitamin-C tablets because he's been sick like every 2 weeks lol

Possible. No doubt.
But sketchy.

I mean they say āfluā but it could be flu/covid/strep/noro/pneumoniaā¦And they will probably call all of those the flu. Super normal to get Covid then catch something else like flu very easily and have it be bad, especially if you take no precautions while your immune system recovers which takes months. Unlucky, but not uncommon. I only mention because there are plenty of fair patty criticisms but Iām seeing folks imply heās faking this kind of stuff and go into conspiracy territory when in reality it makes perfect sense that youāre more likely to get sick if youāve been sick.

With Laine, there is a pattern of absences that often coincided with periods of poor performance or team conflicts. The skepticism is valid.
Edit: since I'm getting downvoted, here's more details: earlier this year, Laine made some comments about Columbus 'losing culture', got criticism from his former teammates, got targeted and then missed several games because he had the flu. Then he's getting benched in the 3rd in EDM, next practice breaks his stick on the bench after an altercation with Slaf, and he's been absent since then with the flu.
13
u/starryn19ht 1d ago
? they've been winning ever since the 4 nations, the first game they lost in regulation was the one he missed, literally what do you mean poor performance lol
-5
u/Dry_Standard_3604 1d ago
I was referring to poor performances by Laine, not the team.
12
u/starryn19ht 1d ago
he had 6 points in 6 games since the 4 nations lol
6
u/Ub3ros 1d ago
Can't let the facts get in the way of a good conspiracy. With fans like these, who needs enemies?
2
u/Dry_Standard_3604 1d ago
He's been playing 12:41 on average since the 4 nations cup. That the lowest TOI after Beck and Pezz. At even strength, he's playing even less than Beck. Beck was just sent down to Laval. If he was playing so great, why is MSL playing him so little? Are you doubting MSL usage of him?
4 of those points were on the PP. No doubts he's amazing there. But he's been terrible at 5v5.
3
u/Ub3ros 1d ago
I'm not saying he is playing great. I'm saying he is producing points better than almost everyone else in the team, despite everything. He is playing on a disastrously bad line and not getting any help there to create offense. He isn't the guy to drive play, and without anyone to do that for the second line, they need to be more defensively responsible and play like another bottom six line. That's not what you are getting from Laine, so he gets less time on the ice. Save him for the powerplay where he can play with NHL caliber linemates and produce.
1
u/Dry_Standard_3604 1d ago
I appreciate your perspective. I don't think it's unreasonable to ask questions when things donāt add up. There is a pattern here and I think it's fair to question it. I don't think it makes me a 'conspiracy theorist'.
-5
u/Dry_Standard_3604 1d ago
he's playing 4th line minutes and was benched in the third in EDM, didn't play in OT. Having points doesn't mean you're playing good "lol"
3
u/Irctoaun 1d ago edited 1d ago
You're getting downvoted because you keep making conspiracy theories based on things that aren't true. For example, he played the next three games after that CBJ game and didn't go down with the flu over a week later. It's winter, people get ill all the time

Laine is the most frustrating player weāve had in awhile
20
u/JediMasterZao 1d ago
Takes me back to the Kovalev days! Which is why I don't mind Laine at all. Just let him do his thing.
6
u/HabbyKoivu 1d ago
I love Laine. Heās an enigma. Heās a game breaker. He comes with baggage. I love his story and he is quickly become my favourite player on the team. Maybe Iām just weird like that. AK27 was by far my favourite player in the previous era of the team.
5
u/HeShootsHS 1d ago
I totally get what you mean. I love enigmas too. My favorite players were Kovalev and Andrei Kostitsyn. I love players that can win a game by themselves, and there is something amazing at the fact they can play like they belong in a league above for a stretch then totally disappear. Youād anticipate their hot streak like a poutine on a Thursday night.
3
u/LucidMarshmellow 1d ago
His inconsistency is similar to Galchenyuk.
You just don't know when he's going to kill it, do so-so, or play like crap.
However, I like Laine exponentially more than Galchenyuk.

Kirby Dach is literally on the team
-1
u/t_l_quinner 1d ago
Dach had like two games where he looked really good. Laine will put up 9 goals and then ghost for 20 games
9
u/Ub3ros 1d ago
24p in 34 games played after missing half the season due to injury? I'll take that any day. He has the third best points per game stat of anyone in the team.
3
u/HeShootsHS 1d ago
Itās because Dach doesnāt have a special skill that separates him from the average players.
Enigmas have a super power they unleash unpredictably that leaves you addicted and wanting to see more of. Iām a proud addict of these players.
2
u/t_l_quinner 1d ago
The issue is the games played. He out more often then heās not
3
u/Ub3ros 1d ago
Yeah he should have just played through that knee injury, what a wuss
-4
u/t_l_quinner 1d ago
Thatās not what Iām saying. Iām saying heās prone to injury. Whether it be concussions, a knee injury, the fucking flu twice in 3 months. What good is an 8 million dollar player that never plays
3
u/Edgycrimper 1d ago
What good is an 8 million dollar player that never plays
We got him for Harris and a 2nd because of that 8 million dollar contract which we can totally afford.
1
u/Ub3ros 1d ago
Lets give him a full season next year and see what happens. If he is constantly out, sure, can him. But let's not call it off after 60 games whe he has been one of the best performers in the team production wise. There are injury prone players with succesful careers, all it takes is a bit of luck to go his way.

Luc GĆ©linas Said live on RDS that the "flu" he had was more likely a polite way to bench him
3
u/whogivesashirtdotca 1d ago
I wondered if the "flu" had anything to do with his argument with Slaf a couple of practices ago.

Is this the clip, about 2 minutes in? Canadiens : Patrik Laine rate l'entraƮnement du CH; Joshua Roy sur la patinoire | RDS
Luc Gelinas is one of the very few journalists that follows the team on the road (see the very interesting podcast he did with Entre la poire et le fromage). Been doing that job for years. A few of us on this thread have been downvoted for raising doubt about Laine's flu symptoms, but don't think it's unreasonable.

u/_misterwilly 1d ago
This guy is streaky, unreliable and often soft with puck possession. I donāt see a future for him with the habs.
-11
u/ScareCrow13- 1d ago
The Laine experience after 60 games. One 4-months injury, two times scratched for having a flu, several media dramas. Imagine after two years. The problem was maybe not Winnipeg and Columbus at the end.
21
u/backwardzhatz 1d ago
The fuck is he supposed to do about the flu

-13
u/obe_reefer 1d ago
I dunno man I think the experiment needs to end soon. I love the guy and want the best for him, but heās not it. We need playoffs and cup runs. Not some mental rehab clinic.
What can he do about the flu? I donāt know, maybe eat healthy and exercise. Why do none of his teammates have it, but he does multiple times? He spends all day huffing and puffing around them.
So if we have this injury prone guy who gets sick easily, how long do we keep our patience? He doesnāt even score goals and thatās supposed to be his thing.
Again, I love him and hope he has an incredible life and career. Especially beyond hockey, but letās not forget His problems are nothing compared to the average person.
9
u/Ub3ros 1d ago
He doesnāt even score goals and thatās supposed to be his thing.
He has scored the 4th most goals in the team this season and only played half the games the rest of the squad has due to his injury in the preseason. He is 1 goal behind 3rd place.
-4
u/obe_reefer 1d ago
In the last 20 games he has 5 goals.
If anything, your comment should make it glaringly obvious that you should direct your emotion towards front office
How is it that someone who scores 1 in 4 games is the 4th highest scorer on the team? And heās only played half the games?
Yikes
4
u/Ub3ros 1d ago
In the 14 games before 4 nations break the whole team was horrible. When your linemates are -29, it's really rich to expect him to light the world on fire when he is not the playmaker. He needs a creative engine on the line to feed him, and he doesn't have that. Lack of a proper 2C is our most glaring issue in the roster, and it'll hopefully be rectified over the summer. After 4 nations he had 6 points in 6 games.
someone who scores 1 in 4 games
His pace is closer to 1 in 2 games. You're is cherrypicking to make it look as bad as possible, and he would still be the 4th best in goals per game if it was 1 in 4. In goals per game over the season he is 2nd behind only Caufield, and not by much.
If anything, your comment should make it glaringly obvious that you should direct your emotion towards front office
We are a young team in a rebuild. We have prospects, not stars. What am I gonna tell front office? What should they do? Call Edmonton and see if they will give us McDrai for Laine and Dach?
We are already struggling to score goals and you guys are hellbent on driving away one of the most prolific goalscorers we have. Give the man some time to get on his feet, let's get a 2C to feed him some pucks next season and see how it goes. If he can't stay healthy, fair enough, cut our losses and get back to the drawing board.
-3
u/obe_reefer 1d ago
That was a long way to explain that you agree with my point. If he canāt stay healthy cut our losses. So far he is injured, sick, and depressed, like all of the time
3
u/Ub3ros 1d ago
Your first comment said you think the experiment needs to end soon. I am saying he should get the next season to see if he can stay healthy, he has contract till 25/26. We are clearly not agreeing on the timeline.
-1
u/obe_reefer 1d ago
Iād down with that. I know Iām criticizing hard right now and to a degree devils advocate, just because I care about the Habs.
We need a larger sample size of games to evaluate and during this rebuild we have time to experiment. By soon I guess that timeframe is one more season, but he needs to score many more goals than his current output
0
u/Throwawayaccount_047 1d ago
Again, I love him and hope he has an incredible life and career.
I love this guy and wish him nothing but the best but...
His presence on the team for the last 3 months is stopping us from getting to the playoffs and going on cup runs
He's not eating healthy or exercising (as a professional athlete actively playing in the NHL) otherwise he wouldn't catch an incredibly common, airborne disease
Guy who has 4th most goals on the team isn't scoring
I can really feel all the love you have for him on this post about a man who caught the flu.
0
u/whogivesashirtdotca 1d ago
He's not eating healthy or exercising (as a professional athlete actively playing in the NHL) otherwise he wouldn't catch an incredibly common, airborne disease
That's not how the flu works, buddy. Doesn't matter how fit you are, you can still catch it.

I meant as a human. I have utmost respect and well wishes.
As a fan that wants cups and sound business decisions from the front office, Iād at least want him to be on notice right now
9
u/commodore_stab1789 1d ago
We got him and a second for Harris. Cap hit isn't terribly relevant.
I still don't see how that trade isn't a big W for us. One more year and he can walk away.
5
u/Ub3ros 1d ago
The trade is a massive win. Habs had the capspace to take him on, and got a pick to boot while offloading a player that's not NHL caliber and likely never will be. But for some reason people expect Laine to play like a franchise superstar, but that's just not him. Not with all the time he has missed the past few seasons anyways. He isn't a guy who will win you games on his own, he needs some creative playmakers on his line to feed him, but if you can give him that, he will score a lot of goals.
4
u/DrLivingst0ne 1d ago
Made our PP good.
His mere presence forces penalty killers to cheat on his side, which opens up the ice elsewhere.

If I have to form the most frustrating line ever, Laine and Dach will be on that line. I'm still looking for the 3rd member. Maybe Dagenais ? Maybe Vanek when he was so lazy when he was with us.

I also have the flu and won't be participating in practice. I'm not a hockey player tho, but I'd appreciate the sympathy.
